One would have thought a male like AearHwesta, with a history such as his, would have had difficulty falling asleep so simply. But his heart and mind were more at ease in this moment than Aear had been in quite some time, and his body too tired from pushing himself too far on the sea. It probably helped that Seer's scent was to him an intoxicating perfume: heady, making the smile come to his face as the sailor drifted to sleep with a wing over her curled body. Even with Valefor he had never felt anything quite like this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He awoke in the morning before dawn, aware of having slept more restfully than he had since Seer had grown to an adult. A smile spread sleepily across Aear's face, his eyes still closed as to savor the feeling. Feeling languid & content he nuzzled the warm body beside him, breathing in her scent like a fine wine. And it was, filling him with happiness and delight.
Then his body awoke. Heightened, insistent from being so near to the female all night long.
Great Neptune's beard, No! His eyes shot opened, wide & fearful. As soon as he felt it the ladies' kitsu clamped down, straining against himself. No. Not to Seer. And...
He had to leave. Had to pull himself together. He could not... could not do as his body clamored. Not Seer. Certainly not like this. No... not ever! He had raised her like a daughter! No matter how much he loved her!
He loved her. Closing his eyes AearHwesta snuggled the sleeping female while keeping himself in check. He could not leave. Not like he had. She had said she missed him. It had worried her to the point she had thought she had done something or he did not like her. Aear could not do that to her again.
Perhaps even more... he knew he could not be away from her that long again or even less time apart after last night. Her call would reach him like that of the sea -he would return to her anywhere now. He would not be able to deny her anything. Even if she were not on his ship... he would come.
Sighing he buried his nose in Seer's neck & drank in her scent. Intoxicating, but Aear accepted he was already lost -adrift on the sea of loving her. "I'll be back, Seer-love. Ne'er agin will I stay from ye as long as I did. Bu' I need te take a walk... I'll return. Soon as I'm able. I promise ye... "
Unwinding his body from around hers AearHwesta kissed the top of her head tenderly. Perhaps he showed more of his heart in that moment, lulled in the security that she slept and pulled by the overwhelming realization of how much he really did love her. Taking a blanket he gently tucked it in around her, so that she would not notice as soon the absence of his warmth.
Then he padded from the room, down the hallway, up the stairs to where he had to unfasten the storm safety upon the door. Aear opened it slowly, with an aching glance back to his cabin where hopefully Seer would continue to sleep at least until sunrise. Stepping out into the darkness he shut the door quietly behind him took a running leap from the deck and caught an early breeze. Lovingly he circled his ship in higher & higher arcs, remembering with every fiber of his being circling Seer the night before for sleep and aching with the sweetness of such a memory. His body urged him to return & with a primal, angry growl at himself the nautical angelic forcefully turned away. Defiantly he landed on the dock & set his paws to stride away from the ship docked there. Leaving the boards beneath his feet Aear trudged along the beach, not really seeing anything.
