Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the best know yaoi couple Yuki and Shuichi from Gravitation? And doesn't Naruto strike you as more of a Shuichi type, they're both so loud and hyper. Where as Sasuke is most like Yuki, all cool and quiet like, plus they're both older than their partners.
All I'm saying is, Naruto's character is better matched for the uke role.

I actually answered this in the essay, too, so I won't go entirely into it again. All I'll say is review what was said about Naruto's personality, and question whether them both being loud is enough to qualify their personalities as the same. Most guys that I know are loud (especially younger ones, like Naruto), that doesn't make them anything like Shuichi, and it doesn't make them ukes. Or, you know, gay at all. Also, Shuichi is more of the flamboyant, stereotypically gay kind of loud, while Naruto is a 'young boy, yelling every idea that comes to him' kind of loud.

Yuki and Shuichi may be the most famous yaoi couple, but it's honestly not one I particularly like. I won't go into that, because I don't want the angry yaoi mob to come after me xD The only thing I can really say is that Naruto's only similarity to Shuichi is that they are both loud. Why does one character have to fit into the uke role? Because all that role is, in most fanfiction and even yaoi manga, is the female role. Why does it have to be that way? I like yaoi because it's two men together. Why can't the relationship be something new, that suits both characters' personalities without turning one of them into a girl or shoving them into that role?

All that aside, your argument is based on stereotypes. Sasuke is cool and quiet like Yuki, obviously a top. Naruto is loud like Shuichi, obviously a bottom. I think, instead of going by yaoi fandom uke stereotypes, we should look more at the character's actual personality, and decide for ourselves whether, as a character, they would prefer to top or bottom during sex, if that is our focus. The focus of my essay, though, is more on exposing the portrayal of a 'girly' Naruto when canon Naruto is not girly at all, and explaining why that OOC portrayal pushes some people away from SasuNaru. Even if you hold that Naruto's loudness makes him Shuichi-like, do you honestly see him as being canonly girly, as fanfiction portrays him to be?

Neither Sasuke or Naruto is weak or girly. The reason why I like yaoi is because it is two men together. I think that the problem with SasuNaru many times is that people are so used to heterosexual couples that they want to find a character in a yaoi pairing to push into the typically feminine role. However, in a pairing where both characters are masculine, this can only be achieved by changing one character’s personality. This is fine in something like Gravitation, where Shuichi naturally accepts the feminine role in the relationship, or in yaoi involving original characters, where you might have a more typically submissive or feminine character. However, when neither character fits easily into this role, as with Sasuke and Naruto, instead of forcing one of them into it, I think it’s better to envision an entirely new kind of relationship that doesn’t fit into society’s typical idea of a heterosexual pairing. After all, isn’t that what yaoi’s supposed to be all about?

Well I guess you said it all... 3nodding

Hearing people bringing arguments about who is the most feminine of the two therefore has to be the uke makes my hair stand up and my teeth grit.
Seriously... we're talking about two (masculine) guys who built their relationship over rivalry!

One has the right to fantasize (ugh spelling?) over whatever floats one's boat but trying to force other people into it just makes no sense...

Thank you! It's nice to have people agreeing. Both the threads where this was posted have mostly received arguments that don't get any response when I try to respond. xD; I'm really glad to get occasional agreement.

And yes, I agree, there's nothing wrong with liking SasuNaru. My purpose in making this thread was explaining why some people prefer NaruSasu. That DID involve pointing out what I see as flaws in the fandom's portrayal of SasuNaru, but yeah, that wasn't my purpose xD

have you answered them with a "why not NaruSasu?" And ask them to give you good, solid, reasons for not having SasuNaru?

For me, i would see them taking turns topping or bottoming, I wouldn't mind either way. They both are men and are manly in their own rights and both of them have some girlish qualities. What human don't have qualities that the other sex has?

Also, what makes SasuNaru so popular is the overly written Girly!Naruto. It poisons the mind of new comers of the fandom before they have time to develop their own thought about the pairing. It happened to me and effected my view on the matter greatly, but with some persuasion and great, muscley men, fan art, i thought otherwise.

