The girl had never really adjusted too quickly, nearly anything at all. Something as simple as the change of seasons would have her uncomfortable in her skin, itching to run away from her family, even Hikari, as soon as the opportunity arose. Her lips pursed as she watched the clouds above float higher still and lost herself in the feeling of weightlessness. Mumma had gotten sick, the doctors said. Diae was gone, lost to some world and Sie was trapped in the station where the trains go and that just left the infant, thumb pressed to tight lips and long curled hair comforting both Prison and herself. And then this new man came. His weathered face that smelled of books and ink. He was new and represented change to the core as a stained hand gripped her small fingers tightly that autumn day and pulled her shakily forward. There was a girl too. Rose. A small smile sprouted on chubby cheeks as Sable thought of the like-minded woman. She was kind, read stories and pretended she couldn’t care less. She did though; Sable could feel it and even Prison began to like her.

They went to visit the red headed woman in the hospital at first, long visits with Sable sitting on the bed playing with plastic knights and horses while Prison curled atop her head and watched the thinning guardian. The visits grew shorter and soon they stopped. They said that Hikari wasn’t herself anymore. That she changed. Sable didn’t like change. Prison said it was because she started to forget who she was, that something was wrong in her brain. The dragon would stare at Sable’s face, dark scales glinting in the chilled moonlight while his tail curled protectively around her ankle. - Westley’s our papa now… He loves us as much as he loves Rose-

At first Sable didn’t understand. She wasn’t particularly upset by this change, something inside her pushed that it was right. That Rose and Westley were there for her now and Hikari would probably be lost in the thinning room forever. It was gradual, still made her nails itch underneath the skin. Rose told her to stop biting but it calmed her in a way that was similar to Westley’s large hand stroking her long hair or Prison’s warm breath on his neck when he settles across her shoulders.

This was an introduction to change and maybe it would be one she could just barely handle.
