My intrest in learning branched from living with my Japanese grandmother in CA when I was young, during which I was fluent apparently, but when we moved out I forgot most of it. Then we moved to Okinawa and I learned a little bit of conversational Okianawan, which is slightly different from Japanese. Being there I discovered it's extremely hard to talk to my grandma in English over the phone. Then we moved again and I forgot a lot of it. When I discovered anime it fueled my interest even more and now my plan is to move to Japan and work as civilian personnel for the military out there as a special education teacher, but I'll be living off base so I definetly need to learn it now. ^^

Although I became interested initially through anime like many others, I've always loved learning foreign languages. I don't mind dubbing so much depending on the series, but sometimes you just get lazy reading subtitles and want to know what half your music tracks is saying without running to a translation website every time. I also have a friend at college who is a foreign exchange student from Tokyo.

I have studied Japanese because of the music. It sounds beautiful when sung as opposed to when it is just spoken. Anyway, I also studied it because I knew I was gonna go over there for an extended period and it helped greatly.
Now that I am back home I study Japanese to keep my senses sharp and to communicate with friends and family I left there. The Podcasts help greatly!! My major goals with Japanese are 1) to complete each level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). I have 1/4 of that done. 2)work in a job that require spoken and written Japanese skills 3) to become fluent enough to where I can easily explain my thinking without becoming frustrated. Number 3 is the major one because when I was in Japan my first few months I could get my ideas across easily. When I take my family there next time I want to be much more advanced than my intial visits. 3nodding

When I was little my dad and I would sit down every night and he would teach me random things in spanish. It would be simple things like hello how are you? and goodbye. That really got me into wanting to learn new languages. In 6th grade we had to take a class that taught french spanish and italian so you can pick one you wanna take for real in 7th grade but I moved. I ended up taking spanish anyways. So after taking 5 yrs of spanish I got really bored so I took my last year of highschool spanish and french. Well that was a mistake. (I dont like french too much not my kind of language) So when I got to college I wanted to take something (even though it wasnt a requirement) I decided why not take Japanese. So my 1st semester I moved into a dorm that is for language majors minors exchange students and people who just like to speak many languages. The 1st floor was was german 2nd was Japanese 3rd was french and italian and 4th was spanish and chinese although the japanese students ruled the entire house. lol we were overflowing. We had to take a 2 hour class and a regular language class with the University. The 2 hour class was just a class the sit and speak japanese and learn about the culture and random stuff for 2 hours its was a lot of fun. my second semester I took a beginner japanese class and it was fun hehe. I have loved learning new languages and about new cultures since I was little and now I am going to school for travel. biggrin Ok im done sweatdrop

I started Japanese through school because so many people said it was one of the hardest languages to learn, and I wanted a challenge. Also, my mom took Japanese in college, so there was some family influence there. 3nodding

Well my interest in the language came about due to my general love of learning languages. I often go through phases where I pick a language and intensely try to learn it. But with Japanese it was slightly different. I also fell in love with the music and found that just by singing the songs, I was already picking up quite a vocabulary. From there I became obsessed with everything Japan and it hasn't lessened over the years. redface

I've always been interested in Asain cultures, especially Japanese, and became a big anime and manga fan at a young age. I'm interested in doing translation work when I become older and more skilled. Also, the school I now go to gives me an opportunity to go on an exchange to Japan. <3

Manga is cheaper imported, non-edited, and it's faster supply. What if it never gets translated? When you can read Japanese, there's like a whole new world of manga awaiting you. Onward!

Yes, it all started with anime.... The reason i'm learning is so i can speak to my friends(which r also learning) in Japanase and so if and when i go to Japan, i would, for the most part, understand them. Also, so i can understand what's being said in all my j-music; i can only pick out bits and peices, but that's all.

Many reasons. Well... I used to learn random words all the time from anime... Then I moved and had no computer or anything to do, so... I took up hiragana and katakana... In no time it became an obsession... And it brought me so close to other languages! O.o I love languages more then anything else in the world... x3 * heart sigh heart *
