Mzimu considered carefully what he was about to say before answering. "With my 'condition', I find it better to be on my own than surrounded by those who don't quite understand." Being a rather proud lion, Mzimu had never considered his blindness to be a disability, although almost everyone else he had encountered throughout his life did. Where he was concerned, it was him who was right and everyone else who was wrong, hence why he said that others don't quite understand.
He wondered if Jini would gather what his condition actually was, and if her attitude towards him would change if she did.

As far as she knew, Jini hadn't yet encountered any creature with any form of disability; physical, mental, emotional or otherwise. Until this sudden twist of events in their conversation, Mzimu's condition had been utterly lost to her. Suspicion, curiosity and other similar emotions bubbled in her chest and threatened to spill out of her mouth in the form of uninhibited questions. She wanted to know what he was talking about so vaguely, but had no real guesses as to what it could possibly be.
Instead of torturing herself by speculation, Jini decided that it would be easier to avoid beating around the bush. Even if it made the much older, much larger lion angry with her.
"What do you mean by condition, Mzimu?" She sounded more curious than anything else. There was a barely detectable edge of concern to her voice.

"Eh?" Mzimu seemed somewhat surprised that Jini couldn't tell that he was blind, despite the fact that his eyes clearly weren't normal. At least, that's what he had always assumed. He felt almost annoyed with himself now at having even brought it up, as for once in his life he may have been able to have a conversation with someone who didn't feel sorry for him.
It was too late to take it back now though. With a heavy sigh, he shifted his weight so that he was sat in a more comfortable position, before revealing the truth to the adolescent lioness. "I'm blind." He murmered finally, his tone of voice confirming the fact that he was not best pleased about having to tell Jini this, especially knowing that he wouldn't have had to if he would've just kept his mouth shut.

Now that he'd told her, certain pieces of their meeting fell into their proper places. She should have been able to guess that he couldn't see by the way he always seemed to follow her voice and stared not quite at her, with those haunting eyes. At first, Jini had just shrugged them off as some exotic physical characteristic attributed to lions that liked to live by the sea. She knew better now.
There were a couple of opportunities here. Her insides bubbled with naughty excitement. She could go with her first instinct and use Mzimu's disability to her advantage, or she could treat him like some kind of invalid and offer to go get him some food. Not that he looked like he needed it.
The former option sounded more promising. She was probably never going to see him again and, if he'd lived to be this old, it made sense to assume that he'd done a swell enough job surviving on his own. Was there really any harm in just a bit of fun?
"Well, then," she announced playfully and with a flick of her tail, "I ought to let you know that I'm probably the most beautiful lioness you've never seen."
Since he couldn't see, he'd naturally be inclined to believe her. It didn't occur to Jini that her statement might upset him. She meant it as a joke.

Mzimu rolled his eyes, apparently not amused by Jini's comment, whether she meant it seriously or not. Having been born blind, beauty was something he had never been able to experience. As a result, the very concept of beauty was somewhat difficult for him to understand. "What is it about you that is so beautiful?" He mused. "There are many different lionesses in the world, what is it that makes you more beautiful than the rest?" This wasn't so much a serious question, as it was a test to see how much the lioness thought of herself.

"I was only half serious," she informed him in a tone that had that old, annoying 'duh' quality (or lack there of) to it. Jini had never really paused to consider why she considered herself so beautiful. All of her sisters were beautiful so, she'd assumed that the association of their genes just ensured that she would be the same. The young lioness realized now that something like this wasn't the best thing to share with Mzimu, who simply refused to accept her claim as the truth and couldn't otherwise agree with her.
Was she really so beautiful, though? When she liked to roll around in the mud and be filthy in general. Her memory rushed back to the site of her reflection in the see, after a good bath. Jini supposed that she actually didn't look too bad when she was clean.
"Anyways, I just am."

"If you say so." Mzimu slowly struggled to his feet. "Where I'm concerned, personality is everything. I don't have the luxury of rating others based on their looks, so I can only rate them based on their personality." He grinned. "For an insolent youth, you're not too bad. If you want others to tell you that you're beautiful though, you'll have to go elsewhere." Saying that, the old lion turned and started making his way back to where he had originally been lay, having decided that his conversation with Jini had gone as far as it could go.
