The woman flexed for Tyson, grinning broadly. It was hard not to feel like Wonder Woman with his belief in her. Alex chuckled quietly to herself as Lillian chided him, reaching out to pet Marmaduke and making a soothing noise. Her eyes shifted over to Lillian and she nodded once, moving her hands from the dog to reach out for Tyson. "C'mere kiddo, this thing is a little unruly on the wheels." She managed to bundle him into her arms and give him a few good tickles before releasing him, adding, "Watch out for Duke, he's none too fond of your new family member."
Waiting for the children to move, she carefully stripped away the rest of the box, leaving just the gargoyle and the slat it was perched on. Kicking the dolly hard, she managed to slide in undernearth the support, wrapping her fingers around the stone creature's neck to heft him back. It took some work, but she got the thing moving with a little grunt, carefully walking backwards out the door so as not to dump the thing unceremoniously on the walkway.
A quick mental check of the traps in the area, and Alex had moved the gargoyle in front of the house, between one of the windows and the doorway. "Good as any place for a Guardian, don'tcha think?" she asked the stone monster cheerfully.

Lillian and Tyson exchanged a look over Alex's comment. How was a statue, which wasn't even a living thing, become a part of their family? Many of the items that had been sent from their parents were now squirreled away somewhere in the house; there they would never be bothered again. Surely the gargoyle would have the same fate. Although instead of dust and cobwebs from the attic, it would be pained with moss and erosion from the elements outside.
They kept their uncertainty to themselves though and followed Alex out the door with no complaints and met her out on the porch. Behind them came Marmaduke, the big dog's growls violent and enraged, clearly he did not not share Alex's joy for the invader. Unlike the many treasures that had been sent to the dog's domain, this one certainly held something about it that set it off from the other pieces.
Until the terribly heavy object was resting safely on theground, Lillian kept a tight grip on her anxious litle brother's shoulder. Her side was the safest place to keep the curious child. It wasn't that Alex wouldn't keep him safe by the statue, but there was still a risk of the thing falling over and crushing the child. When it was settled, as she expected, the tyke bolted from her grasp and stood before the gargoyle.
Tyson appeared intimidated for a moment or so when he was standing directly under the statue. It wasn't in the crate anymore, and with no shavings to hide it's frightening features, the gargoyle was pretty scarey looking now. "So, Alex, do you really think he'll come to life? He won't be mean right? He'd protect us!" If the thing was to be "living" at their home now, clearly he would have to get over any fear that otherwise would've grown to a terrifying intensity. As if to convince himself that he was comfortable with the monster, Tyson smiled up at the gargoyle's stern and scowling face. If there was the chance of the gargoyle coming to life in the middle of the night; it was a pretty smart idea on Tyson's part to get friendly with the being now to avoid any trouble with it later.

"Mmhmm," Alex agreed with Tyson, tracing the intricate engravings on the gargoyle's back and wings with her rough hands, "They're guardians. There's nothing to be afraid of. He might look scary, but he wouldn't be very intimidating if he was as cute as a bunny, would he?" She reached down to ruffle Tyson's hair playfully, smiling at him in an almost matronly fashion. "Don't worry kiddo, your parents wouldn't send you something dangerous." She paused, thinking. "Well, maybe. And even if they did, I wouldn't bring it if I thought it would be a problem." The woman grinned at the boy, patting the gargoyle as affectionately as she had mused his hair, "Think of a name for him. Everything needs a name."
She brushed her hands off on her pants, glancing over to Lillian. After a silent moment of consideration, she inquired, "Anything else you need help with before I get on my way? I'll take the box back with me and dump it on the way home."

