- ArehCraR - Actually, Ramadan is the month we have to fast and Syawal is the month of celebration. Anyway, if I have to wait for Syawal, it will have to be next year because we just celebrated Syawal on October. Hmmmm. . .pondering pondering How about a celebration of it being Monday? A holiday for ALL AROUND THE WORLD ! ! ! Monday ='s NEW BOOK DAY, WOOHOOOOOOOO*singing*"Oh on tuesday it was sunny, on wednesday there was rain. Thursday is for rabbits, hoppin on the plains! On friday we wear silly hats, not caring how we look Saturday & Sunday are to relax our minds, CAUSE MONDAY WE GET BOOKS! Oh Monday, is a great holiday Oh Monday, what can we say? Oh Monday, our brains get to play Oh Monday, all the brainy kids say Forget the menorah's & mistletoe It's monday morning and we all know THE BOOKS AWAIT, TO THE STORE LETS GO ! ! !"

lol very nice song!!!!! I know the film could have been so much more powerful if they'd put in details of how serious the cutting was and how many children it happened to but it didn't The shack scence would have been the best place for it and it just didn't happen. Quote: I hate they ending too. It's like not a mysterious ending, more like abrupt ending. Referring to what Robahn wrote, there's still a long way to go before the book ends right? Why didn't they end it the proper way? Exactly the ending from the book would have left it on a cliff hanger yes but it would have made the film a million times better so more ppl would watch it and it would have been a greater success so a 2nd film would have most probably happened but now who knows if they'll bother after al the bad reviews i've read it isn't looking good. Do you think they should and will make the 2nd or not? I hope they do because i want to see how they go about it and see if it will be better than NL (Golden Compass) but i don't think they should if they are going to butcher the story like NL (Golden Compass) Yeah there is lots more to go and the ending was the best bit of the book which they missed out. It is like if a surgeon is doing an amputation to 2 legs because of gangrene to stop it spreading but while through surgery thought o no wait the one may be just as good so only amputated the one but then the person died weeks later because of the disease. They thought we'll cut off the film here so that its not as much of a cliff hanger in case a 2nd film isn't done but then after people watching it over the 1st 2 weeks the bad reviews have 'killed' the film in turn because book lovers won't want to watch it because it is a horrible adaptation and normal ppl won't just because of the crap ending ALTHOUGH my freind hasn't read the books (i bought her for xmas though haha) thought the film was good so... lol but i told her she has no opinion until she has read the books haha!

Wow... nice song! You made them yourself? Cool! @tulips: I really really hope they make the second one. And the third. And so on. How many books are there, anyway? 3 right? But if they make the second one, then there must be some parts from book 1, golden compass, right? So, what's the title going to be? Golden Knife? (The 2nd book is subtle knife right?)

they'll probably have an easier time makeing a second movie... it's the shortest of tha three books so they can probably squeeze in a little from the third cuz there are just a few major things that happen... that is if they have enough money to MAKE a second or third... they are good books but alot of religious fanatics are boycotting it, so suffice to say it probably won't do well enough at the box office to even pay off the first movie. the whole idea makes me sad... I liked how they did the movie, religious belief aside. sad

Yeah, they should be more open-minded. It's not that the movie can make someone leave their religion or something, right? It's just fiction.

most of the people that I know that have a problem with it have never even READ the books... they are just all upset because the Pullman said some stuff against the church... they bascially leave it to their Pastors to decide what their opinion should be. sad

How judgmental! That means they don't even know what the book's talking about!

I'm a Christian (well. . .sort of, by theology if not dogma) and I've read these books no problem, it's just entertainment to me Funny thing is, I kinda disagree with what the author himself has said ^^ as the main point of these books, oh well to each their own

Yeah if they make the second one they will have room to put in the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 3rd. It's a fiction story so i don't understand why people have a problem with it and what Pullman said was a view and it's his personal opinion. Yeah there are 3 books but he is in the process of writing The Book of Dust but if they make it into a film who knows. He has also written Lyra's Oxford but that won't be in any film form it's just a little bit more about an adventure of Lyra's. Quote: Subtle Spyglass? Amber Knife? Spy Gold Subtly while Knifing Amber? Very nice titles you should send off in a letter and see what they say haha! They'll just leave it as Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass though. I was disapointed with it being called The Golden Compass Northern Lights suits it much more in my view.

I think it's because Northern Lights are named as Golden Compass in U.S. So, they followed that.

- ArehCraR - I think it's because Northern Lights are named as Golden Compass in U.S. So, they followed that. Really? I'd never heard that one, I always called em either the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis, huh But as for the change, ya that happens a lot. Heck, the origional title for another was "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" in England / Eurpoe. But they decided nobody would understand that reference (the twits) so changed it to "Sorcerer's" in America

I'm from America, and that's the first time I've heard The Golden Compass referred to as Northern Lights. I think the former is a bit better because it matches the next two titles a lot better, IMHO.
Here in Japan, they just call it Lyra's Compass. Each country to its own.
I haven't seen the movie, but I really want to! I loved the books so much. Although I do understand why the Catholic church have so many problems with it - no one likes being portrayed as a villain. Was the church as villainous in the movie as it was in the books? If the church had a hard time with the first book (and the first book didn't really have anything too terrible), I wonder what they're going to do about the murderer-priest that turns up in book three...
