17. Blood
She remembered his blood on her hands.
Blood for blood, he would pay.
The color of her hair, the color of her destiny.

18. Rainbow
These were darks days indeed. No sun shone, and rain weighed heavy on her back.

19. Gray
A little gray house on a little gray hill... A little gray road to a little gray mill...
Why did she suddenly find herself reciting children's poetry? It must be insanity kicking in. Did it ever stop raining in this godforsaken cliff country?
A little gray fence in a little gray yard... But no one lives here anymore.

20. Fortitude
There's a glimpse of sunshine up ahead. And it's not faith that steels her will, or hope. She does it because she must, that is all.

21. Vacation
It was a pleasant place, this temple. Her mother had been initiated in this very place.
She could almost enjoy the feel of the sun on her skin, the whisper of wind through the tress, the gurgle of the bordering stream.
After months of travel, camping along the trail, even the simplest accommodations would seem lavish, but the sisters of Kilvar'ro enjoyed a great many luxuries.
She could almost enjoy herself, here, but she couldn't allow herself to. She could not allow herself to think of a happy future here, with her child, and Yilan - for surely he was tracking her.
There were things that she must do - promises unfulfilled, and debts unpaid.

22. Mother Nature
She smelled smoke on the wind. Night came, and the darkening sky was lit by an orange glow in the west. Humans, burning down the forest again. It would grow back again within the week. The land always restored itself most quickly near the temples of the vardri.

23. Cat
In all her stay, she always looked away from the caiot vardri's eye. She looked too much like Takashi, dark cat's ears framed by hair a shade lighter. "You can continue your journey for a while yet, Kaida. Your pregnancy shouldn't cause you any troubly for some time, if you are careful," the caiot physician said with a resigned sigh. It was the only time their eyes had met, and Kaida found herself thinking, Her eyes are gold... not blue-green.

24. No Time
She left the next day.
It always seemed like time was catching up on her, and she was running out.

25. Trouble Lurking
Sometimes she feels as if there are eyes on her back. She doesn't know whose, but she knows they're there. She's certain they aren't Yilan's.

She thinks there are no tears left in her, but when she glimpses the sheltered valley below, she finds her cheeks damp.

27. Foreign
In a backwater village, she realizes that she must look very strange to these people who have never seen one of the vardri before.

28. Sorrow
There is no time for sorrow, no room for regret.
But that doesn't keep her heart from aching when she sees a happy family, playing by the river.

29. Happiness
Is happiness avenging one's mother? Is happiness achieving one's goal? Is happiness killing your father? Or is it something as simple as a smile? Or something as great as love?
She doesn't know. Maybe she never will.

30. Under the Rain
It's raining again, and she can't help but remember another rainy day.
Yilan gathered them close, spreading his wings to shield them from the rain. She could feel his warmth at her back, and Takashi's shoulders warm beneath her palms.
It wasn't just the protection from the rain she missed - after all, she could call on her scales to manifest and protect her bared skin from the wet.
