misakyra A translation isn't really changing the name of the show, so I'm fine with it. But taking a perfectly good translation and changing it to something completely different just doesn't make sense. The same for changing the names of the characters. So the pronounciations may be a little difficult at first. So what? Kids can listen, can't they? Sorry if I'm ranting here, but it seems like some companies seem to think that American children wouldn't be able to handle it if they found out their favorite TV shows were coming from another country. A great example of this is when Kanji signs are actually blurred. Not painted over or translated, but blurred, as if they were something bad that children shouldn't be seeing. What's the point? Are there any kids that are really so sensitive that they would freak out if they saw foreign writing? scream I agree 100%.

if the new title is just teh japanese title translated i dont mind. when they just make up their own title or change a perfectly good translation thats bad. but the idel thing to do would leave the origional japanese and put int a little translation

I don't really mind. I prefer when the title is a close translation to the original, but sometimes it can't be helped. Like Detective Conan = Case Closed... wherever there are copyright problems. XP

I don't think it's a good idea in general. A direct translation isn't so bad, but all-out changes spread confusion. Sometimes there are issues with something else already having the same or a similar name, and the company is forced to make a change. However, I still think it's important to have the original title somewhere on the cover (whether it be in kana or romanized) so that people discovering information about a series by its original name, then finding out it's available in local stores don't go out shopping for it only to buy something else because a different name is present.

Masquanade Like Fubara and Fruits Basket, I know people who call it both. You mean "Furuba". Fruits Basket was actually the original name of the series. "Furuba" was a nickname started by fans which the creator actually objected to!

I don't like it for both of the reasons you listed. I geuss it's okay if they just translate it for american cable, but they shouldn't abuse the power and make it idiotic.

it depends on the series. in general i'm not too much of a fan of name changes, and i prefer leaving the series title in it's original japanese language. however, if there is a good enough reason for a name change, and the new name isn't totally rediculous, i'd probably be cool with it. then again, i probably wouldn't have too much of an opinion unless it was a series i was a fan of. (like "hollywood mewmew" gonk uck, do you guys remember that? terrible. gonk gonk crying )

Some anime names can't really be translated. Like "Inuyasha." But if they change the title, it should be a direct translation. Like, "Midori no Hibi" to "Midori Days." Changing the title completely like "Tokyo Mew Mew" to "Mew Mew Power" is just stupid.

I despise it. Akuma de Sourou means something in Japanese. In English, it comes off as trite, cliched. I'll wait and see what Bandai does with Mai HiME. Giving children words they can't understand sometimes encourages them to look them up. Or it sometimes leads to feelings of superiority of knowing a word their classmates don't, even when they don't know the definition.
