This one is semi-hard: Somebody else in the Akatsuki did physical damage to themself so they could fight him fairly later on.
hilight this for the anwser: It is Itachi! He had previously forced Deidara to join akatsuki. So Deidara melded that thingy onto his left eye to see through his genjutsu.
