She purred as she pondered, eyeing every detail. “Perhaps they’re there, for the sake of being there?” She rose, stepping closer. She neared the wall and stepped onto some soot, old dusty pieces of ash crumbled beneath her paw. “I mean….I’d love to to have something representing me, to be immortalized for the many seasons to come…Even when I pass on..” She grinned, looking up. Then…she had and idea! She ran to the edge of the caves where the bats were, remembering a few tiny impressions in the cage that had collected bits of water. After wetting her paw, she trotted back (on three paws!) and dipped her wet paw in the ashes. When the black, wet paste had formed, she stood up on her hind legs and placed her paw on the rocky wall, pulling it away with smudging. She stood back by Montgomery and eyed her new masterpiece; a perfect black paw print. Then, after giving him an affectionate lick on the face, she purred “Now your turn!”

Montgomery tilted his head a to the side slightly as he pondered Kiarra's observation. "You just might be right there, maybe someone made them just because they thought it would be neat to have pawprints there?"
He watched her run off, then come back and make her own mark below the others, purring happily, very impressed with her ingenuity. "That's a wonderful idea, Kiarra!" He murred happily and nuzzled her cheek, then ran off towards the entrance, coming back like her on three paws. He carefully pressed his paw into the ashes where she had, making sure to rub it around a little and coat it well, then he raised up on his back legs and pressed his paw right next to her print, leaving a matching black pawprint beside hers.
He hopped down and wiped his paw on the floor a few times to rid it of the sticky black paste, stepping back next to her to admire their addition to the wall, and taking the opportunity to snuggle up to her side. "Well now, I think that makes quite a nice mark." He purred happily.

At that very moment, at that exact time, her life was perfect. Now, she would have a way to capture the one ‘perfect’ moment her life had ever allowed her to savor This moment was nothing but a blink in time, could be gone within a second…yet, she promised herself she would always remember it.. If she squinted her eyes a little, both prints seemed to form a heart. She purred loudly, running her body along his chest as she continued past him, curious as to what else might be lying around the bend. The darkness hid her pelt perfectly, allowing her to slip through the massive cavern as she explored further. The rumbles in her throat sent vibrations against the rocks, tickling her senses. She fumbled her whiskers in annoyance, backing up clumsily. As her paws moved back, her back foot got wedged between two stones. She automatically pulled forward, kicking the air as she tried to break free from the stones grasp only to yelp in pain; she had badly scraped the skin on her ankle.

"Kiarra?" Montgomery yelped, scrambling to his paws and darting forward around the corner of the cavern where she had vanished from sight. Without light his eyes were quite a bit less useful than normal, but his other senses were just fine, and even through the confused echos he could pick out the sound of her breathing. He quickly but carefully padded towards her, tripping only once on the loose stones of the floor. "Are you ok?" He sniffed her closely, nuzzling her shoulder. "I smell blood, are you hurt?" He nuzzled her again, anxiously. He really liked this female, and the thought that she might be injured from something he suggested did not sit well with him.

A Deafening pain shot through her, she winced and tried her best to convince him, “I’m alright….just a scratch I’m sure….But I seem to be stuck…” She jiggled her leg once more, loudly gasping in pain once more, her ankle was tightly jammed. She was comforted by his presence, somewhat relieved to tell you the truth…But it didn’t help the matter, She was still stuck. “What am I going to do Monty!” The words spilled, “What if I never get out! What if something finds me here…trapped like a fly in a web!” Panic was begin to set in.

He purred reassuringly, nuzzling her neck. "It's going to be ok, Kiarra, the rocks on the floor here are all really pretty small, so you can't be stuck that badly. It's probably just a matter of not having enough leverage to move it." He shifted so that his side pressed against hers, using his sense of touch to figure out exactly where her body was so that he could feel for the problem. "Just hold still and try not to move it in case something is broken." He kept purring quietly, attempting to calm her down. "I'm not going to leave you here, Kiarra, you're too special for that." He licked her side, then bent his head down to nose around at the rocks and try to find the one pinning her leg.

She leaned against Montgomery and began to pull; As the stones began to give way, she was able to loosen her paw enough to finally free it from the cave’s grip. She stumbled forward, her front paws cushioning her fall as she failed to regain her step, her ankle was in paralyzing pain. She stood, her body in a tense pose, the muscles straining to ‘relax’. “Is it bad?” She asked trying to look back but not daring to move, The sight of Montgomery made her pause; “Can you see?” She continued, impatiently waiting.

Montgomery dropped to his stomach beside her, licking at her injured paw tenderly. "It's not bad, Kiarra. You are only bleeding a little bit, and it doesn't feel broken anywhere. I think you just twisted it a little, but I can't see much of anything in this light." He snuggled against her side, trying to be as comforting as he could. "I'll bet it will be fine in a few days, and it won't hurt nearly as much if we get it to some cool water to soak."

