Tone. High notes sound really ugly otherwise. Please, work on tone first. That goes for all instruments, not just clarinet.

Please, for the love of god. Tone.
Most experienced musicians will tell you that. There is nothing more painful then listening to an instrument out of tune with another. The smaller the gap the more horrendous the sound produced.
We're all about the tone in our bands, we're musicians. We play music. Not notes on the page. It has to sound nice. If it doesn't sound good then no one cares about your range.

I say that tone is more important. I mean high notes are nice but they're not that important. They're fun don't get me wrong I love them too, but tone is important, leave the really high stuff to the piccs.
If it's any consolation, I got second chair by ONE point cause my tone was off.

Tone, definatly, because you can blast all the high notes you want and still sound like crap, but if you have good tone, people will shut up and listen to you. ninja

Both of them are really important to be able to be the best, but it all starts at tone. I am second chair too! Woohoo! *high fives*

Just because you can play loud doesnt mean you can play better. Sometimes playing softer is the key
if you think you were judged unfairly though ask for a redo or a compotition for that chair :3 thats always fun

Tone is more important, because no one will listen if it's a crappy sound. solos, slow pieces etc. no one really will care unless you have a good tone.. (clarinetist by the way )

Definitely tone, but being able to play high notes is important if you want to be 1st part...

Tone. But ideally, first chair should have good notes and be able to play all the notes.

Tone. If you can play the high notes and you don't have the tone quality then what is the point. The notes won't sound right.

WEll if you wanna be first chair you need both... good high notes and good tone... with the notes getting over the break is one of the most important things but if you got that then just work on getting your high notes just right

tone. the lower-chaired clarinets in my band all have this weird watery tone, like there's a lot of spit in their clarinet.
