Luke's breath was coming in ragged gasps, chest burning, bare feet slapping the paved ground as he ran desperately trying to get away, away from the pain, away from his father, away from everything. His face and collarbone burned from the multitude of tiny cuts and the alcohol that had gotten into him. Rhynll clung to the front of his shirt and Luke held him there, keeping him close for comfort. This was all they could do, comfort each other as best they were able.

Finally coming to the Thames River, he paused, leaning his forehead against a building, chest heaving as he tried to recover his breath. Slowly, his breathing returned to normal and he straightened looking over his shoulder. There was no one after him, both his and his ferret daemon told him that. Not that he expected there to be; he may have ran from his father but that didn't mean the man would actually take the effort to look for him.

Running a hand through his ear-length golden hair, Luke sighed, considering his options. He could go back home, but there was no way he would do that, not with the prospect of facing his father again. He could try and make it on his own, maybe find a job or something... but who would want to hire him? He was a skinny fifteen year old, relatively short for his age, not to mention the cuts and bruises, recent and old. Most would probably consider him too scrawny, maybe even a troublemaker, and dismiss him. Not like it was his fault. Then.... he didn't know. He shouldn't be out; he, like everyone else, knew of the human and demon murders and was just as terrified of them as the next person. So was Rhynll he knew.

"We should go back," Luke said softly to his daemon. "He's only going to get angrier the longer we're out...."

"Go in through the window then," Rhynll replied.

Luke nodded and headed back the way he came but didn't get very far before he started coughing. "Not again," he muttered, as the slight pain in his chest magnified and seemed to spread like fire, causing him to cough more violently. Rhynll could do little to help, but his small tongue was licking Luke's face, trying to help, making small noises of shared pain. After a moment, the coughing eased, though his chest still ached. He wiped the blood spots off his hand onto his pants leg and continued on his way.

Sanrir was looking out from the tree house that he built with his dad as the others talked suddenly he turned around and started talking.
"I think we need more members, i mean come on 7 15 year olds? what are we really gonna do?"
The others turned to him and alex said
"But we ARE the 7 deadly sins so i mean..."
"I know i know! But does the name matter as much as what we DO?" There was a murmur of general consent.
"Then i hereby call this meeting over. Remember to try and recruit new members if they want to join bring them here."
Sanrir jumped out of the tree when everybody else had gone and climbed on to the roof of his house and looked up at the stars.
"Deso?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think were are the good guys? Or the bad guys?"
He drew his sword as he said this and looked at it pondering the question he had just posed to his daemon.
"Of course we are the good guys! What would make you think-"
"I killed someone with this sword. "
"I know i watched you do it."
"How am i good then? I thought killing people was evil......."
"No in the right circumstances its ok"
"You really think so?"
"of course i do"
Sanrir was silent for a few minutes then said
"Thanks you."
"Glad to help.
Sanrir jumped down from the roof and started walking down the streets of the town ready to execute his plan.

Dani closed the door behind her, walking out into the rapidly descending dark, Arba trotting along behind her. She locked the door and turned, walking down the alley. Inside the house, her brother was in the living room with a small wooden horse on wheels, expected to amuse himself until thei father finished up the last orders of day in the bakery that made up the front half of their house. He'd be angry that she'd left Sam alone again, but Dani really didn't care. She never talked to him anyway, unless she was getting yelled at.

Arba seemed to know what she was thinking, and pressed his lean body gently against her leg. They reached the fence at the back of the alley, and Atra said, "We were a family before mom died. Before Sam came." She climbed on a few old boxes and jumped over the fence, feeling a few seconds of depression and pain before Arba followed her.

"You can't keep living in the past, Dani. You need to let it go. He was two, what was he supposed to do?"

Dani ignored him and kept walking. She always had to take the back aley when she left the house, else her dad would catch her and drag her back inside. Sometimes literally. After a few times of being caught, she'd decided it was better to travel in the alley, though more dangerous.

Arba was silent as he walked alongside his human. It was troublesome to be so closely connected sometimes, and quite frankly, she could be a pain, but he knew why. She was still mourning her mother, even after three years. His thought pattern was interrupted as he caught dark patches on the side of the street. He sniffed them, and caught the scent of blood.

Dani didn't realize that Arba was running ahead of her until she felt a crippling pain in her chest. Coughing, she ran to catch up with him. This happened often. One of them would find something interesting and wander off, temporarily forgetting the other until their connection grew too strained. After a few seconds, she caught up to her Daemon, only because he'd slowed to a trot, and asked, "What was that for?"

He looked up at her and then back ahead of him, still smelling the air in front of them. "There's someone hurt out here. Bleeding. I think its a boy. We're getting closer to him," Arba explained, as though it explained everything. Which it did.