He lost all track of time, nearly all track of place. One would not know from his proud, sauntering walk how he felt inside unless they looked very closely. His heart & mind were on Seer, mentally calling up each fur & feather to his mind's eye. He closed his eyes, recalling her scent..."Why, hello." A sultry feminine voice called out softly through the darkness. The starlight on the water gave some light but Aear hardly needed it as he turned to the approaching kitsu, his head tilting curiously as she shifted to allow her scent to reach him. He caught more than that she was female with that sniff. Glancing around Aear realized he had walked farther than he had thought. There was no sign of the Hiril or her dock behind him. How long had he been walking? It must be nearly dawn now... why was the sky not brightening yet? "I was hoping I'd find you here." Aear raised a brow. "Ye have, Lass? Forgive me, but I don't believe we've met. How can ye be looking fer me? Or know who ye've found?" She was nearing. Yes, the scent was unmistakable. In the darkness her fur looked gray-black but the ladies' kitsu could see the white at the base of each fur. If a male where to move his paws through that fur it would shimmer like molten moonlight. And even more lovely beneath the blue tinged glow of his halo. This female's fur must darken to color as it grew while coming in white. His body quivered with the notion but the rest of him was not swayed beyond being superficially impressed. "You are the one called AearHwesta, right? The sailor?" "Aye, Lass. Tha'd be I." She was even closer, her eyes shining like sapphires. He wanted violet. "A girl friend told me of you. That you had the smell and sound of the sea upon you. I hoped that if I combed enough beaches I'd find you." "All right. Tha's sound. So ye found me. Bu' why, lovely creature?" The female laughed softly. She had a lovely alto tone to her. "Sweet honeyed words. I like the sound." Purring she rubbed her body against his, drawing out a soft groan from the angelic as his body grew eager. "Because it's said you're deft & gentle. That you see to a lady's needs before your own." Aear could not deny this, remaining silent even as the female continued to use her body against his. "That you bring out a girl's feminine passions while making her feel like a lady." Those sapphire eyes looked up at the angelic with expectant passion. "I want to know that." Aear's body rumbled. Perhaps his mind had not come out here looking for something like this, but his body told him not to knock fate. It was ready. His heart was not. "I don't know if I can, Lass. I've ne'er loved without loving 'afore and though I will forever love all females I've found it paled..." Guiltily AearHwesta looked away. The female's body rubbed meaningfully against his, eliciting another instinctual groan from the male. She smiled knowingly. "You can't say you don't want me." "Nay, I cannot, mysterious one." His voice cracked with need and she shivered with delight at that and his words themselves. She could see the truth in him, & enjoyed it. "Your love doesn't matter to me, sailor. All I want is a moment, to learn things about my body and lovemaking to hold forever and perhaps share with another should I find someone that excites me”. She nipped at his ear and grinned at the soft choked moan that followed. " I don't even care that you're clearly already hot for someone else. If you're half of what I've heard that will only intensify my experience." Her heated whisper into his ear was the last straw. Aear rounded on the female passionately and she gave before him as the experienced lover set to her body with deft precision. He felt her body respond and exhaled. "My heart won't be in it, lovely creature." He breathed heavily, reminding her. It felt unfair, but his body was making his head feel weak. His paws continued to touch her, and part of him wished he could better enjoy the way her fur turned to molten moonlight beneath them. She made a strangled noise as her sapphire eyes flicked open, passion bright within them. Aear's heart ached. It was not this lovely creature's body he wanted, and he felt he was being dishonest. To both of them. Perhaps he was. "Let her keep it." She said not unkindly, pulling him to her and kissing him passionately. "I only want one night and your body, with enough of your mind to make your performance what I've been told it can be. I don't even care if you pretend I'm her." Aear drew back, aghast, but this female held him to her. "I've ne'er thought abou' one lass while lovin' another. Ever." A chuckle as she pulled his eager body to hers. "You've never fully given your heart before. There's a first for everything, sailor. Even for you." She nibbled lightly at his ear & moaned happily as the ladies' kitsu went back to work on her body, making it sing. "I say it so you don't worry..." His gratitude for that he seemed to express in wordless ways then and the female lost all other thought but those of her body. But Aear did not. His thoughts kept drifting. To Seer. Here wishing it was her body he pleasured, there despising himself for the thought. And when it was over, it was her name his heart called out silently. Seer!! Inside, he was crying. The female panted, eyes rolled back and unfocused. " I see more clearly now how right you were... your body was with me to be sure. But your heart, was not." Numb, repleted, the sailor only nodded into her shoulder.
The blanket did its work well enough, but eventually Seer did notice Aear's absense. Be it the gradual cooling of the space around her, or that her brain registered that the scent of him she now breathed in was cold... or even just the lack of hearing him breathing, something told her that he wasn't there and her eyes flickered open.
Not there... but not gone. Not like before. Truth spoke to her that she'd never again be likely to face that wall of absense she'd faced of late in trying to find him. So she sat for a few moments more, not quite wanting to wake up. And yet... it was too quiet.
