Actor. For one thing it's a hulluva lot easier to say "I'm an actor." and two cuz thats generally what I think of myself as. I act, therefore I am an actor. Capisce?

Thicket Random Fact Time: Did you know that there were a lot more "-ess" words? Such as doctress for women doctors, poetess for women poets, etc... Glad that times have changed...and that people have found their common sense. sweatdrop

I tend to think that a women who acts on stage is an "actor" and a women in a movie is an "actress". Of course, that still goes along the lines of prima donnas and beauty over talent most of the time...

well it never really bothered me what they called me; it's how they say it.
ex.
"Oh, you're an actress?"(curiously) "Oh, you're an actress?"(snidely)

Personally? I like Performer, because not only do I act, I sing, and dance if I can get away with. I also want to write for the stage. But singer-actor-dancer-playwright takes to long to say and write out, so I just say Performer. Performer and Playwright. 3nodding

Well, I don't really mind what I'm called, actor or actress, as long as people mean it in the right way. Like, I like actor because it means a person who acts, but realy, actress means a female actor. But if someone says it like, Hollywood actress, prissy, pretty, dainty, self-obsessed actress, like I HAVE to be called an actress and not and actor, that I don't like. But you can use either around me becuase they are both right. I have some friends who call themselves only actresses, that's ok, but if you want to be specifically proper that is up to you. Actor or actress, whatever, as long as it is not use as a derogatory term.

Wow, this is old, old.
I've decided that I prefer "actor", considering all the little blonde ingenues at my school refer to themselves as "actresses".
More specifically, "I'm going to be an act-tress!"

I've never really encountered a specific connotation with either actor or actress. I'm shocked so many people have. I wouldn't care either way. Of course, if they were specifically making a snide comment or added meaning about either actor or actress, I would mind. But that hasn't happened yet. I generally tend to say actor, because it's shorter =) But sometimes in reference specifically to a female performer, in making it clear that they are female for whatever reason, it's simply easier to just actress, as opposed to "female performer." I don't feel it's degrading or sexist at all, in it's common usage.

I prefer to ba called an actor. I find gender-specific terms to be useless.

I don't understand how it would be disrespectful! Thats like saying if someone calls me miss they are being disrespectful. Personally i don't give a s**t which of the two i am called as long as i am called one of them. As for what ui refer to myself as i go back and forth.

I don't really mind which other people call me, but when refering to myself, I say actor. I mean, in all other areas of theatre it isn't different depending on your gender. It's still 'Stage Manager' not 'Stage Manageress.' So why should there be a difference in other areas?

I pretty much use the two interchangeably for myself, but I think I like "actor" better as well, but not because of anything wrong with "actress". I just prefer not having to say "actors and actresses", but just "actors". In other words, it's just my laziness shining through.