Dani sighed and kept walking, looking at Arba every so often to make sure he didn't run off again. Soon, she saw the sillhouette of a small-looking boy a few hundred meters down the road.

Neither Luke nor Rhynll ever spoke of his coughing fits, neither of them knew what caused them nor what could fix it so they just lived with it.

Walking quickly down the grimy dark streets, Luke wasn't paying much attention to what was around him, focusing on getting home and avoiding more coughing which threatened. Rhynll, though, was more alert.

"Wait," he said softly. Luke paused in his step, immediately alert. "Someone's nearby and coming this way. Hide!"

Luke faded into the shadows without a word. He wasn't skilled in stealth but he hid anyway, afraid that the one approaching would be the serial killer.

Dani frowned as the boy ducked out of sight. He sure didn't look like he was dying from extreme blood loss. Then again, she hadn't even seen the blood, so she didn't know how much there was, and Arba's nose had never led them astray. Still...

"Are you sure it was human blood? Not a pidgeon or something?"

Arba looked up at her with a look that questioned her intelligence before trotting a little faster. Shaking her head, Dani began to jog to keep up. Really, did he have to be so difficult? Just as she thought this, Arba stopped short in front of her and she ran into him.

The pair of them rolled onto the ground, Dani ending up of her back and an irritated Arba on top of her.

"Really, could you be anymore clumsy? You could have broken my ribs."

Dani snorted and poked her Daemon in the side, trying to get him to move. He didn't. Evidently, Arba found lying on her chest quite comfortable, as opposed to suffocating. She snorted in annoyance.

"Maybe next time you should tell me before you decide to stop suddenly. Why did you, anyway?"

Arba blinked and looked to the side, as though just remembering something. Dani followed his gaze and saw a boy. Well, he looked like a teenager, but he was kinda small...A manboy, then. She blushed, realizing how foolish she and Arba must seem, and jabbed him in the ribs again. He was either ignoring her, or had sustained mental injuries during their fall. Sighing in annoyance, Dani flashed the manboy the best smile she could manage under the circumstances, which turned out quite scary, and said,

"Hi. I'm Dani. Who are you?"

Jane sat on the rooftops of London, watching the city as the sun set behind the tallest buildings. Her eyes though were not on the setting sun, but on the house she had chosen for tonight.
"Shade, you said that this house had an entrance from the Thames?"
"I did." replied the deamon.
Jane was silent for awhile, watching the Thames now. The Thames, and the two in an allyway nearby.
"And no one else knows of this entrance?"
"Thats what I can gather. Why do you ask?"
"Because, it seems that the ally we were going to use has two people in it." She growled. If they didn't move by nightfall, she client would not get that painting he had his eyes on. She hated to lose a custermer, as she called them, because some snot-noesed brats tried to play gang members.
"Calm down. If you go in as is you'll have us caught again." Shade caustioned.
"You're right. Let's go."
They jumped to the next roof lower down, then jumped to the ground. Landing, Jane pulled out a parcel from her bag. She andShade then walked out, looking to the rest of the people around her like an errand boy on his last delivery.

Luke watched the two with quickly widening eyes, but not so much at fear but at surprise this time. He rose a hand to his mouth but it wasn't quite big enough to hide the grin and the giggles that escaped at the amusing sight the pair caused.

When she spoke to him directly though, instead of to her daemon, Luke hesitated, suddenly flighty once more. He bit his lip, revealing his slightly pink stained teeth from earlier. "Luke," he said softly, not really sure if he should be trusting this girl with his name. But then she had told him hers so....

His eyes quickly flicked down the alley to where another appeared and he tried to sink further into the shadows, once more afraid of the serial killer that was loose. He held Rhynll close to his chest for comfort, the way a child might hug a teddy bear but this teddy bear loved being held that way.

Dani suppressed the urge to roll her eyes at the manboy, Luke. He was laughing at them. Like he'd never done anything foolish. Before she had a chance to retort, however, he once again fell into the shadows. Frowning, she followed the direction of his gaze. Another person was coming down the alley.

Poking Arba a little harder this time, she whispered, "Get up. There's someone else coming."

Her daemon snorted and rose gracefully to his feet, walking over to sit by the boy. He then procceeded to stare at Dani as though he had been waiting an hour for her to join him.

Thinking thoughts that would get her slapped by her father if ever she said them outloud, Dani got up with a little less poise than her companion and sidled over to where the others were.

To the boy, she asked, "Who do you think it is?"

