Let's start at the beginning...

A doll within a store of dolls; this is how Lanying felt as she stared at the rows upon rows of angel eggs on the shelf. She frowned at that thought as she brushed the non-existed dust from her dress roughly. Lanying, hated dolls with their pretty dresses and their shiny shoes, and cute accessories, because taking stock of her person, that would describe herself perfectly. As a result, dolls were a reminder to Lanying of what she could not have, mainly the freedom to act like a child. She could not play, for fear of ripping the ribbons from her lovely dress. Her mother even had the gall to take her out of gym class in fear that a scrap would damage Lanying as if she was made out of porcelain.

The thought of that memory made Lanying chuckled most bitterly, far too bitter for a girl of only twelve years. However, that had been her life; she could not even cut her ridiculously long hair, and longed to be like some of the other girls who had hair only to their shoulders. Better yet, she thought, just chop the whole thing off and be done with it. Why anyone would want to have hair as long as she, Lanying would never understand. It was a pity really that Lanying felt that way about herself, because she really was a lovely girl, and she did not have to work that hard to get her hair to cooperate with her. She was a shy and kind girl when she did not have violent thoughts on the subject of dolls, but she was also socially awkward.

Blame her mother for socially isolating the poor girl and her father for going along with it. They were an old fashion couple who believed that children should be seen and not heard. The couple had certainly practiced that making Lanying something to be seen only like a priceless china doll. To have parents like that, one could not blame Lanying for her seemingly unusual vindictiveness towards dolls, which would lead one who knew her to question why she was there. After all, it would displease her parents if she was arrested for property damage. The mere thought of her parents caused her to clutch her purse so tightly it was a wonder why she did not gorge holes into the fabric.

“Calm down Lan,” she muttered to herself darkly, “You’re doing this for grandpa remember?”

Her grandfather, whom was her mother’s father, was the only person she could honestly stand in her family. He and her grandmother when she had been alive, was a simple couple. Who had the unfortunate luck (in Lanying’s scathing opinion) to bore a daughter who thought nothing but grand parties and mingling with the wealthy like a princess. Even more unfortunately, her wish came true, and the poor old man watched as his daughter attempted to turn his granddaughter into some outdated lady. He could see the bitterness that welled up inside of the girl from years of isolation. For that reason, on her twelfth birthday did he present her with a card; not just any card. It was a gift card to the Descending Angels shop, with enough money to buy herself an angel egg and then some. Lanying of course had been horrified that her grandfather gave her in essence a doll for her birthday, her mother had been thrilled. When she had inquired angrily (being somewhat hurt by this action) why he had given her a doll for her birthday he whispered to her when he thought his daughter was not listening.

“You are too lonely Lan,” he sighed gustily, “I think this… angel will help you meet other people. As long as your mother thinks you are simply playing with dolls, she won’t know any better,” he reached out and patted her on the cheek, “Please Lan, for me? I want to see you happy for once.”

Lanying, did not see, or know how this skeleton of a doll could ever make her happy. If she was to be happy, she needed to be less of a doll. She doubted that getting a doll would cure her of that, but her grandfather, after her grandmother died was the only person who listened to her. Listened to her dreams, her wishes and let her, even for a small while be a kid when her mother wasn’t around. She looked back at the angel eggs and sighed, plucking one off the shelf with both hands.

“The least I can do is take you home,” she told the doll in resignation, “It’ll make grandpa happy, and I’d rather make him happy than to be like Mom.”

It was stupid, she thought to talk to a non-living thing like this, but she was going to give this a try. Who knew? Maybe he was right, her grandfather was rarely wrong, so maybe. In some odd way she did not know yet, this doll could help her. Lanying thought about that, at least it would give her an excuse to be away from the house. The realization brought a smile to her face for the first time since she had gotten here. That was her birthday gift, she was more sure of herself now as she walked away to pay for her egg.

It was not her doll that was her gift; it was the chance to be someone other than what people made her to be.

To the day we first met...

