I really enjoyed trying out FFXII's battle system because it's a nice, new change from turnbased, but really, if I had to choose my favourite kind of battle system, it would be turn-based. I've got the same reasons as all the other turn-based supportive people in this thread, they all said it for me.

call me old-fashioned, but i've always preferred the original turn-based combat. it actually gave you time to come up w/ a strategy to fight, and that's what i always thought FF was about: strategy. plus, i grew up playing the turn-based games, so that somewhat influences my opinion, as well...

Final Fantasy XII is a great game but I really don't like the battle system. I don't know why but it just irritates me something awful. I like the turn based system in X and the ATB system in the other ones, I just don't like the new battle system but this is entirely my opinion; I'm not going to get in a big argument about what system is better.

I thought the battle system in FF12 was okay. It took me a lot of time to get use to it though. Personally, I like the regular turn-based combat. It was really frustrating for me to heal a character quickly before the Boss kills them first. And then if they do die, I have to waste time to revive them and stuff. With the turn-based combat it was a lot easier for me so I liked it better. But change is good sometimes ^^

I hate random battles, but I though XII's system was a bit slow.

turnn based systems are easier to handle as u cud think about your moves before you did them. i hated how on XII once u killed the monsters they would only reappear if u left the place.

That's an easy one, if they were going to switch over to FFXII's system, they should change a few things. I didn't like how dumb your allies can be, no matter how well you set up their gambles. I hated watching my partners charge into their deaths when I told them to stay back ><. I don't like not directly controlling my allies, especially when there help is so crucial

I'm with you Moondragon. Turn-based seems to me to involve more strategy. In XII, I didn't even really have to think about battle. It made me sad. crying

I couldn't decide before but I think I can now.
Yes, I've grown used to the turn-based combat and I've enjoyed the games for that and other reasons. When I first heard that FFXII would have a different battle system I was a little worried, I admit. Now that I have played it though, I've begun thinking that maybe they should stick to this formula.
When I was playing FFIV years ago the one thing that frustrated me to a point where I thought I would need new teeth was all the battles I was getting into when all I wanted to do was get to the screen for whatever reason. Every 5 steps, BANG! Battle time. Another 5 steps, BANG! Battle time. Now I know this is pretty much what it's like for FF games (minus a few of them) but the annoyance had more to do with the fact that the constant screen change ruined the flow of the game for me, story line wise. Thankfully they fixed that all to frequent random battles but I won't lie, sometimes I still get annoyed random encounters.
Now to FFXII. Not once did I complain about getting into a fight. If I wasn't in the mood to battle or had to make a hasty escape their wouldn't be any screen changes, no break of flow.
But when I did choose to fight (Which actually was the case 99% of the time) it felt more then just pressing direction buttons followed by the ok button. I could place my characters in strategic positions, position the camera in a more appropriate place etc.
So my vote goes to the battle system in FFXII. I'm glad their using the same battle system for FFXIII.
