I can just about get a ninth now. I used to be unable to play the second section of Rachmaninov's prelude in G minor (forgotten the op. but it's the famous one) but now I can, so I think my hands can stretch quite a bit more. Just kind of dislocate my fingers...

I have a friend who is the most amazing jazz pianist, and my hands are the size of his palms, I'm sure he can reach a 14th at least. No fair.

There's a Ravel piece on the grade 8 syllabus I'm doing, which I looked at but just didn't like so I'm playing the Milau piece instead. I really haven't listened to much of his stuff though.

To Wings: My teacher decided to make me play a de Falla danse for Impressionist/Post Romantic section.

To Emmanuela: I totally envy your friend. gonk By the way, I think I know which Rachmaninoff prelude you meant. I love it. Speaking of dislocating one's fingers, I think I can reach a really uncomfortable major 10th that way...

Tenth. I can do an 11th, but it requires me to put my hand on the edge of the piano. A little hard to explain, but I can't suddenly play an 11th in the middle of a piece.

@Fryderyk: I love Spanish pieces <3 I've only played one piece by de Falla a long time ago...I think it was "The Miller's Dance."

@Septomor: I know what you mean. I can do a risky major 10th that way as well. XD

I know, I hate him (well, not hate as really really envy, he is very nice I should not say hate). It's so unfair, though...

My teacher taught me how to cheat by playing two notes with one finger; it's a very useful techniqueXD

Same here(on the teacher thing). She taught me it so that I can play those chords in a certain Chopin Polonaise that I'm sight reading right now for fun. xd . Well..guys do naturally have larger hands, right? Being taller and their proportions(Art teacher at school told us that if both a girl and a guy put their wrist at their chin, the girl's middle finger would reach just over the bridge of the nose while the guy's middle finger would be right on the forehead near the scalp. That's crazy) gonk

It's so unfair, although I've found a friend who is absolutely amazing at piano and her hands are the same size as mine so I suppose if you keep on practicing it doesn't matter. But still. Hmph.

A tenth? For myself that is amazing. I can reach a ninth. I have been playing piano for over seven years and yet that is all my tiny hands will let me do. My brother however, has huge hands. He can reach an eleventh or twelveth. But he's insane, and a music major. wink

I can stretch a 9th... And it hurts a lot.

Too much ninths hurt my hand too. XD The occasional ones are fine, but if it's a piece full of ninths (like the 3rd mvt of Rahbee's Piano Sonata No. 2), I'd be having trouble as well.

Oi...I must say the same about tenths. A few scattered throughout a piece is fine, but if they dwell on tenths, like that run in a transcription of Stars and Stripes Forever, I'm pretty much screwed.

TENTHS!! AHHHH. D:

I fail at tenths.
I can only play them if it's a C to E chord. sadly. or.. if the piece goes REALLY slow. smile
i can reach ninths fairly well, however.
Curse meh small, putrid hands.

We aren't too bad off already, the lot of us here. I have friends who can barely manage to play octaves. Now that is sad. ^^;

Yah but my piano teacher is wanting me to do finger stretches over the piano so i can get a good solid tenth.
i'm not quite there, but. smile

I do too, and yes, it is quite unfortunate. Inability to play octaves means that much romantic and beyond pieces are beyond(and before too, to a lesser degree from my observations) your grasp. Many wonderful ones too.

My piano teacher never directly asked me to do finger stretches, but I do it myself anyways. I always watch for a limit so I don't end up permanently damaging my hands, like poor Robert Schumann did, if I recall correctly?
