Kal ducked his head sheepishly and flattened his wings closer against his body. "No, I saw you fly really well, I can't fly like that." He was embarrassed to admit he had been watching the other stallion, but hopefully it would be less embarrassing than actually having to prove that he was not as good.

"That? That wasn't flying... That was just fooling around." He chuckled, fluffing his feathers before trotting towards the open space. "Most Soquili don't fly like that... It's alot safer if you don't. I just like taking risks. Something about it just gives me a feeling of freedom. Have you ever felt free before?"

"B-but you can fly well enough to enjoy taking those risks," Kal stammered, taking a couple hesitant steps to follow the other stallion. He knew it was safer if he didn't fly like that, in fact it was safer still if he didn't fly at all. Especially on a day that had any more wind than today.
The question was a little puzzling though. "I-I don't think I understand what you mean. I-I'm not tied up by two leggers or anything, doesn't that make me free?"

"Not necissarily... There are some days when my flying is downright awful. Doesn't do much to stop me though." He nickered softly, tilting a grin towards the other male. "It only looks good... Can't truly appreciate whether or not something is good unless you try it yourself."
He paused after a moment, tilting his head towards the sky. He spread his wings, testing the air for a moment. "Unless you really spread your wings and test the wind you're tied to the ground. That's what flying's all about. Freedom."

"Oh, that kind of freedom..." Kal looked a little put off. Sometimes he felt that kind of exhilaration on a windy day when he could run into the wind and let the breeze blow past him, but he had never felt it flying. He hadn't stretched his wings much lately though, and Telikos did say it would be good to practice, maybe he could fly for a bit. But there was one thing he had to make sure of first.
"I-if I fly with you, d-do you promise you won't laugh?"

"If I laugh it'll be because I'm enjoying myself... Not because I'm laughing at you." He brought the shoulder of one of his wings up so that he could 'salute' the other stallion. Even he knew that there was a time to laugh at others and a time to behave... He could behave for once.

Kal nodded nervously, and then spread his wings to test the air. They weren't nearly as large or pretty as the other stallion's wings, but his appearance had never been his choice and thinking on it would only make him miserable. He would trust the stallion not to laugh, but he still didn't make any move to get into the air right away. He would make his running launch hopefully while the other wasn't looking.

He pawed at the ground for a moment, testing the soil beneath him for a moment before taking a few running steps, wings spreading to lift him into the air with a firm flap. He took himself higher, letting the wind lift him until he could even out. The air was still beautiful and everything seemed to be just right for flight.

Kal felt reassured that not even the large wings of the other stallion were capable of taking off from a standstill, and had kicked into a run of his own before the white and blue one was too far off the ground. Once he had gained enough speed a strong flap of his wings got him into the air, but gaining height was certainly more of a struggle.

Once he was certain that the wind would hold him he swooped down to a more suitable hight before evening out. "See. Beautiful day for a flight... Air's much nicer up here than it is down there on the ground, wouldn't you say?"

Kal wasn't thinking about the air, at least not in that way. After pushing himself hard enough to level out beside the other stallion he was certainly gasping enough of it. He gave a short nod, hoping he would shortly have enough breath to give his companion a real response.

While waiting for the other stallion to catch his breath he pulled his wings against his body, dropping down for a moment only to spread them in time for an updraft to lift him higher. He loved the feeling of soaring... Of being so free that he needn't worry about anything else.
He glanced back over his shoulder, brow lofting slightly. "Hanging in there, kid?"

Kal forced another nod. "I'm fine," he called out quickly. There was no way he was going to say otherwise, not when he was being called a kid. He stubbornly pushed himself to keep following the other stallion, and felt the warm air lift him higher as he caught the same updraft. He almost smiled and forgot his situation, for a minute it was very much like he was just hanging in the sky.
His lightened heart settled back down as he flew out of the updraft, the clouds were still awfully far above them, and he had to struggle not to lose height.

He rolled onto his back, flying 'backwards' for a moment as he watched the other stallion fly along with him. "Y'know... You're not bad at this. A bit more practice and those wings of yours much actually get used to carrying you up this high. Would you like to even out a bit to something you're more comfortable with?"

"Not bad?" He almost squeaked, somehow managing to shoot the other stallion an incredulous glance as he fought to stay aloft. Still, he was overwhelmed with relief when given the chance to return to a less strenuous altitude. He nodded real quick. "Yes please!"
Without waiting for any confirmation he relaxed into a glide. After pushing himself he would have been thankful to just land and give his wings a rest, but the unexpected praise buoyed his determination. Maybe he could keep flying if he pushed himself enough.
