Mechanical Bird

Harper grinned, "They are sooo cuuuute!" He said, far too girly, precisely at the same time Manny said they were ugly. He turned to her and promptly stuck his tongue out, before pointing at the bird who had looked at her. "It likes you!" He declared, sprinting over to it.

Reaching a cautious hand out he went to poke the creature's long scaly legs. "Hey Manny, they look big enough to ride..."

"Careful," she nearly shrieked as he started to poke them, "They might bite." Afterall, she wasn't even sure what things like that ate. The place had smelled like meat so who knew. Then he suggested riding them. She paled, looking as if he had just confessed something terrible. "What?" she gasped, "What? You can't be serious."

Harper giggled when he was poked, again, a gesture far too girly for any ten year old boy to be comfortable with. But he didn't care. "It tickles!" He exclaimed, grinning at the ostrich affectionately. "Good boy!" He praised, patting it's thick chest and large wings.

"It eats worms of course, like most birds." Harper blinked a few times. He knew that wasn't true.. (when you have wings on your feet, even the laziest boy tends to want to know a little bit about birds) but he was hoping she didn't.

"Manny, come here! His feathers are so soft!" He said, spying through the corners of his eyes at his friend in an attempt to get her to come closer.

Manny started to speak, then smiled, making her way over to where Harper was. She was careful to stay a just a little bit behind him, selfishly thinking that if it kicked it would hit him first. "Ok," she agreed, reaching one hand out cautiously. It sort of felt like a sheepdog, but a lot more muscley.

Harper grinned, "Alright, I'll hoist you up." He said matter-of-factly, as though the matter had already been decided. Moving in a circle so that he was behind Manny, he readied himself to be used as a stepping stool for her to get on top the Ostrich' back.

"Hurry up, before someone sees us!" It was a chance of a lifetime, after all, and Harper's tone of enthusiasm certainly made it seem as such.

Manny took a deep breath, looking terrified as she allowed herself to be helped up onto the creature. She screamed when it started to move, but she managed to silence herself by laying down close to it, holding tight to the fur. It started to stand up, wavering at the weight on its back. Her voice caught as it reached its head around, nipping curiously at her shirt. It didn't seem that bothered, probably because it had been near people before. Once she had a good hold she looked down at Harper, asking simply, "Are you going to get on one too?"

Harper grinned in a triumphant way, "Yeah!" He said, spinning around to look for another creature to mount. Poor, poor things.

"Only I don't see any m- Oh!" Spotting another ostrich, a slightly larger one that looked (as far as anyone might be able to tell, but the scars, ruffled feathers and general 'evil gleam' in the eyes told enough) considerably meaner, Harper darted off. "Try to make yours move, Manny! This is gonna be so awesome! Like, so, so awesome! I mean, how many people get to ride aliens?! We ARE SO LUCKY!"

When he finally did get to his ostrich, it was a quite violent absurd game of chasing it around, jumping and grasping until a very disheveled Harper got on top it. He grinned toward Manny.

Manny tapped the bird's sides with her heels, screaming as it sprinted forward, nearly throwing her off. Her own seemed to be fairly nice in comparison to his, and it turned out the reason it started was because it thought she wanted to play. Which really, she did. Just she hadn't registered it as the same meaning quite yet. "Harper!" she shouted, staring in awe as he mounted the scary looking one, "Be careful!"

Harper's 'fear' from earlier was either staged or some particularly strange nerve had been tingled, as now anything resembling fear was ENTIRELY replaced by the dorky white haired ten year old holding tight to what could only be referred to as a 'bucking' ostrich.

"WoooOOO Ooo- MAnnn - EEE - YYY! Thisss is sooOO FUN!" Harper scrambled out, out of breath, but apparantly having the time of his life. Things were going relatively smoothly until the ostrich Harper was 'mounted' on turned it's evil gleam on Manny and her Ostrich, and quite instantly started charging.

Manny shrieked and tugged on her own's fur, hoping to incite some sort of reaction. Sensing its own danger the large female stood up to her height, fanning her floppy wings out and squawking angrily at the other. However it also began to step sideways to avoid collision, soon breaking into a full sprint around the edge of the exhibit. Manny couldn't hear anything at this point, screaming so loud she couldn't so much as hear her own thoughts.

Harper's ostrich took on the chase perfectly. The other fleeing ostrich seemed to ignite some sort of stampeding flock, and from everywhere ostriches that had been unseen before began to join in.

Harper, however, was cackling with glee. "FASTER, GO!" He screamed, holding on tight just the same. He glanced at Manny and couldn't help but snicker inbetween his cackles, which resulted in a severe gasping for breath, just as some spectators began to notice the colorful forms of children atop the rampaging ostrich.

"Uh oh!" Harper expertly deduced, his 'trouble' senses tingling. "Manny, they are gonna catch us!" He said, doing his best to yell over her screams.

Manny was too busy clinging to the bird for dear life to be concerned with trouble, her only thought on the matter being that maybe the adults would be able to help her get off this stupid thing. "They better hurry up!" she shrieked as she opened one eye, seeing that her own mount had no intention of stopping. Before she could think the bird launched clumsily into the air, it's massive legs sending a segment of fence to the ground. It cleared the obstacle with a stumble then took off again, now darting amongst the crowd. It was sort of fun Manny admitted to herself, cautiously opening her other eye. At the very least she hadn't fallen off yet.

Harper's eyes narrowed jealously on Manny when her bird managed to ESCAPE FROM IT'S PRISON. His own bird made a turn, but with a little bit of pleading and beckoning, Harper managed to corral the bird out of the pen just before the 'red alerted' zoo keepers closed it off to the last few ostrich.

He looked over the crowds of people dodging left and right for Manny, and finally saw her. "MANNY, THIS IS AWESOME! THEY CAN.. LIKE TAKE US TO CHINA OR SOMETHING!!" He yelled, briefly thinking such would be entirely possible. For a moment, he thought he saw his mother, but decided just as quickly it would be best not to let the thought of her ruin his fun.

Manny attempted to steer her bird by tugging on the feathers at the base of its neck, and found that it was fairly easy. "Or at least out of here," she joked, a little afraid of being caught now that they had so obviously broken the rules. She saw the group she had come with sitting off by the food court, but fortunately those that turned to stare didn't recognize her.

Harper managed to get his ostrich closer to Manny, close enough to see her anyway. He looked over and grinned, flailing a free hand in a brief 'look, one hand!' show off before holding on again.

Unfortunately for the pair, the zoo had counter measures for such things. Two very serious looking zoo keepers suddenly jumped in their path complete with instruments used for retraining 'ornery' ostrich, which Harper's ostrich at least knew better than to will against. Sooner than he'd like, Harper's ostrich came to a hault, and sent him catapulting over it's head into a nearby bush.

And, unfortunately still, it was INDEED Harper's mother that he had seen earlier and who was now barreling toward the demounted boy.