Time to hatch the egg...

Red and gold boxes were strewed across the normally neat canopy bed; some were left opened with the instruction manual on the floor. Sitting quite unladylike on the floor was Lanying who held up her angel egg to eye level. She had just finished kicking her troublesome servants out of her room, which was why her bed and floor was in such a state. Even though Lanying disliked dolls, she was doing this for her grandfather, and she was going to do this right. Not only she was going to do this right, but she was going to do this without any help. Besides, she had a feeling having help in making her own angel was not doing it right anyhow.

The girl scoffed at the written words on the instruction manual, it was obvious that even the manual was design to treat the angel as if it were a person. Well, she supposed, better a person than some doll to simply play with and display. In that case it was at least somewhat better than those stupid porcelain dolls that people brought their little girls which were only good for little girls to display to other little girls. Though she didn’t understand how anyone was supposed to bond with an inanimate object, but she was going to give it a try. Rereading the instructions one last time, she picked herself up off the floor, and grabbing her lavender bathrobe she headed towards the bath.

There was at least one advantage to kicking the maids out of the room under the excuse that she must do this herself, seeing that was the proper way of doing things. The best part was, she could set the bath herself. For the problem of having a maid draw the bath was that it was always too hot or too cool, the only person who knew best in how to draw the bath was the person taking the bath. Besides they would have thrown all that junk into the water that was suppose to make her smell nice and her skin soft. It would probably ruin the doll even though she was sure it was waterproof.

Once the bath water was at the preferred temperature, where it was hot, but not steaming and going to burn her skin off, Lanying slipped in setting her angel egg at the bathtub’s edge. She really didn’t need to wash, she was going to get a full bath anyhow later on in the evening, this was more for principle of the point. So once she was reasonably comfortable, the little girl plucked the egg from the edge and opened it up. Letting the shock absorbing liquid spill into the bathtub. She was sure the liquid would not harm her, as long, as the instruction manual had said, she did not indigest it. Carefully she wiped the remains of the liquid off of the doll, it once more reminded her of one of those ball dolls, and it was hard to believe it was going to end up as one of those slick dolls she had seen on TV.

“Well… I guess I should get put you in some skin huh?” she shook her head, “Great… now I’m talking to them.”

Twenty minutes later Lanying was lounging on her chair in front of the little laptop like thing that would allow her to complete her doll. At least complete it could be without clothes. The hair she had chosen was dark as her own, only it was a black blue instead of her black purple. She had trimmed the doll’s hair so it had long hair bangs, since she personally thought it would look good that way. Though she hadn’t decided yet about eye or skin colour. She mused at the doll that was floating in its container waiting to be formed. Personally she would need a doll she could actually stand carrying with her always, something that wouldn’t remind her so much of her.

“Hmm…. I think I’ll make it male,” she checked off one box bringing it up to the status points given to the angel, “I don’t want him to be small, but I don’t want him to be ridiculously large. Medium built then,” she murmured.

Now which type, she could just say power, but that would be so stereotypical for a boy, and while fast was good, she wanted him to have some fighting power.

“Balance,” she murmured.

Slowly she began to fill in the other bits of information, blue eyes she finally decided to go along with his hair, and normal skin tone like hers. All she had to do was come up with a good name for him. That really made her pause, as Lanying crossed her arms over her chest. It was such a difficult choice that she ended up looking through lists of names.

“I’ve never named a doll before,” she murmured under her breath, “Let’s see… I’m a Deus, so I’m like god, and he’s supposed to be fighting for me… so… hmm… it means my protector, or my awakened one, it also means in another language to be blessed with reason. I’m not sure about the reason part, but you are suppose to look smart in some way.

She thought about it, and thought about it, and finally began to type in the name. It was a short name, very much so, but it was better than some long ridiculous name that was long only for the sake of impressing.

“Eri will be your name,” she told the doll.

With a click of the enter key it was complete, and Eri, the long haired prince who would fight on her behalf opened his blue eyes for the first time.
