Abunai glared at him. "Just try it!" she hissed. "You'll never get to come down. You may live in the trees, but the stream is down here. And that I say you can't use, and I invoke ancient kylan law to prevent you."

Susamajii shrugged. "Then I'll drink the dew, lady. But don't even thing about using the shade from my leaves!" His tone was only mockingly serious, but he had to jump into a takeoff when she snapped at him. "Feisty one!" he shouted when he was back in the treetops.

Abunai snapped futilely at the air where Susamajii had been. He was a surprisingly fast flyer. She hurled insults up at him, but when he didn't come back down, she, quivering with rage, took her morning drink and then fled back to her clearing. Normally she didn't believe in sleeping during the day, but she needed to sleep this off.

Susamajii grinned down at the angry Abunai. She's so pretty when she's angry! He flew up, and followed her to her clearing. So, this is where she sleeps... A wave of tenderness overcame him as she curled up and the anger and tension left her face. He wanted deeply to fly down there and curl himself around her, protecting her from the big, bad world. However, he reasoned, she would kill me if I did that. So instead, he remained in the canopy, watching her nap.

Abunai only slept for a short time. When she awoke, the sun was still not at its zenith. Her stomach rumbled, and she decided to go hunting. As she left the clearing, she darted from bush to bush, hoping that that insolent male wasn't tracking her. Pride kept her out of the darkest shadows, even though that was her natural environment. She knew that her prey would see her coming, but she was sure that her speed and strength could easily overcome this handicap. As she passed the stream, the fat fish wallowing in the shallows made her crave a nice splake. She poised herself above the water, jaws open, and waited for a large fish to pass by. Soon enough, a sparkling silver trout slipped by. She plunged her head under the water and bit the fish, but it struggled and she slipped into the water with her prize. Normally, the stream would be no match for the strong kylan, but it was running especially fast today, and she was still a little sleepy from her nap. The current caught her up and she dashed her head against a sunken boulder. She slipped into unconsciousness without ever releasing the fish or realizing what had happened.

Abunai was very lucky that Susamajii was still following her. He swooped down as soon as he saw her go under. He was hoping for some playful banter, but when he realized that she wasn't coming back up, he dove faster to see what was wrong. He saw her limp body floating downstream, with a massive fish still flopping in her jaws, and realized what must have happened. He ran alongside the stream, making sure her head didn't go under, until he could jump in and pull her out. His feathers stuck together and his soggy fur made it difficult to maneuver, but somehow he pulled her from the dangerous current. Gasping, he dragged her to a flat, dry place and with a swift snap of his teeth put an end to the miserable fish. He prodded her chest until she coughed hard and began to breathe again. "Can you stand?" he asked.

Abunai coughed around her fish, spitting it out onto the forest floor. She heard somebody asking her a question, and she shook her head. It hurt. "What happened?" she said dazedly.

"You almost drowned," Susamajii said flatly. "I pulled you out. And you caught a fish." She apparently doesn't notice it's me, he thought. I don't know if this is good or bad.

"Mmm..." she moaned. "You're... you're Su... Susamajii, aren't you? Didn't I tell... " She winced in pain. "It doesn't... matter now. I think my leg is broken. The rocks are very sharp in there..."

Susamajii looked down at her haunches. Her upper leg was bloodied and her paw was at a strange angle. "..."

As Susamajii stared in shock, Abunai shut her eyes. "I'll never be able to walk right again, if I can even drag myself back to..." Ever suspicious, she narrowed her eyes. "Back to where you won't follow me. You ought to finish me now, make it fast at least."

Susamajii drew back in horror. "No! I won't! Come on." He rolled her over, ignoring her protesting cries. He knew he was hurting her, but he also knew that he had to get her home. "I'm taking you back." He hoisted her on to his back, blanketing her in his wings. He knew they were getting bloody, but he didn't care. She was surprisingly light. He expected to hear angry growlings, or at the least, be bitten all to pieces. Instead, she said nothing, just whimpered. Soon, the whimpering stopped. He turned his head back as he walked, scared for what might have happened. Happily, he could see the sharp rise and fall of her heaving sides. She's just passed out from the pain... He knew nothing about healing, and was worried about what he could do. Still... it is just a broken leg... "You'll be ok. Don't worry," he said out loud, more for his benefit than hers.

It seemed to take forever to reach Abunai's glade. When he finally reached it, Susamajii carefully laid her down on the leaves, out of breath and panting. He sighed and looked at her. Her face was wracked with pain, and her fur, still damp from the dunking, clung to her, making her look very small and weak. He pushed her into a mossy indention, obviously the place where she slept, taking care that her injured leg was free from any painful pressure. Her breathing was ragged, but stable. "You'll live, my lady," he wheezed. "Whether or not I will is questionable." With that, he flopped down beside her, exhausted.

Abunai awoke the next morning unaware of the dull throbbing in her leg. Her eyes were dazzled by the bright sun, but she was able to make out another kylan in the clearing. It was laying several feet away, watching her. A rustling of feathers told her it was the pesky winged male who had just invaded her territory. "You!" she growled, lunging at him, which quickly turned into howls of pain.

Susamajii ran to her as she fell, nudging her back onto her bed. "Temper, temper. What a way to treat somebody who just saved your life, and probably your leg." Upon her puzzled stare, he gently said "You almost drowned yesterday, Abunai. You fell in the water while fishing, and you broke your leg. I brought you back here, and I'm not leaving, no matter what you say, until you get better." If you don't want me around after that, then I'll leave, he thought to himself. But I hope you won't want that.
