I'm being stalked by a leaf.

It's the only explanation, as crazy as it sounds - at least, the only explanation I wanna accept. The only other one I can think of, is that someone's sneaking into my house at night and moving the leaf around.

Huh. Maybe Gerald? Wouldn't surprise me...it sounds like something he would do.

Anyway. I found the leaf the other day - it was just sitting on my kitchen table when I came in, one morning. Still can't figure out how it got there, since all of my windows were closed and I don't have any house plants. Not to mention that it was bright green.

It's kinda cold out, y'know? I thought these kind of plants were all dead.

So, yeah. I didn't throw it out, for some reason; just left it there. The next morning, it's in the bathroom. The morning after that, it's in my bedroom. It never does anything during the day - just at night. Maybe I should stay up and watch it, or set video cameras on it?

If it is moving itself, then I'll catch it; if it's someone else, well..I'll catch them.

Haven't managed to catch whoever keeps moving it in the act; I haven't managed to convince anyone to lend me a video camera yet. It's understandable, I guess...I do have a bad track record with electronics.

But seriously; blowing up a microwave is not comparable to using a camcorder.

Oh well. I could just throw it out (it's only a leaf, after all), but...I like it. It's strange - hasn't seemed like it's dieing yet, despite not being attached to anything, and it's green as ever.

I guess, I'm just curious.

Shouko surveyed the house before her. More leaves had finally arrived on the wind, all at once like when she had been born, and one had arrived here. She smiled and made her way up the front walk, eying the doorbell as she placed a flowerpot on the steps.

"I wonder what'll come of you," she told it, tucking a letter into the soil before making her exit.

The Letter
Dear Mr. Perry,

A little birdie told me you found one of our leaves recently. We're an organization called The Eden Project, and your leaf is a very special one. If you take good care of it, it will develop into a child. I've attached a flowerpot and special soil that will help it along its way. If you have any questions, give us a call or stop by our headquarters in Barton.

Good luck!

So.

It turns out the leaf is possessed, although I think it's supposed to be some kind of benevolent possession? Or that's the impression I got from the letter, anyway. At least planting the darned thing keeps it one place.

So. I'm gonna be a dad. Of a leaf-plant-kid-thing.

Who decided I'd make a good dad? I mean, the only thing I'm good at keeping alive is mold, and this kid had better not turn out to be some kinda mold. Mold is bad. Especially if its sentient.

The only experience I have with being a dad, is when Anabelle forced me to play house when we were little! And considering we were taking 'care' of her stuffed cat, I don't think that counts. It's a little hard to kill a stuffed cat, after all.

Well, unless you're Gerald, but he was trying to make Ana cry. And of course, would manage to pin the blame on me.

Sometimes I hate being the middle sibling. Everyone thinks you're the jealous one. Which I'm most certainly not. Nope, not at all...

But still! No parenting experience!

I need to talk to these people.

...Sputter, Sputter, Clang!

If it weren't for the fact that the house was freezing, Layne might have been in a good mood. He had the day off, he'd gotten out of a visit to his mother (he was 'sick', of course), and his birthday was in a few days.

But, as previously mentioned, the house was freezing. Quite literally.

If Layne had been awake that night, he would have heard the 'sputter-sputter-clang' sound that had led to this predicament. But as he was sound asleep, all he knew was that it was bloody cold; it wasn't until later that he realized the furnace had died.

Combine that with the low temperatures outside, and the snow that was accumulating, and it made from a very grumpy Layne. And a grumpy Layne considered things that he would normally never consider.

"At least at work I'd be warm..."

Such as going to work on his day off, for example.

But as cold as it was, it wasn't cold enough for him to actually go to work; for that to happen, he'd probably have to have frost bite first. He didn't exactly have the most brilliant work ethic in the world.

So now he was in the living room, curled up in a blanket, with a nice hot cup of coffee. Not that he was drinking much of it; it was for warmth more then anything else. He'd moved the potted leaf to a table in there as well, since he figured he didn't want it to get frostbite by the window.

Did leaves get frostbite?

Ah well, it wasn't really a concern now. With the fireplace going, it wouldn't be a problem.

Now if only the electrician would get there and fix his darned furnace, this might be a good day.

Brown splotches have begun to cover the normally healthy looking leaf. Strangely enough the leaf now seems to be digging itself very slowly further into it's pot so that the dirt around it matches the spots it's gaining and all the while it appears to be growing.

I think it's sick; it's getting brown spots all over it. I'd think it was dieing, but leaves usually become crispy when they die - it's not crispy. And, it's...growing? I don't know.

The brown spots make me think it's sick, but leaves don't start growing if they're sick, right? Of course, once they're off the branch, leaves aren't supposed to grow at all, so all the stuff I thought I knew about plants is pointless now. Not that I really knew all that much about them in the first place.

Maybe it's just...changing color as a part of growing? It may not look very healthy, but maybe it is.

I'll just have to hope that the growth is a sign it's doing alright, even if the splotches are worrying. It'd be a bad sign if I couldn't even keep a leaf healthy. Just to be on the safe side, I put it further away from the window, so it'll be warmer.

Less sunlight had down nothing and the leaf continues to turn brown and has dug itself almost completely into the soil surrounding it. However it's expanding size in such a confined space its causing problem and there as stress fractures appearing on the side of the pot.

Too healthy?

"This is a problem."

The pot looked like it was going to break open soon. and that would be a problem, because he didn't think taking care of this leaf meant letting it spill its dirt everywhere. Surely that wouldn't be good for it.

Layne wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to do - transfer it to another pot, maybe? The soil was supposed to be special, but perhaps the pot wasn't...of course, with a larger pot, he'd need more soil.

"Alright: options."

What options did he have?

Re-potting it was one, he supposed...although how he was supposed to remove it from that pot without breaking anything was beyond him, since it had grown into it all.

The second option...letting it break the pot? It'd make a bit of a mess, but then he could (perhaps?) move it to a bigger pot then.

And the third - hmm...now there was an idea that might work.

It was the simplest option, really; put the smaller pot into a bigger pot. That way, when it broke, it wouldn't make a mess, and (hopefully), the leaf would still be alright.

At least this proved it was healthy.

There wasn't time to place the small bot into a large one becuase with a loud Crack the pot shattered spraying shard of clay and dirt everywhere and leaving. A distinctly earthy smell permeating the air. Sitting where the pot had once been and completely unharmed was a very calm looking little girl.

If only there were fanfare...

When the pot exploded, Layne wasn't thinking of birth - he was thinking that he somehow must have made it explode, therefore killing it. So he had a few moments of panic, before he realized that - no, there weren't pot shards everywhere. But there was a little girl.

And she seemed quite content to simply watch him, as he stammered and gaped like some sort of giant, mammalian fish.

"...heeey there."

Not exactly the most brilliant introduction to the world, but really - how did one greet a leaf-turned child? Fanfare was out, since he didn't have any trumpets on hand. Not that he could have played one well enough to make it good fanfare.

The little girl simply continued to watch him, and gave a slow blink.

This should be interesting...
