I always started with cyndaquil. I dunno why but it felt strange if I chose totodile or chikorita. D:

i personally liked cydaquil better and my sister perfered chickorita so if you ask me i would say to choose either one it dosen't really matter. you can find fire or grass types later in the game.

You should have made totodle an option
Becuase if it were up to me i would pick totodile i always start out with the water type as my beginner pokemon.

When I was 7, I had two Chikoritas and a Cyndaquil. I named the Cyndaquil and one of the Chikoritas Chiquita and I named the other CBM (after the evos) Real original huh?

I used to name my Chikorita Chiquita as well, Suisse! blaugh I always thought it was an adorable name even if it wasn't very original. I was never good at picking names for my Cyndaquil though I did name the first female Totodile I ever had Lulu. xD

i was playing pokemon crsytal for fun the other day my old game was saved with a cyndiquil and i decided to start a new game with a chikorita and it was a little harder at the gyms... heart razz cheese_whine

In my opinion it all comes down to whether or not you wanna give yourself a harder time at the beginning of the game,I actually choose Chikorita my very first time I played Gold and I actually enjoyed it more just because of the harder time I had compared to picking cyndaquil
