Halia, in her naive curiosity, hadn't realized that this presumably part-kalona stallion wouldn't know at least a little of his heritage. She'd assumed everyone knew about kalona. Her ears flicked back at his doubtful expression. "It's just what my parents told me, and they wouldn't have any reason to lie. It doesn't mean you're bad, though. Momma told me about a half-kalona she met once, who was nice to her."

"Of course it doesn't mean I'm bad!" Haya blurted out. "I'd bet that there are even nice kalona, just the only stories people tell are about the bad ones. "Mom wouldn't have bred with a kalona if it was trying to eat her." He didn't know the exact circumstances of it but figured that much was a given. The end of his tail was lashing now, flattening an unlucky patch of grass that was behind it.

"Sorry..." Halia muttered, looking away. "I didn't mean it like that." She'd never heard of nice kalona, so maybe he was right. He could be wrong too, though, and she'd always remember that when she saw other kalona-like Soquili. "Is your dad still around then...?"

"Well... no," Haya reluctantly admitted. "I never knew him. But I know he didn't hurt Mom or me." That had to count for something. Even if his father was an evil kalona the fact that he could associate with soquili for any amount of time without hurting them meant that there was a chance for more.

"Oh. Well...huh." Halia had to think about that for a few minutes. She hadn't really thought too deeply about how half-kalonas came about. Of how foals came about, for that matter. She'd have to ask her mother when she got back, or maybe Natsiya. ...Probably mom. Natsiya might get all huffy and think it's because I like a boy. "Maybe there really are nice kalona then, even if your dad's not around. I don't think I'd want to walk up to every one I saw and ask them whether they were or not, though."

Hayagriva looked over Halia critically and blew a snort of amusement when he was finished. "Yeah.... maybe you better not. If you ever did actually meet a mean one they'd probably eat you up. You don't look so tough." She didn't exactly look formidable. She looked... graceful. But he didn't imagine something that wanted to eat you would terribly care if you were graceful or not.