She squirmed out from under the blanket, fluffing up every fur and feather once she was out and then giving herself a thorough shake to settle everything back where it should be. She gave her wings a cursory inspection to make sure that her feathers weren't keeping themselves stubbornly displaced; it made things difficult when she tried to fly and her feathers weren't in order. Then she padded around the inside and later the outside of the ship to confirm her suspicion that Aear wasn't aboard. Peering up at the still cloud darkened sky, she grinned at it and gave a bow. If it hadn't come when it had, she probably wouldn't have found Aear. And for the moment it seemed content to hold off even the drizzling mist that usually stuck to the shore afterward while she went out to find him again.
She hopped over to the pier, slightly startled to catch Aear's scent on the ground. It was neither strong nor weak, which meant he'd been out for a while, but not more than probably a couple of hours. And the storm had even held off the rain this long? She was genuinely starting to think that perhaps someone had sent it intentionally just for her sake. It shut out the light of the sun that must by now have been rising, though... and made her look like a mottled shadow rather than the brightly colored creature she was in the exceedingly dim, gray light.
Whatever the cause and effect of the storm, Seer set out, following Aear's trail down along the beach. It traversed a rather large distance; she hadn't expected that he'd have wandered this far off. Whatever was wrong might not have been her fault... he'd told her it wasn't. But this led her to believe that it definitely wasn't any better after their talk. Oh Aear, what was going on?
She stepped slowly through some tall, almost reedy shoreline grass, the mess grown tall and thick enough that it came up over her head and made it difficult to see what was before her. But Aear's trail went this way... Then the stalks in front of her thinned, and she saw ahead of her in the psuedo-twilight Aear and... who? What? They were in a very... akward looking... position...
She was still masked from sight by the high grass and the lack of color in the cloud filtered half-light, and for that she was rather glad. The Truth of the situation flowered into her mind as vividly and abruptly as though someone had taken a bright red stamp pad and labeled the image. For a moment she was stunned, and then she silently turned and started back the way she came... and then veered abruptly to the side, toward an upstream area of the river that emptied into the sea in a lazy delta not too far from here. It meant she had to circle up and around... though at the moment her mind was feeling too numb to make sense of why that might be bad. Around... wind directions... it still wasn't adding up.
There. That spot, between the trees. There was a little pool there that was deep enough to swim in but out of the main current of the river. She dove in hurriedly, churning up silt and mud that didn't seem to want to settle and stuck to her fur. But the water was cold, and it brought feeling back to her mind. And in her mind's eye she found herself staring down at that space with the little dark recesses where the blip had come and gone, unnoticed.
Why...? Why had it hurt to see him... She knew, in her head, that he was a grown male and sure... she'd even known what it was that Valefor went over to see him on her "alone trips" for. Was it because he wasn't with Valefor? That it was some stranger? She didn't know how she knew it was a stranger... but that wasn't it either, was it? She'd actually been a little sad when Valefor went to see him the last few times... she thought it was because of the happy/pained look in her adoptive mother's eyes. But was that it? Or was it something that had to do with Seer and Seer alone that the young angelic was afraid to try and figure out? ...And why would Aear even do that with someone he'd just met? Gah...
The likes of us. It blared like a trumpet. Aear?... Like Igni?... to flirt and want those things with a girl he'd only just met and taken a fancy to? Oh God... She dunked her head under the water, hastily, as if trying to wash the realization away. All she suceeded in doing was getting the rest of her fur covered with the vengeful muck she'd churned up during her hurried entrance. After lifting her head again she realized that and clambered over to one side of the pool, laying half in and half out of the murky water with her brows furrowed. She hadn't put all the pieces together yet... but things about the painful nature of the relationship between Aear and Valefor and why Aear had reacted so badly to Igni were finally adding up.
And she had no idea how to feel about it.
His eyes were closed, just... laying there Seer. Seer. Neptune's beard... he could almost smell her...
Wait. He could smell her! That was Seer's scent on the wind! "Seer!" His voice choked on the name, his head lifting up to look where she must have been...
But she was gone. His russet eyes widened in pained horror. Davey Jones' ghost... she must have seen...
AearHwesta had never felt so utterly broken in his life. He started to rise...
