Lol. Meat is more expensive to buy. I'm sure buying both tofu/soy products AND meat will break their wallet. Maybe resort to letting them buy the essencials, and you buy your own soy products.
There are alternatives instead of the tofu and soy products though. Or just buying packages of tofu rather than getting the "VEGGIE BURGERS" "TOFURKY" I think packed of tofu less than $2 a pack, and copairing that to a $8 box of veggie burgers you can get more out of it.

i would say look up vegetable recipes, since vegetables are so cheap, especially at farmers' markets.

Tofu is SO cheap though! I can get a block for less than $2. Come on. At target I recently saw veggie burgers for only $1.64!!!
I think everyone else has already said it, but beans and bare ingredients are all you need. Being vegetarian and vegan are cheap as hell if you avoid processed foods. You can make your own bean burgers as well, and TVP patties.

Try cooking with lentils, chickpeas and beans; you can get giant bags of them for cheap and they are high in iron. Try looking into some East Indian recipes (I can even provide some if you like), they are very high in iron, carbs and protein and they are inexpensive to make. If you have the time making your own bread is a great way of getting extra nutrience and it's really cheap.

I had a situation where I'd be staying at my girlfriend's house for dinner with her family, and her mum wasn't all too happy at first. She thought it'd be really expensive, and a hassle to prepare some vegan options. But we were like, um, orrr you could just cook some beans or rice and vegetables? Basic, nutritious, and cheap!

When I have a kitchen, I'll make a pot of black beans, another pot of brown rice, and those will last a few days. Each day I make a fresh salsa and steam some corn tortillas. Great eating for very cheap!

I'm really not a fan of mock meats; I prefer to make things with fresh vegetables. While this does mean a bit of planning on my part before going to the grocery store, I've found that it's well worth it. smile
I'm a big fan of coconut curry and rice, as well as ratatouille (fancy-sounding dish that's ridiculously easy to make)

[moon-pixie] well you don't have to have tofu and meat substitutes, just eat veggies and fruits and it'll be cheaper than eating meat ^^ I agree. I love vegetables now =)

Arashi Inu Will you find me a blue rose? I can't help you there, but I thought vegetarian foods were supposed to be cheaper then actual meat. Not premade things. Fake meat costs an awful lot. Maybe as much as or more than meat. But meat and cheeses do cost a lot on their own. If you cut them out, you're freeing up a lot of money. It's just too bad people are so conditioned to it. sweatdrop

All I can find are those puny 1lb bags for 99c each... Still, 50c for the main ingredient in a soup is surprisingly cheap. Add in some vinegar, water, celery, tomato/potato and you have your self a cheap vegan dinner, with protein and veggies.

[moon-pixie] well you don't have to have tofu and meat substitutes, just eat veggies and fruits and it'll be cheaper than eating meat ^^ ChaoticConsonance Fruits. Vegetables. Beans. Grains.Being vegetarian is way cheap, unless you buy a bunch of overprocessed substitutes. So don't; that s**t's bad for you anyway. This is an old thread but I hope I am not breaking rules by posting here. I think these 2 gaians said the main points. Very wise smile Substitutes are transition food. Mostly not healthiest. When we eat clean we are healthy, heavily processed and adding taste + packaging with long expiring dates are rather odd food for human beings... Easy for storage, not so easy to excrete out