The cold water made her mouth seem all the drier; the dusty air from all the commotion never helped her lungs either. “Yes….I’m quite sure the water would help..” She agreed, looking back as her leg pulsed once more. She rose, straining her body against his as she moved forward, towards the amberish light from the days setting sun. Where would she be without…well, you know who. Her slow pace was gnawing on her own nerves, making her push herself forward faster, but only biting her tongue at the pain. A low rumble rose from her throat, mostly in part for her own stupidity that resulted in such a situation. “I’m sorry Monty…” She whispered softly, nearing stepping from the entrance of the cave; the sky had been painted with oranges and pinks, the birds above sang their nights final good-byes.

Montgomery walked slowly beside her, offering a supporting shoulder to lean on, purring very quietly in her ear. "Take it easy now, you're going to make it worse if you hurry too much." He licked her neck. "We have all the time in the world. Wow, it's pretty out here tonight, just like a certain female B'alam I can think of," he chuckled softly. "And don't worry about it, Kiarra, if I had been the one walking in front, I would have probably ended up stepping in the same little trap you did. We'll get you some place you can rest, and you'll be right as rain soon."

His words made her heart melt, dulling the pain to a numbing sensation. Their march was slow and steady, pressing through side by side. How could she ever manage without him? “You know…” She began, sheepishly looking away as she continued “Not only are you the one I lean onto for physical support-“ her paw stumbled yet she quickly regained her footing by leaning against him, almost on cue, “But your who I lean onto emotionally and spiritually as well..I’m yet to ever form such a bond with another…” She said softly, reminiscing her days as a lonely cub. She was a proud b’alam, never taking things for granted and always helping those in need. She was unselfish and bright, yet those same traits served to mask how she felt inside. Beneath the brave face, she was a vulnerable and lonely cub It was terrifying to take the risk, to leave yourself open to the pain of heartbreak. She was unsure if she could ever take the chance, the final leap…But if there was ever a time she would, it would be for no other. The sounds of running water slowly began to near, she quickly closed the distance and hunched down slowly for a drink; the water reflected a broken red and orange sky. When she finished, she slowly walked into a shallow end and completely submerged her back ankle, “The waters freezing!” She exclaimed in a shocked laugh.

"Aww, Kiarra, that's so sweet!" Montgomery snuggled against her side, licking the back of her head while she soaked her paw. "I've grown very attached to you as well, you're so quick, smart and beautiful." He sort of stumbled over his words, pausing for a moment to try and unravel the tangle of thoughts in his head. "I'm sorry, I'm not handling this particularly well, but I just want to say that I am always very happy to be with you, and I always will be." He chuckled and dipped his paw in the water next to hers. "Wow, you're not kidding! At least that'll take any swelling right away."

She stared daintily into the water at her reflection, she could see Monty over her shoulder...It looked like a perfect dream. After a moment in silence, she said "You forgot something..." She turned and faced him; all fours in the water, "I'm unpredictable!" She cried as she sent a large splash in his direction with her two front paws. Her pent up frustrations has disappeared and now she stood there, soaked, under a sky that seemed to darken by the second. She slowly made her way to dry ground, giving her coat a quick shake and individually shaking away the excess moisture from each limb. Cooing softly, she sat down on her haunches and began to lick a paw, running her pink tongue along her silky, yet wet, fur. She paused for a moment, looking up in mid lick, "D'you really think I'm beautiful? and smart?" Her eyes were bright, brimming with hundreds of thoughts passing through them; her eyes were the window to her soul.

"Awk!" Montgomery squawked incoherently, trying to dodge back out of the way and losing his balance. He toppled into the stream with a splash, and just lay there in the water, laughing uproariously. "That I did forget, that I did." He slowly regained his footing on the slippery stream bed, sloshing back over to the bank and hopping ashore. He spent a moment shaking off most of the water, then sat down on the dry ground, facing Kiarra. His eyes met hers, and he smiled gently. "Of course I mean it, Kiarra. I've never met a more incredible female than you." His own eyes sparkled with something deeper, giving insight beyond his words.

Her paw lay motionless, still frozen in mid air "Mmm.." She agreed, closing her eyes as she finished washing her face. She was still very damp and somewhat cooled by the nights air; it made moving uncomfortable but, she couldn't help but near Monty's side. In silence, she ran her tongue along her body, side by side with him. When she had given up on her own coat, she directed her attention towards him. Lovingly, she began to tenderly help dry him, purring all the while. "You're one in a million.." She whispered softly into his triangular ear before leading her tongue down to his neck and chest. Her leg was still quite sore and tender, though Montgomery’s quick actions probably helped her ankle a great deal.