And the female shifted beneath him. "Seer? Ah. The one who has your heart." His gaze fell on her, stunned. Not just at what she said, but that he had been about to leave without a second thought -or even a first thought- for the female. He had never done that. The ladies' kitsu was many things, but he had never left a lady after the loving was over. her sapphire eyes peered up at him through the haze of her contentment. "She did not know..." she sighed, shaking her head. "Go."
The angelic male looked torn. Clearly he wanted to "But..." He glanced guiltily down at his companion. "But what? You've never loved and left? I know. I said there's a first for everything. Go. I'm just glad we had this moment."
She kissed the pulse of his throat, nodding to herself when he did not respond. "Go." This time she shoved him and he trotted off slowly as if his paws were in mire. A quicksand of despair and not wanting to believe. "Thanks, Luv."
Slowly his pace quickened until he was running, following the scent that haunted him. The female watched until he disappeared the turned and rolled onto her side with an odd smile on her face. Another first for the sailor: He had never learned her name.
He followed Seer's trail like one possessed, and quite likely he was. Aear's thoughts were disjointed. Seer. Seer. Seer. Everything revolved around her. He had not meant for her to ever know... to know what he was like. Would she hate him? Right now he hated himself. Detested himself. Despised himself. He could just see her, amid the tall reed grasses, hurt in those beautiful violet eyes from the sight. A hurt he had brought about... oh if only!
AearHwesta tripped, face smacking into the ground forcefully. At some point while picturing Seer watching through the reeds he must have closed his eyes. He picked himself up, not bothering to dust himself off. Not that it mattered much, with how he looked from the morning's earlier activities. It did not take long to find her scent again. Aear was impressive when it came to the scents of females, and Seer's more than others was like a beacon to his nostrils.
AearHwesta stumbled between the two trees, his heart breaking anew at what he saw. How many times could his heart break in a twenty-four hour period? Seer... half in & half out of murky water. Seer... covered in muck. Seer... looking so sad & broken and confused. Seer... so beautiful...
"Seer..." His eyes were hallow almost, there was such an honest plea to them. As if the only thing keeping him together was her, and that plea. He staggered the distance between the trees and where she lay. "Seer... let me explain..."
Wince. It was not something he wanted to do. But know that she had seen what she had... it was the least he could do. Let her know the truth -all of it- before he lost her forever. Seer deserved the truth, more than anyone he had ever known.
Aear. He was here. He'd known... of course he'd known. He probably smelled her, he was good at that... even she'd noticed that by now. And in her mind's eye she stared dumbfounded as the little blip creature surfaced just long enough to give a crow of triumph that the sailor had chosen her over that stranger before disappearing again. What... why? It made her brows furrow further in confusion, along with a pang of disbelief at herself at the realization that she'd actually been wondering if she was really as important to Aear as he was to her... this, so soon after the reassurances when she'd been worried he left because of her... it hadn't helped to settle her feelings on the matter.
Her ears pinned themselves back as her eyes widened on hearing the broken tone of his voice, seeing that hollow look in his eyes... and suddenly her heart shattered into a million pieces. Oh no... he hurt... she did something... oh no...
It was the feeling in his words that she heard rather than what was said, and without even really thinking she scrabbled forward. Her own confused feelings suddenly seemed like the most unimportant things in the world. She wrapped her paws around his shoulders and started rubbing the side of his neck with her cheek. The smell of that other female all over him... she didn't like it. At all. But it wasn't important... "No! No... Don't cry! I don't want you to cry... I'm sorry! I'm sorry..." Not that she had any idea what she was apologizing for. She just knew that seeing Aear in such a state made her want to crawl under a rock and die because whether she did anything or not she knew the reason for it revolved around her. She didn't understand... what he'd been doing, what she was doing. Nothing made sense. But she couldn't stand the thought of Aear being so sad because of her.
Her silence echoed painfully within his heart. Aear waited for her to react... somehow. Anger. Tears. Cross words. Thrown mud. Flight. He would take it. He deserved it all. He'd follow her. To the ends of the world and back again.
