"I-I'm coming~" she promised, catching up as fast as her little cub-legs would allow. Why were boys always so much faster than her? Her cousins Rudo and Abrafo left her behind too, if they weren't being careful. "Sorry, Uncle Riko!"

When Mira caught up, Riko nodded at her and continued on towards the waterhole- now carefully assuring that she stayed at his side. "Don't worry! I'm faster than I think sometimes," he said arrogantly, again not thinking a great deal about what he was saying with respect to how it might make Mira feel.
After much happy walking, the waterhole was finally within plain sight and quick reach. Riko couldn't see any good feathers or flowers right away, and that dampened his spirits a bit. It might take more looking than expected!
"Ok, do you see anything good?" he asked, stopping and stretching out his neck to try to get a better look.

"It's okay!" Mira was happy to accept that Riko was not only faster than her, but generally better - he was her uncle, after all, and she liked her uncle a lot! Of course he was cooler. The cub was too young and too naive to find anything wrong with that yet.
Something good? Eager to be helpful, and to make up for being such a slow runner, she scuttled to have a good look around. Climbing atop a small rock, she peeked over to see what was on the shady side and crowed, "Look, Uncle Riko! Flowers!"

Riko was not as resourceful as Mira, not thinking to climb rocks to get a good look around or even just to see the other side. He was more focused on what he could see from where he was standing, and was very pleased when Mira called out that she had found something.
"Oooh?" he hummed, scrambling over to where Mira was and jogging around the rock to get a look. When he saw the flowers, he immediately grinned, "Good! We have flowers now."
He reached out and did his best to pull out the flowers using his teeth. Not getting a good grip, he only caught one and instead of getting a whole flower he only got the head of one to pop off. It was very clearly his good luck to have Mira with him, because he wasn't going to get this done very well on his own!

Watching her uncle's blunder with flower-picking, Mira couldn't help but giggle. "No, not like that!" she informed him matter-of-factly, but still with a ripple of laughter under her words. "You've gotta be careful! Flowers are del-deli-...um, del'cate. Like girls!"
Sliding off the rock, she gingerly took the stem of a flower between her teeth and pulled - and voila, flower!
...complete with a few dirty roots.

Mafuriko was not pleased with Mira's giggles and instructions on how to pull the flowers out right, but he watched her. Part of him hoped she'd make the same mistake just so he could laugh at her too, and he bit his lip instead of saying something. They had to get flowers, so instead of grumbling he tried it out himself.
This time, he got a good grip on the stem and managed to get more than just the head- but not much more. He was still trying a little too hard, but he had some stem this time. He set it down, and looked at Mira.
"How many do you think we need?"

Mira was happily oblivious to Mafuriko's displeasure at her display of flower-picking 'skill' as she set her own prize down, only to step on it somewhere around the middle and pull off the dirty roots. The taste of dirt in her mouth wasn't exactly fabulous, but clumpy roots weren't very pretty, and this was for her aunt! She couldn't just leave them there.
"Umm..." She thought the matter over carefully, though her serious expression was ruined somewhat as she licked and smacked her lips to try and get rid of the bothersome dirt. "What're we gonna make?"
It was an important sort of detail.

Riko pawed absently at the two small flowers at his feet, watching Mira pull the roots off of hers and then watched as she considered. This was why she was here, she'd be better at thinking about how many flowers would be best because she was a girl, and Riko didn't want to have too many flowers, or too few! He was stunned when she asked what they were going to make, having forgotten that they hadn't yet decided.
"Um," he stammered, "I don't know, what do you think? We could make like, a necklace or something- do you think we could stick all the flowers and stuff together right?"

"We could make a necklace," she agreed. Necklaces were always pretty! "We'll need more flowers with lots of stem, though." Short ones weren't any good for necklaces! You couldn't exactly put a knot in something that wasn't long enough to put a knot in, now could you?

Riko nodded as Mira supported the necklace idea, looking back at their pitiful little bunch of flowers. They would definitely need more, and it looked like Mira would have to be the one to get the flowers. As much as he hated to admit it, he couldn't do it right himself.
"Ok, you get the flowers," he said, "I'll look for something else to add into it."
He avoided mentioning this was because she was better at picking flowers. And with that decided, he nodded and hopped off to see if he could find some pretty feathers or something to add in!

"Okay!" As usual, Mira agreed. After watching her uncle hop off in search of other pretty things, she set to picking more flowers with extra care. She didn't always get it right, and ended up with a small pile of too-short flowers as well, but eventually had what she thought would be a sufficient number of necklace flowers. She felt terrible about the ones she'd messed up, though - it was almost like she'd picked them for no good reason!
Following a moment of thought, the cub set to digging a small hole. She'd bury them, and then they'd be dirt again.

While Mira gathered up some flowers, Riko went about looking for something nice to add into the necklace. His only ideas were leaves and feathers. Leaves weren't so pretty, but flowers definitely could be! All he had to do was catch some birds! With this in mind, he sneaked around the waterhole. It was a busy place, even some birds like to hang around.. but they were wise to someone as skill-less and obvious as this juvenile. After several failed attempts, he was getting grumpier about all of this.
Luck, however, was on his side. Yes, the waterhole was a very busy place. He didn't actually have to catch anything, if one looked carefully.. there were loose feathers around the ground. Gathering up a couple rather tattered feathers (the best he could find, really!) he headed back to Mira.
"I got some feathers," he announced through a mouthful of them, then he spit the out, "What do you think?"
The saliva did not make them that much more attractive.

They really weren't the most fantastic feathers, but...those were hard to find. You'd practically have to get them right when they fell off the bird! And it could have been worse, anyway - they could have been vulture feathers. Who wanted those?
"They're fine," she settled on, smiling brightly. "Unless you want to find a bird and ask." Hint hint?

Actually asking a bird had never occurred to Mafuriko, and now that he had scared off a couple he wondered if that might still work. He wrinkled his nose and looked around, there were still some around of course.. but his chance of getting a friendly chat with any seemed veeeery unlikely.
"I don't know if anyone would give me feathers now," he said, looking back at the feathers, "These will have to do for now, I guess. Unless you want to go ask."

Uncle Riko was very silly sometimes. Mira couldn't help but giggle again. "I'll try! What color, you think?"
