Known Background: Riou and his step sister were orphans taken in by the former hero of the city-states, Genkaku. Genkaku trained the two and then later the son of the Atredies family. Riou and his best friend Jowy enlisted in the local militia, The Unicorn Brigade, only to be swept up into a series of events after the brigade's slaughter. Riou was then involved with the mercenary fraction led by Flik and Victor. Later he became the Leader of the Liberation army and was involved with The Dunan Unification War. After the movement, Riou declined the position of leadership and took off to parts unknown with his sister and his best friend, the former king of Highland.
He owns only a half of the True Rune of Beginnings, the Bright Shield Rune. His best friend Joey owns the other half the Black Sword Rune. It is uncertain if these two runes are the same brothers depicted in legends that were said to have started the world of Suikoden.