A step towards Seer as she started to move. Then... she was there. Her paws around his shoulders, her cheek -great sea gods! her cheek!- rubbing his neck. And Seer -wonderful, wonderful Seer!- was asking him not to cry! For a moment he could not move, his eyes wide in disbelief. Then although it was exactly what she asked him not to do, tears started to form then silently stream from his eyes. Aear sat, pulling her towards him, his tears making clear trails where they fell upon Seer's muck covered fur. "Seer... Seer... Seer... Seer..." For a while all he could do was hold her, repeating her name in loving, grateful disbelief & wonder.
"Nay..." His voice was more than choked up, breaking even over that one word. Tenderly he began grooming her head, muck covered though it was. Aear could not care less. "Nay... I'm sorry. So very, very sorry."
Seer hung there on his shoulders feeling almost as though she was clinging to a thread for dear life. She could feel a slight shudder when he started crying and almost winced, cooing unintelligible comforting things to him much the way he had to her the day before.
"It was... too quiet..." she whispered. "You weren't there and it was too quiet..." She didn't really need to tell him what happened after that, did she? She turned to look back at the pool. "I couldn't think straight... wanted a dip... but ah..." She lifted up her wing and looked at it a bit mournfully. "I don't think that pool is a morning person..."
She didn't want to actually ask. She wasn't sure if she wanted to know... yet. She was confused and almost... scared by the things that kept flitting on the edge of her understanding. But if he needed to tell her... she'd listen all the same. As long as he felt better.
"I'm... okay... you're not gonna leave again... so... I'm okay..." And well... that was the basis behind how she'd been feeling lately, wasn't it? Even if she was confused about her painful emotional reaction to seeing him with that other female...
AearHwesta groomed her head, her ears. No spot moved from until it was fully clean. Meticulous in that as he was in the swabbing of the Hiril's deck and perhaps then some, for a few stray licks made sure the hairs were smooth again after the cleaning. He would see to her whole self this way should Seer permit him. He paused to whimper where he knew must have been when she spotted him and the unknown female. Then paused again as she said she was okay.
"Aye... Aye Lass. I'll ne'er leave ye again. Ne'er again." Somehow he would see to it. It would be a strain to be sure, but rather the agony of controlling himself forever to ever hurting Seer again. "As fer th' pool... I think it be tha' its nay a storm person, love. But ne'er ye mind about that. We'll get you clean again."
He set once more to her grooming with a loving, but sorrowful, determination. "Bu' nay I... I'll ne'er be clean. Ah Seer! I ne'er wanted ye te know!" And his salt teas continued to flow, oddly helping as he cleaned the muck from Seer's pelt, her colors dazzling him with their brilliance as they returned.
Seer let her paws drop to the ground, more because he needed to move to keep doing what he was doing than because she wanted to. At least, mucky though she was, it was clean much, just mud and maybe a few leaves from where she was laying on the bank.
When he finished speaking she leaned forward and rested her chin over his shoulder. "You're not a bad person..." She said it with a vehemence that could not be revoked. Maybe Aear had done some things that looking back on he wasn't proud of... but that by no means made him a bad person. "And you're still my best friend..."
He was stunned by Seer's vehemence. Closing his eyes Aear buried his face in the fur of hers he had just cleaned. If he had to clean it again so be it. "It's nay th' bad, love. I ne'er thought there'd be any wrong or harm o' th' way I was until..." But he was not ready to divulge the when & why. Aear would rather tell her details of his relationships than confess that.
He licked the spot back clean gently. "I am? Well... if ye want me... I'll always be yer best friend, Seer-lass."
The sailor spoke no more, focusing on grooming the younger female & keeping his mind straight. he missed not a millimeter, though he took great care in areas he well suspected to be erogenous zones to both not clean less because of his fears and yet not arose. Still, his touch was more dutiful than tender in those locations, as the ladies kitsu gave himself many things to concentrate upon at once.
Seer almost did and almost didn't feel weird about being groomed all over. It wasn't like he hadn't done it before... it had just been back before she grew up. And now...
Now she had been unintentionally forced to think about Aear in an entirely new way. A way that... honestly didn't repel her, though somehow she felt like it should. She didn't know that it was an attractive thing to her either... she simply felt too bizarre in general right now to really sort it out.
