ok... let me try something serious... Personally i'm completely on Raito's side. For someone with the power to have anything and decide something as big as other people's life, he used that power for a suprisingly good purpose. Look at the other users of death note: Misa killed criminals to meet kira, Mikami killed to show loyalty, and Higuichi killed for money and status. Raito is the only ont who used this power for the good of man-kind, to create an Utopia. True, he had a god complex, but his intensions are good. err... that sounded like an qrguement... forget it... sweatdrop

I have to agree with the Naruto thing... I'm not even a fan of the series and I've felt the repercussions of the reverberating insanity of their fandom O.o;; It comes from amv surfing O.o;; There's so much crap out there...
But even Death Note is pretty bad... O.o;; (I may get shot for this but) LXRaito makes me want to cry. I mean, they want to kill/incarcerate the other for the sake of their pride, so they must be in love, right? I mean, can you hear the discussion now? "Well, if we're going to be technical, Raito is the one who killed L so that makes him the seme, right?"

I see the whole LxLight thing as being more of a joke than something to take seriously... because think about it, they did go around handcuffed to each other 24/7... which meant that they had to go to the bathroom together, change clothing together, eat together, sleep together, go on dates with Misa together... that's just a bit too good to pass on making jokes out of.

yeah... when two sexy, well in L's case cute geniuses who are obsessed with each other are locked together 24/7, it's kind of hard to not let your imagination run wild

Woe to the man who is different who tries to break down all the barriers Oh, it's basically a requisite for a large fandom for the fangirls to take the two hot male leads who are rivals, take their relationship out of context to the point of UST, and then ship them together, proclaiming how hot it is. Well, I enjoy LxRaitoxL (or whatever...they fight for dominance in everything anyways, so logically they'd probably switch or something) just because when done well, it's just so interesting. Look at the other users of death note: Misa killed criminals to meet kira, Mikami killed to show loyalty, and Higuichi killed for money and status. True, he had a god complex, but his intensions are good. err... that sounded like an qrguement... forget it... sweatdrop Woe to the man who is different who tries to break down all the barriers Sorry for the double post, but it's just to keep my posts organized. ^^; Besides, I just love a good Death Note discussion-it's a bit off-topic though, but I'll reply.
Personally, I think Raito didn't enter this with good intentions at all. Sure, it's a good ideology, but that's pretty different-and besides, with the absolute power of the Death Note, it ended up corrupting him. I think he's doing this just to prove his own existence, and the fact that he's willing to take even innocent lives just for self-acknowledgement that his life is special is pretty selfish to me. Before ever meeting the Death Note, Raito's basically as perfect as a human being could be without being completely obnoxious-great looks, immense intellect, and a desire for justice. And being so praised for his accomplishments and reaching, probably going beyond the standards and expectations set for him must have given him a seriously big ego. However, it doesn't detract from his "perfection"-as we can see in his innocent phase, he's simply more magnanimous and dignified as opposed to being arrogant in his Kira mode. But being a concious young man, Raito sees all the bad things that happen to the world that never seems to get any better, and at the beginning of "Death Note," we see him as a discouraged idealist, bored with the meaningless of life and disheartened at how "rotten" the world is. But, going back to the issue of his pride, due to that pride, he refuses to accept his own life as "rotten" and meaningless. So when the Death Note came around, it was the perfect opportunity. With his strong faith in justice, he thought that he could use it on people the world would be better without, and yes, I agree with creating a utopia-but he would be the one calling the shots. He thought his life's purpose would be doing this deed. Heck, he even thought Ryuk choose him (in chapter 1 he asks, "But why did you choose me?") and keeps on constantly reassuring himself that he's the only one who can do it because he-who doesn't accept that his life is as meaningless as other lives-is above other humans and therefore above their systems of morality. As they say, "absolute power corrupts absolutely", and because he had reached the conclusion that he was above morality, Raito wanted to play god. What better way to prove your own existence by controlling other existences, by becoming something omnipotent and powerful-like a god. And that's why Raito tried to kill all who opposed and disagreed with Kira. He knows they'll at least try and catch him to stop him. And if he is caught, he knows what will happen. Whether he is killed or kept in solitary confinement or whatever, his changes will be undone (after all, he's the one that said "he was the only one who can do it") and the world would go back to its rotten state again, as if Kira didn't exist at all. Complete failure. And that's really what happened, if you look at the epilogue. The world crime rate increases once again, and the only people who still acknowledged Kira were those crazy-yet secular-Kira worshippers. Not to mention his pride fueled his idealogy, which was relatively good at the start, but ended up being dangerous, because he took it as the supreme right and moral ideology. If there are people who disagree with that and go against them, therefore being immoral, what would he do with them? He can't just leave them-they could always being acting just like he is-because like I said above, he'd be caught and end his existential crusade, so he just kills them. Well, I'm at the beginning again, because all this to me...sounds pretty selfish. Woe to the man who tries to stretch the imagination of man He shall be mocked; he shall be scourged by the blinkered guardians of morality {SONATA}

Psh, clearly you've never been 'flamed' by a Narutard. xD
I'll admit I fangirl just as much as the next girl but part of why I like DN is because of the plot and the values and themes within it. When I meet someone in real life who will actually properly debate or discuss it, I won't leave them alone for hours and vice versa. xD (I spent ages talking about the whole capital punishment and killing of criminals with an aquaintance of mine, who's pretty smart but stuck up, who just said they approved of my school bag, which is a Death Note bag. xD) It's just so rare to find a fan of it who isn't simply 'OMGLSQUEE'. However, that's how a lot of people are in forums. Even I don't necessarily flaunt the fact that I'm into the philosophy behind DN because it simply isn't brought up often in topics. I mean, scanning the threads here there isn't exactly much room for intellectual discussion since half of it is about licensing of who's better than who and so on. This kind of stuff is expected when an anime is as popular as Death Note is, and it's likely to get steadily worse once the anime is properly introduced to the West. :/
Yaoi and fan pairings are to be expected though. (Handcuffs? Mello being androgynous-looking and wearing leather pants? How could you NOT? xD) It just makes me cringe when people get their little fantasies which don't even fit the characters, or they screech that the anime is so awesome and that they're on L's or Light's side when they don't actually pay attention to the characters' values in the slightest. That pisses me off.

