"It's okay," shrugged Shouko, pulling her legs towards her chest and taking another sip of soda. She watched him sit down and vaguely wished for the more innocent ages of childhood before un-pausing the movie.
She'd forgotten a bit of the plot of the previous installment, and found herself a bit lost. Turning to Teagan, she whispered, "Why are they in Singapore, anyway?"
Where was Singapore, anyway?

"I think they're trying to bring Jack back. You know, cause the Kraken ate him in the last one," he explained, tugging off his jacket. The black shirt beneath was a fairly old one, but it still fit him fairly well. "And I guess the guy there knows something," he added, not really remembering what had happened in this one. He had taken a date to see it when it came out, and hadn't really been paying attention.

"Oh," said Shouko, vaguely remembering. "Right." She sank back into the cushions and contented herself with watching Random Asian Dude A and Random Asian Dude B pick a fight with a scantily clad heroine and someone she had been dead certain was both a villain, and, well, dead. The garden had really done a number on her pop-culture knowledge.
And then Will showed up, and then the party started.
"Now I remember what makes these movies so great," she smiled. "The explosions."

Tea was honestly a little surprised by this statement, having figured her more the romantic type. Most girls were, weren't they? "Yeah, me too," he agreed cheerfully, reaching to turn the sound up, "There's some pretty cool ones. Hey, um, if you don't mind me asking, do you have a boyfriend?" It felt weird slipped into the conversation like that, but he wasn't sure he could have made himself ask it any other way.

Shouko glanced in his direction and blushed. "Going back to the bit with me spending the last eight months in Eden, do you honestly think I've had time?" she asked, trying to laugh it off.
Unless she was supposed to name him. After all, they'd kissed. And he'd been good at it, even if they were both drunk at the time.
"So, um," she stammered, "No."
On screen, Elizabeth and Will were being equally awkward. Oh yeah, she had kissed Jack, hadn't she?

"Oh." He stammered, mentally slapping himself, "I'm sorry. Um." He hesitated, looking back at the screen for something to change the subject. Finding nothing but a similar situation he sighed, "For everything. I shouldn't have taken advantage of you like that. It was just. I hadn't seen you in so long and you looked so... I don't know, so beautiful and grown up."

Shouko's face turned nearly as pink as her hair. "Thank you," she twittered, looking at her soda. She couldn't pronounce more than half the ingredients she saw listed, and that made her a bit queasy. She leaned over, set the near-empty can on the floor, and sat back up, just in time to be greeted by a frostbitten sailor breaking off his frozen toe.
"Oh, that's just disgusting," she said, leaning back against the pillows.
At least the scenery was nice, she thought, like it was any compensation.
"So, you moved out," she observed.

"Yeah, I started to feel like I wasn't going anywhere there. I know this isn't the best place, but I like it," he told her, trying not to comment on the 'gross' special effect that he found just a little cool. "So, what about you?" he asked, leaning back on his hands, "What's the great Miss Shouko got planned for herself? You and Tyyne were always smarter than me, you going to go to school?"

"Not at the moment," she sighed. "Mom's gone, Miss Lena vanished, I can't find Tyyne - I think she might be in Eden, but I'm not sure. Mostly it's all I can do to keep everything going. I mean, someone's gotta hand out flowerpots, right?" she asked, looking from him to the screen.
"Oh, wow," she breathed, first noticing the starscape and its reflection, but then shivering.
It reminded her of Eden, and of the endless starry sky with the constellations she didn't recognize. She hugged her knees to her chest.

Feeling as if he'd hit a bad note Teagan moved a little closer to her, putting one arm around her shoulders, "I'm sure everything's ok." He thought for a moment before deciding to impart something on her. "Since Tyy and I got stuck in Eden I've kind of felt a connection to her. When she first disappeared I started getting nightmares again, but they got better and now they've stopped coming. So I don't think she's in Eden," he told her, feeling a weight come of his chest, "At least, not right now."

Shouko nodded and moved a little closer to him. "I've had to go back a few times since," she muttered. "I think there are a lot of people we knew when we were younger who are stuck there. When I was there, I was with Madeline, and when I went back I found Mort. I tried to look for Tyyne, but I couldn't find her. I just... couldn't."
"Oh, look!" she exclaimed, her attention drawn back to the screen. "I guess that's 'World's End', huh?"
She leaned forward for a moment, watching the action play out, and then sat back again.

Tea felt his fur bristle, and looking away from the screen as his ears pinned themselves down. "You're a lot braver than I am," he admitted, "I haven't been willing to go back since... Well, you know." He licked his lips, hoping to repair the dry mouth he'd gotten at the thought. "It's too much for me, getting my soul torn out of my body. It's scary. I mean, I know you and Tyy are plant souls, and she didn't seem to be affected the same way but me. I actually became a lemur," he stammered, looking back to the screen to avoid eye conact with her, "I feel like a coward, I know I could help but I- I just can't do it."

"It's hard to go back," nodded Shouko, staring at the screen. Jack's fragmented personality and slapstick wasn't helping as much as it should have. "I turned into a tree the first time I was there, and even when I go back, it's hard not to be the tree."
She leaned her head against his shoulder but kept her eyes fixed on the screen. "You're not a coward," she said. "You survived it, didn't you?"

"I don't know really," he admitted, "Like, sometimes I wake up and I can't feel my legs and I panic, you know? I think I'm back there." He sighed, hanging his head in his hands, "I've done a lot of stupid s**t trying to get rid of it." The pallor of the moon on the screen gave him a sickly look, one rarely seen on the teenager, "I had to watch that b***h with Tyyne and I couldn't do anything. It's frustrating. I should be strong, like you guys are but..." He shook his head, "I shouldn't have brought it up."

"I go back because there are others stuck there, kids we knew when we were their age," muttered Shouko, head still against his shoulder. "It's not because I'm brave. I don't know what happened to you guys there, but sounds worse than what happened to me." She looked back at the screen and contemplated the plot for a moment. Everything in it seemed to be reminding her of Eden, and she still didn't particularly enjoy thinking about it.
"I don't like going there," she said. "I do it because I have to. The younger ones, they're not like us. They need someone to help them get out. But I'm always scared, maybe this time will be the time I get stuck as a tree for good."
She looked at the screen again and sighed as a green flash lit it up.
"Maybe this wasn't a good choice of movie."
