"No... it's okay. I can understand that." She lowered her fan a little bit more, so her whole face was visible, finally. "It's like how I'll arrange a vase of flowers before drawing it, adding what would make it look even better."

She had stopped stammering, but her voice was still nervous, light, as she walked around the low wall towards the tree. When she walked, her steps were rather short, and her feet turned in just a tiny bit. When she got to the tree, she rested a hand on it, looking at it a moment, before turning and smiling slightly at Abacus.

"Like... this...?"

Rather than walk around the wall to follow, Abacus pressed his hands onto the top of it and swung himself over. "Like however you want to, actually," He replied, smiling before kneeling down with his camera up.

Click!

A momentary flash accompanied the camera before Abacus stood and scooted off to one side, adjusting his camera slightly before taking another.

Click!

"Sometimes one of the pictures doesn't turn out," He explained, lowering his camera as if anticipating the question. "I prefer to take as many pictures as I can, just in case one doesn't turn out. If I'm lucky, I'll have more than one really good picture." He stopped, then offered another of his bows. "Thank you, Biwa, for letting me take your picture."

Biwa blinked, startled at the flashes, fan coming up slightly. It resulted in a rather demure and shy pose, with a small smile as she tried to stay smiling for the camera.

"O-oh. Yes, that makes sense..." She nodded. In response to his bow, she bowed back, low, clicking her fan shut for the moment, then opening it back up as she straightened.

"And- you're welcome..."

Abacus nodded, eying his camera. "I believe by tomorrow I'll have the rest of this film used up -- tomorrow at the latest, that is. I might use it all up by tonight or even in within an hour depending."

"Ah, nono -- thank you for letting me take your picture. I feel as though I forced you into that, and for that I apologize."

"You take that many pictures...?" She was nowhere close to filling up her 'sketchbook,' after all, which was what she was comparing his photography to.

She moved a little closer, fan rising to its usual position. "Maybe you forced me," she commented, blinking. "But I don't mind. It was for art, right?"

"Sometimes I go through a roll a day, but most of the time a roll of film lasts me four days." Abacus shrugged. "Some pictures don't turn out in the developing process, and others don't turn out how I expect them to. I suppose I just like taking pictures, really."

Abacus paused, tilting his head to one side and considering her question. "In a way, yes." He admitted, "But to me... it's like keeping records of what happened where, as if..." He fell silent, considering his word choice, "It's like... Memory. Little pictures of memory."

"Memory...?" She reached out tentatively, and touched one finger to the camera. "You use this to remember? Why?" She blinked up at him with curious eyes. Why would you need to record your memory in pictures? Memory was in thoughts. Pictures were to capture moments, yes, but not of your memory - a moment in nature, of the world.

That's what she thought, anyway. She drew to capture moments in time, not for her own memory, but for their preservation as moments.

Now it was Abacus' turn to be curious. "It's not as if I have a hard time remembering anything," he began, looking away from her to study the tree she was drawing earlier. "It's to help remember. There's... something about the pictures I take that bring me back to that exact moment. It's... a bit hard to explain, but if the flowers around here go missing," he gestured to the plants, then looked back to her, "Ask me what colors they were, ask me how they smelled, and I would be able to tell you."

"Of course," he added with a grin, "If it's flower names you'd want, you'd have to settle with 'that yellow flower with five petals and a taller cylinder sticking out of it,' or 'those orange flowers with black spots on them.'"

Then... they weren't so different! They both sought to capture a moment, not for themselves specifically, but just to preserve it. He smiled, laughing quietly.

"I understand!" She looked back at the tree, as well, then over at her sketchbook, then to Abacus once more. "I think... that's why I draw, too. To capture a moment forever, so that there is something of the tree, or flower, or waterfall, that remains forever. It's like..." She paused, suddenly nervous from having spoken so much. "It's like... I can look back and see a part of its spirit."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 03, 2007 3:35 pm

"The... spirit?" He echoed, looking thoughtful. "I've never thought of it that way... I only took pictures to help me remember the moment. I didn't think that there might be more to it than that." He shook his head as if to clear his thoughts, then grinned. "Do you have any more pictures, out of curiosity?"

"Everything has a spirit, especially in nature," Biwa murmured, blinking.

"And... more pictures...? A few," Biwa replied, smiling behind her fan. She padded over to the low half-wall and her sketchbook, bringing it back to Abacus. "It's supposed to be my journal, I think. But..."

She held out the cloth-bound book to him. Besides that page, there were many other quick ink drawings of different sorts of plants. She never seemed to draw people. Each drawing was made with very sparse, yet very graceful lines, curving in varying thickness to create illusions of form. It was an odd style of drawing, to be sure.

Abacus grinned and took the "journal," flipping through it carefully. "A journal is what you make of it, really. Mine... Mine is more of a photo album. Or I plan it to be, I have film that still needs to be developed."

He quietly mulled over the thought of spirits. He never really thought much about them before... There was that one class, though. Abacus made a mental note to stop by the library sometime in order to investigate further.

"So this could actually be a journal?" she asked, blinking. She'd just assumed she was doing it wrong - and accepted it as such. She couldn't keep from drawing, just as she couldn't keep from singing, sometimes dancing. It was much easier to draw than to write boring facts down.

He carefully closed it and nodded, grinning. "It can be anything, actually. It could be a sketch-journal, sketch book, notebook, diary... A book is a book until something in it defines it, really. For mine, for instance... Rather then write down 'I went for a walk and met an artist,' I can just post a picture of this place and yourself, and leave it at that."

She took her journal back from him, holding it to her chest. The action lowered her fan, as she cradled the book with both arms. "Until something else defines it..." she murmured, thoughtfully. It was a pretty phrase. It had music in it, of a sort. She hummed a little at the thought, then smiled.

"I think I understand."