Eventually though, it was done, and she looked at him with her head slightly atilt. Then she gave him a big hug. "I'll always want you for a friend. Promise." She felt too strongly about him to ever want to turn him away. The thought just didn't make sense to her...
There was nothing the same grooming an adult as grooming a kit. Not by far, though the walkthrough was the same. AearHwesta nearly sighed aloud with both relief and disappointment when he was finished. The half afraid of what loving her could mean relieved nothing had gone awry. The half that wanted to love her wishing there was another excuse to groom her all over. All that loved her simply wanting Seer near.
What stopped his sigh short was the way Seer looked at him, her head to one side, as if pondering some great thing. Before the sailor could wonder what that might be he was closing his eyes to her embrace, returning it with singular desperation. Her words were another moment of joy and grief, reading into them that while he was her friend he would never be more. Nothing that Aear had not already decided for himself but it ached hearing it innocently tumble from Seer's beloved dark furred muzzle. Always her friend was more than he felt he deserved anyway. "An' I will always be near ye... I promise." His voice shook slightly, followed soon after by his body.
Seer tensed when Aear started shaking and cooed again like she had earlier. She didn't want him to cry again... She also groomed a little bit at a spot on his shoulder where she'd gotten him mucky earlier. "It'll be ok... everything usually turns out ok... maybe not like we thought, but... okay. Right?"
As if her cooing were a magical balm Aear's shaking stopped and the much older, far more experienced male melted gently where their bodies touched & sighed softly. When she groomed him however a rumbly purr sounded from him, low and deep and unplanned.
Her words... ah! Her words! A broken sound erupted oddly quiet from his throat. Somehow the low purr remained. He did not cry but their was confusion and grief in his voice. "Aye lass. Not at all how we thought. A year ago I would have laughed it was a joke had someone told me I'd be where I am today. I ne'er thought it would change. That I might change. That I'd e'er want te."
Aear was pulling her fiercely closer to him as if despite what they had said he was afraid on some primitive level that Seer would suddenly disappear. That... or he simply needed her physically near to find the strength to go on. "I ne'er saw a thing wrong with lovin' th' ladies as I do. I ne'er let a one think tha' I'd be tied down, or believe I was anythin' other than what I am, a free spirit. I'd my own rules for the game an' I stuck to them fair. ne'er a mother. ne'er a mate. ne'er a lass I knew a lad liked or I knew liked a particular lad. Ne'er if they couldn't understand I'm a rover... Tha' I may be back bu' I also may not. I love them, care for them. If a lass I've loved finds a mate... I'm more than glad for her 'cause I want her to be happy, see? I' doesn't have te be me. Tha's how I've always been, lass. How I always thought I'd be."
He sobbed almost as if catching his breath, drawing the air shakily inside himself as his paws tails & wings curled tighter around Seer. Not constricting, and the barest indication that she wanted to be released would see it so. "Then ye an' Valefor..." Aear shook his head. "... ye lasses turned my world upside down."
Seer felt her heart flutter strangely when Aear pulled her close this time. She didn't know what it was... but she found herself all the more reluctant to release him from the hug. Not that he was giving any indication of wanting to be released. Quite the opposite. She was happy to oblige and pet at his back just below his shoulder with a paw while he spoke.
She was quiet while she mulled it over, though she still gave no indication of wanting to pull away. It made a lot more sense now... Aear and Valefor. The pained glances Valefor had begun to give both Seer and the sailor as she grew. The strained but still honest affection between them both even now. Neither of them had intended things to go like this... and love had happened anyway. But they'd cut themselves off from anything more than friendship now... for certain. Valefor had come back from that trip to see him the other day, yes with Aear's scent on her, but it was a clean scent of just being around one another. And Seer had been so relieved...
"I guess... like Kitsyn says... "Change happens. You don't have to agree."" She giggled softly. "So I guess if your world turned wrong way up, you'll just have to get used to flying upside down?" It was silly... she was still trying to cheer him up. But it was also a bit of a metaphor. Things changed... you had to learn to cope or it broke you. That was just the way it was.