Can I vote the slash fandom as the worst? I have nothing against canon guyxguy myself, assuming it's done well, but such a large proportion of the fandom is fangirls who pair obviously straight male characters with each other (or enemies, or siblings, etc.) and squee about how hot it is. Tell them you disagree, and it's not pretty. The difference between the slash fandom and other fandoms is that a disproportional amount of the fangirls are at this level.
Then again, does it have to be a fandom for a specific series? I could list a few really bad fandoms for that.
I do have to agree that, considering the series itself, Death Note has a pretty awful fandom. It's the type of series that could easily open up much deeper discussion, but we spend that time talking about how cute Character X and Character Y look together. I have seen a fair amount of DN discussion that I've enjoyed, though, so I probably wouldn't consider it the worst.
I never found L all that cute myself. I thought he was an interesting character, and he's my favorite of the series, but I could definitely point out better-looking people in the series. If I was going by looks, I'd probably vote Light or Misa as the best-looking characters.

If I was going by looks, I'd probably vote Light or Misa as the best-looking characters. I agree. Light and Mikami are by far the most attractive males, and Misa (possibly Takada) the most attractive females in the series. I mean, the whole point of Light and Misa is that they're supposed to come across as attractive. Light's a charming and good looking teenager, Misa's a professional model. People see L as adorable because of his habits and what not, but in real life, if they saw someone who was as skinny, sleep deprived and down right weird as he was, they'd probably be disturbed or appauled. At the very least they wouldn't be all 'AWW, HOW ADORABLE! Look at the cute little skinny guy with his eating disorders and disfiguring eyebags!' It's just because he's anime and because the live-action L is an attractive guy wearing eyeliner that so many people squeeflail for him. :/ Don't get me wrong, I love L too (though not as much as Light.) but, yeah.

I'd probably vote Naomi from WAAAAAAAAY back in volume 2 as better-looking than Takada. That's probably at least slightly biased, though, since I'm not that fond of Takada, but I thought Naomi was interesting and didn't deserve to be killed like that. I end up choosing favorites by personality anyway. Making the Kiras more attractive works well since it adds this feel of ANYONE can be corrupted by the Death Note, and anyone could become evil. Likewise, a lot of L's odd quirks would make society write him off as some sort of bum who needs to get a job or something. Usually, it seems to be the other way around, at least when it comes to the hero. I have a question, though. If we get off-topic, but it's more in-depth like the poster was asking for, is it all right? wink

The fandom will get much worse when DN is shown on television. xD It's pretty obvious, I know, but it's true. I can see more fangirls than intellectuals watching Adult Swim (considering that I've heard DN will be on adult swim).

Pssh, are you kidding? Every anime series has fans that rant about their favorite couple/pairing/charcter. But I really haven't met that many annoying DN fangirls. Like come on, Narutards have the worst rep.

I agree that the fandom is pretty bad, but that comes with popularity. And I agree with everyone else that Narutards and slash fanatics can be a hundred times worst.
When this Guild was young, and Death Note wasn't wildly known, the fangirling was cute. It was between a small number of people who got to know each other well, and thus we knew that we were just being silly goofs.
But now that the Guild is the size it is, the fangirling has gone from cute to annoying. It's been done to death a hundred times, and instead of looking like silly goofs, we end up looking like depraved 13 year olds.
I tried to weed out some of the more annoying ones by making the "How to join" rules a bit stricter, but there are always some who sneak by...

Death Note has been too ... enjoyable for too many people ... being on the Connichi German convention was sometimes sooo stupid because of seeing so many bad Ls ... cause most cosplayer think only wearing a white pullover and wearing a jeans make them being L without the hair and everything ...
And of course we all think we have got fantastic characters ... I always enjoy running around as Raito next to me good other cosplayers cosplaying Misa Mello Matt Near ... fortunatelly we never discuss who is the best character ... also Mello is sometimes blaeming me ... yeah our mello is nice in this case ^^°
For myself it was sometimes stupid when people ran to me and wanted to cuddle me only because of cosplaying Raito or Mikami ... think it is often better with less fangirlys especially when they are telling you ... you need kissing your L ... I needn't kissing my L (don't know if our L thinks being Raitos L) because of stupid fangirlies ... no away with them ...

Actually, I disagree with the first post in about a million different ways. Have you ever SEEN a horde of Naruto fangirls? What about Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, or any of the other half-baked and ridiculously popular anime/mangas? I'm not saying we're not bad, but we're CERTAINLY not the worst fandom.
Regardless of how serious and thought-provoking the anime/manga is, there are going to be fangirls. Look at Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, both have strong moral themes that are constantly overlooked for the glomp-able characters. I think Death Note cosplay is higher than most (maybe because the characters look remotely human, other than Ryuk?) But all in all, there have been worse fandoms.