Walter stood across from his old house for the first time in three years, feeling nauseous. This should have been ridiculously easy; he was a grown man and was in excellent shape. Nothing would go wrong. It would be ugly, but that was inevitable. Unconsciously, he stretched out his hand and stroked the silky fur behind his daemon’s ears, just as he had done since he was small. Assuming, of course, that she had possessed ears at the time.

“There is another possibility you’re ignoring,” commented Alirialie in her velvety voice.

“Oh? And what is that?” he asked, turning to look down into the familiar, golden eyes.

“Come back later. You’re obviously not ready to do this.”

“Aliri,” he began calmly, “You’re still scared of pit bulls, even though you could probably rip one apart. I think we both know why that is. If you’re going to be cowardly, at least be honest about it.”

Alirialie’s tail lashed. “Fine,” she snapped, “But you’re still not ready to go back in there.”

“Maybe I’m not,” he agreed, his voice soft, “And maybe you’re not, but unfortunately our time has run out. We can’t leave them in this city any longer, not the way things stand now.”

Alirialie hesitated, and then sighed. “Alright, let’s get this over with.”

Aqua walked the streets of london, her flame red bird sitting on her shoulder. she was garbed in black silk, even in the coldness. she got some odd looks, but she held herself differently, and suddenly everybody seemed to ignore her. she hadn't vanished, and it wasn't a spell, she held herself with just the right amount of modesty that no-one would think to look at her twice.

((yeah, i nicked the spell from serafina in the second book. i'm re-reading the series))

Jane jogged into the ally and stopped. Shade trotted in after. "Shouldn't you be home? With a killer loose I wouldn't stay out any longer than needed," she said, masking her voice to sound like the errand boy she was pretending to be. She then saw the boy sitting in the shadows, wide eyed and scared. Those eyes...Where have I seen them?
Shade nudged her legs, "We should be going. If the package is late the master would be very upset." He too acting on his part. The two of them perfectly playing their roles.

He just had to breathe. His father was just another man, after all; his time away had helped him to see that. He was someone to be pitied rather than feared.

Walter lifted his hand and knocked on the weathered wooden door, and winced involuntarily as a loud, slurred voice sounded from behind it. “Luke, damn it, that had better be you, boy!” The door flew open. A tall, dark haired man leaned on the table just inside, looking for the world as though he would tip over. His red rimmed, dangerous eyes glared up at Walter, then widened in confusion.

“Hello, Father,” said Walter, almost serenely.

The big man stared at him for a few more seconds, his eyes examining his son’s face without a hint of recognition. Finally something flickered, and the eyes narrowed meanly. “Walter?” he growled, a touch uncertainly.

Walter nodded. “I’ve come for Luke and Mother. It’s too dangerous in the city right now, and I’m getting them out.” He spoke slowly and soothingly, like he would to a child, but was careful to keep any condescension out of his voice. That would make things even nastier than they were already going to be.

He suddenly became aware of a low growl, which had been growing on the edge of his awareness for some time, and glanced down at the floor. Alirialie was having a staring contest with a large, white pit bull terrier. The dog’s hackles were up and its lips were drawn back. Alirialie glared right back, her ears flat on her skull.

“You think so, huh?” Walter brought his eyes back up to search his father’s, and was surprised by the dark humor in them. “Well, as you may have heard, Luke’s out at the moment. You obviously haven’t heard that your mother is as well.”

A cold chill ran down Walter’s spine. “Where is my Mother?” he asked, his voice still, as always, composed.

His father leaned in close. His smell, the stale sent of sweat and whiskey, made Walter flinch back. “Exactly where she deserves to be,” he whispered, his eyes glittering with malice as much as alcohol.

Walter stepped back, feeling oddly numb. He didn’t want to know what that meant. Without another word, he turned and disappeared into the night.

Alirialie hesitated for a split second, then, lightning fast, reached out and cuffed the pit bull on the side of its broad head. “Oh, I’ve wanted to do that for so long,” she crowed as she followed her other half like a liquid shadow.

Luke ran a hand through his hair when it was clear that the other person, a rather feminine looking boy, had seen him and pointed out a very good point.

"Um... yeah," he said, glancing to Dani, to the newcomer, then away again. "I better be getting back. I'm in enough trouble as it is. Nice to meet you," he said quickly do Dani before turning and jogging off down the street back towards his home.

He was taking it easy, not running really, just walking quickly since he didn't want to agrivate his lungs and start a coughing fit again, and he stayed to the shadows, nervous especially after that other boy had just reminded him of the danger.

As he approached he saw someone leaving his house and frowned. They were walking too straight to be his father, not that his father ever left the house, he just sent Luke to get him more alcohol and that would normally be his only excuse. Unsure of himself he waited there in the shadows, watching.