The last statement just got me off my train of thought... I'll finish replying when i remember what i was about to type. whee

To be honest, I really wouldn't care who tops or bottoms, either. And I didn't, at first. But then, when trying to find good SasuNaru or NaruSasu fanfiction, ALL I could find was SasuNaru in which Naruto was portrayed as being extremely girly. I went through a phase where I really wanted to read some good fanfiction with a pairing involving Sasuke and Naruto, but when all I could find was SasuNaru fanfiction with a very badly characterized Naruto, it kind of soured me towards that portrayal of the pairing. So, that's why I prefer NaruSasu now. I started out with no real preference as to who topped and who bottomed, but the fandom itself made me dislike SasuNaru xD;

And yes, I agree. That's part of my problem with the whole feminized Naruto thing... it's so popular that people actually believe it's canon, which is really unbelievable to me. Naruto is one of the most utterly boyish characters I've ever seen in an anime, that's why it's so surprising to me when people say things like, "No way, Naruto's such an adorable, girly uke!" I'm kind of like, "...Have you SEEN the series?" I have no problem with people preferring to have him characterized that way in fanfiction... it's a taste thing. My only problem is when people say that NaruSasu is the strange dynamic, using badly characterized Naruto as their evidence.

Anybody who thinks that Naruto in his right mind would just let Sasuke take control has either never seen the anime/read the series, or is on crack. Or sugar for that matter. Personally, I think Naruto would wind up on the bottom more often than not, but that's just because he loses the fight for control, which is why I like SasuNaruSasu. 60/40 Sasuke. And if either of them heard anybody say that they were "girly", I think that person would be disemboweled rather rapidly. Or perhaps something a bit more painful...

xD Sasuke, I think, would go for the disemboweling, if accused of being girly. Naruto, I see as more the type to drop his pants to prove just how girly he is not.

Thanks for a very well-thought-out opinion. <3

I fully understood (and share) your purpose and I'd have done the same if I had the time and if my english was better.

Perhaps you already know this fic but if it's not the case, check Zrina's "The Sound Of Dreams" out. It's the least OOC fanfic I've ever read, in my opinion. It's long. I know. But the best chapters are not around the end of it. If you share my vision of it all as much as I think you do, you may love it too. The very first chapters are a little weird but as soon as the plot is settled it's a pleasure to read.

Ah! Yes, I used to follow that fic religiously. I kind of lost interest at one point when the plot veered in a direction that I wasn't sure I liked... I think Orochimaru was back in Naruto's body and had like... done something with Naruto and Sasuke's eyes... I can't remember, but it kind of disturbed me. I may be mixing it up with another fic, but I know I have read a good portion of The Sound of Dreams.

If I were to recommend any NaruSasu fics, it would have to be any of Arigatomina's fics. Check out her profile on Fanfiction.net, if you haven't already. I knew her work from when I was in the YYH fandom, and it's still as excellent as ever. Her characterizations of Naruto and Sasuke are perfect. She does the pairing without altering their personalities at all, and I LOVE that.

Well you stopped reading around the end of what I labeled "the best chapters", so you don't miss much. The end was a little disappointing, compared to those fantastic chapters of the first part...

Thanks for making me know about Arigatomina, I just bookmarked her. I'll read her stories later since it's too freakin late to read anything for now, and I'm fighting hard to stay awake. Anyway I'll let you know what I think of her stuff.

I'm also a narusasu fan. But honestly i think it would turn more out like narusasunaru if they would get into a relationship, which i doubt.
I totaly agree with you that Naruto is put down as a girl too much, and there are not enough sasunaru stories where Naruto stays Naruto. Also I hate sasuke being made girly as wel, cuz he isnt.
You pointed out some good points i missed sweatdrop .

I'll agree with you on that 3nodding ...and I don't know why but there is an up side to NaruSasu (I support both) because I don't think Kyubii will like being on the bottom sweatdrop (I guess it depends on the demon's gender) oh well....

And Sasuke just seems...you know metrosexual....>///>...he just has femine moments... sweatdrop