Tyson’s eyes followed his older friend’s hand as they trailed along the gargoyle’s body. The distraction he reveled in for a moment or so was short lived by the tyke. Even if he tried to look at something else, for example, Alex’s hand, the gargoyle’s wing, and heck he even tried to focus on the porch. It was no use, for his eyes continued to come back to the gargoyle’s frightening face. The fierce scowl it held amongst its roar, and the narrowed eyes that looked so angered, along with just the overall look made the monster unbearable to avoid not staring at.
Once again, over the course of just two minutes, Tyson had to convince himself once more that he had to be friendly and not fear the beast that was to the side of him.
“Ya know, I guess you’re right! I mean, he’ll scare away anyone that looks at him…no offense Mr. Gargoyle.” Tyson managed to add as his hair was tousled. Afterwards, when his parents were brought up the squirt snickered behind a cupped hand. “Yep! Ma and Pop do send us weird things, but I think they don’t really see how odd it is. You know how much they love kooky treasures.”
Lillian laughed at her little brother’s comment, it was entirely true. Their parent’s did have a weird taste in the objects they’d send over from their latest expeditions. “A name, huh? Well…I think we could look in some of the old books we have in the library. There’s bound to be a name in there somewhere that would fit a gargoyle. By the next time you come by, I promise we’ll have a name our charming little guardian.”
The miss was just about to reply to Alex when another bark from Marmaduke sent her back into the house, tugging the big lug by the collar behind her. She returned to the two back on the porch after the dog had been put away in the house where they couldn’t hear his howls of dissatisfactory.
“Sorry Alex.” Lillian breathed as she worked to regain her breath after the long haul with Duke. “Thank you, but nah. We’re fine, and I don’t want to hold you up anymore than we have.”
Of course the dismissal didn’t go without some moans and groans from Tyson. The child had hunkered down next to the gargoyle, briefly sending quick glances in its direction while trying to listen fully to Alex and Lil speak. “Aww! But Alex! You can always stay!” He whined with an added zest of melodramatics.

The woman offered a sideways smile at the two, watching Lillian drag the massive dog back inside. "Animals are always more sensitive than we are. S'why we rely on them to see and hear what we can't." Alex gave Ty a playful wink - probably not at all helping the poor boy deal with the idea of a gargoyle - before turning her innocent smile onto the young girl at her return. "It's fine, he's just doing his job," she reassured Lillian, fishing her keys out of her pocket.
"He~ey." Alex rested an elbow on the broad neck of the gargoyle, peering over the stone creature at Tyson. "Zoe and I have to run some errands, but I'll come back in a few days if you promise to be good." She lifted her eyebrows as if she was serious, but really, when was she ever terribly serious? Sadly, she didn't get to come by as much as she wanted to, what with work demands and all, but she really needed to make more of an effort. She didn't like the two being out here all by themselves.
She tapped the gargoyle's head, indicating the decision was final (with that mischevious intent), pushing herself back onto her feet and setting about gathering the dolly and remains of the box. "I'll bring some dinner and goodies to make up for it, 'kay?"

Tyson pouted at the news. “But you just got here! Why don’t you stay and play a game or two? It’d be fun!”
His attempts to keep Alex with them ended quickly as a strong hand fell upon his shoulder. “Tyson.” Lillian was staring down at him with strict eyes. “Alex has other things to do. Let her go. She’ll be back when she can.” The teenager then looked back to Alex and managed a tired smile. “It was good to see you, Alex. Thanks for helping us out, I’ll find a way to pay you back.”
“Remember! You have to come back and visit soon!” Tyson voiced before Lillian could stop him. He didn’t care if it was rude; he wanted to see more of their friend! Alex was cool, she was fun, and she told stories about their parents. She brought them treats, made them dinner, and was just a good person to lean on. “Oh!” Oops, he had almost forgotten in his pleading so before Alex could leave them Tyson added in, “Don’t forget to bring some of those candies and Zoe next time! I miss him too!”

"It's a date," she assured Tyson, smiling to Lillian with understanding. It was funny, seeing the two together; it reminded her of herself and her brother, except she was very much like Tyson and he more like Lillian. "I can't forget, Zoe is gonna be mad enough that I didn't bring him along. I'll have to bake him a cake to make up for it," the woman joked good naturedly, finally mounting the remains of the box onto the dolly and securing them with a bungie cable.
Alex walked over to Lil and gave her a good, tight hug, murmuring, "No payments. Seeing you two smile is all the riches in the world." She released the young woman with a whimsical smile before turning and scooping Tyson into an equally tight embrace, opting to spin him as well and planting a sweet kiss on his forehead. "And you take care of Lil, okay? Don't give her too much of a hard time, but make sure she has a little fun. I'll be back soon, you have my word kiddo." She put him down and ruffled his hair, straightening and returning to her work items.
"You two take care. Call me if you need anything. And good luck with your new friend." With an enigmatic smile, Alex carted her belongings back to her truck.
