namida_no_chi That's quite possibly the most retarded thing that I've ever heard, to theorize that you can judge someone's intelligence based on what music they listen to. Or that listening to any kind of music will make you smarter. As far as I can tell you don't learn any more about the things you're taught in school (not music related) by listening to music. The day Dir en grey teaches me calculus, or somehow gives me the capability to grasp its concepts, I might change my tone a little. Sad... I don't even think you read it all. I wasn't saying that you get smarter by listening to a certain type of music. I was saying that many smart people enjoy that type of music. And calculus?? If you think that is the only thing important to learn, then you are horribly wrong. If you read the lyrics of some of Dir en Grey's music, and understand the deep meanings of them, you can learn something. And, I do think the article was quite interesting.

If you read the lyrics of some of Dir en Grey's music, and understand the deep meanings of them, you can learn something. You act like I've never read their lyrics, and I have. Aside from the fact that I've never learned anything useful from them, if you think Dir en grey lyrics are what you need to have some sort of intelligence, good luck with any kind of schooling. I'm sure you won't pass any tests by writing in Diru lyrics. But I guess you're right, you can learn something. That doesn't mean it will be something beneficial, but you'll learn something.
And, I do think the article was quite interesting. Also from my post at the end of the last page: namida_no_chi I was talking about the idea that someone could be more/less smart because of the music they listen to. neutral

I'm glad to see this topic spurred some interesting discussions. I do admit though that my title made it sound like it had to do with making people smarter, but I disclaimed that in the very first post. It was more of an attention grabber. The real motive behind instigating this discussion though was to disprove the stereotypes that someone's style/musical taste is a reflection of how intelligent they are. I'm not saying it MAKES you smarter, rather I found it interesting that more of our brightest minds prefer metal/rock over pop. I myself love metal/rock and electronica/dance equally as much, and I consider myself to be pretty intelligent. I don't feel weird at all though, attending one of the best colleges in the US (and in my opinion the best in the Midwest for sure) that prides itself on countless research developments, and I stroll around wearing band t-shirts, writsbands, chuck taylors, and have my headphones explosively loud so all can hear. XD I am however turning away from my intended path of research/chemistry/forensics to most likely work toward a communication degree in mass media. I'd like to work in the music scene.

namida_no_chi I was talking about the idea that someone could be more/less smart because of the music they listen to. And that is nowhere close to what the article and everyone else in the thread is talking about. Everyone else (including me) is trying to tell you that the article and the study concluded that already intelligent people tend to have a preference for metal and rock, not that listening to metal/rock will increase your intelligence. But thank you so much for your non-sequitur

namida_no_chi Ethereal Rapture namida_no_chi That's quite possibly the most retarded thing that I've ever heard, to theorize that you can judge someone's intelligence based on what music they listen to. The day Dir en grey teaches me calculus, or somehow gives me the capability to grasp its concepts, I might change my tone a little. It wasn't a theory to being able to judge someone's intelligence. It's a theory made to disprove a stereotype. They used metal as an example because metal/rock is the most popular genre, or so it says. It never said any type of music will make you smarter. Though, there is a theory that if you learn to play an instrument, you're increasing your IQ. But even that's not meant to give you subliminal messages on how to do Calculus. It gives you the ability to understand. xDI was talking about the idea that someone could be more/less smart because of the music they listen to. Exactly. So they contradicted the stereotype that all metalheads are idiots and gave us more insight. I think you were talking about the stereotype altogether, not the article. Sorry if I got you wrong. :3

Metal music and Dir en grey's music (which I've been listening for the past 6 years) in particular doesn't make me dumb nor intelligent, but it does inspire me to respect others and my own life better.
Even though the themes of their songs are mostly things that we don't wan't to be (from their lyrics translations of course), I could somehow translate their negative and dark imagery into something positive, and I'm sure all of you Diru fans who truly understood the meaning of music felt this too.
Metal music and Dir en grey's themes are usually of anger, vengeance, grief, sorrow and pain which accumulates from excessive bullying, so isn't this some kind of criticism of life in which we must reflect on?
If metalheads become more aggresive after listening to the music and start hurting people and breaking up stuff then they are not getting the essentials of music itself. They are just venting their emotions off to other people, causing this neverending circle of mistreatment.
Music is universal, whatever its genre, and it's supposed to amuse people, entertain them with the rythm and melodics, no matter whether it's throat cutting screams or falsetto choirs.
