He smiled at the thought of meeting a goddess one day, already the fanciful imagery of what she might look like daning through his head. But he was quickly brought back to earth again.

"Displease her? What would make her unhappy?" he asked, still lacking all the knowledge of his birth pride.

Shetani looked down at his flame-scorched paws, the ones her took so much pride in. They were afterall marked with the symbol of their creed. But what if this was a bad thing? Maybe...Finar-si had already decided he wasn't good enough? Maybe it was a burn of hatred for him?

This was nonsense, she'd never met him! How could she hate him without ever meeting him...still, Shetani quite suddenly folded one paw over the other, as though contemplating the worth of his flames.

The huntress settled comfortably in the sand; it seemed she was going to be here awhile. Not that she minded, of course! Teaching was most certainly time well spent.

"We must honor her always, and the gift of her blood which she gave to us. To do otherwise would displease her. It is not a difficult thing, to honor Finar-si. Just remember to have pride in yourself, in your blood, in our heritage and traditions. Remember that you are Firekin, descended from and blessed by a goddess, and so you have no equals save your pride."

"We are pure and strong, nothing like rogues or the slaves we keep. They are below us, Shetani - never forget that. The king's own son was fool enough to do so, and for it he was banished. He dishonored his pride, and no doubt Finar-si cursed him for his betrayal."

As much as he greatly respected his parents, and always listened to their teachings, Aza just seemed to command a certain type of instant respect. Like the headmistress that you never wanted to cross paths with. As such, Shetani listened quite raptly.

He seemed to nod and smile with every 'requirement' that Aza reeled off, as if mentally ticking a list. He was proud, he was strong, he was confident. He knew the Firekin to be strongest of all, despite what they had come through...even BECAUSE of what they had come through and defeated. The Plague...it could have wiped them all out, but it didn't. They survived.

"The king's son? What happened?" he asked eagerly, almost like it was a story and he was waiting for the next installment.

"He was weak," she answered in a voice tinged with disappointment, "Weak in heart and mind. He allowed himself to be swayed and deceived by a slave, dared to claim love for her!" The disappointment in her voice turned to disgust. "No one save another Firekin is worthy of the love of one of the Blood; no one save another Firekin is worthy to bear or sire the cubs of one."

"He would have diluted our blood, soiled the gift of Fina-si. His was a grave sin, and it is for the best that he's gone, never to return." Azachamorel herself had not witnessed the drama unfold, as she'd been out on a hunt, but ignorance of such an event would be practically impossible.

Aza may not have realised it, but her words were having a very deep and lasting effect on the impressionable Shetani. Just from her tone of voice, he knew he'd never want his kith and kin to ever talk about him that way. He'd die of the shame. No, he'd make his family and his pride proud. A determined gleam even appeared in his eyes.

"My family doesn't have any slaves, at least not yet. Do you have any?"

It was true, Aza didn't realize just how deep a root her words were, although she certainly hoped. If this pride was to have a future, they had to hold true and fast to their traditions and weed out all weaknesses. Weaknesses like that yellow cub.

The huntress shook her head in answer. "No, I do not, though one day I may capture one for myself. There was a time when it wasn't just trespassers we took as slaves, but also the children of our enemies. Perhaps I will go on a hunt, when I have healed."

Shetani's eyes positively lit up again. He sprang onto his feet eagerly and his tail swished about.

"A hunt? If I'm bigger by then, can I go with you?" he asked, rather impetuously considering he barely knew Aza.

Azachamorel grinned, both thrilled and amused by his excitement. It was very, very promising. The parents of Shetani and his siblings had done well indeed.

"As long as you catch your own slave," she answered, still grinning.

"Oh yes, of course of course!" he seemed to chime. "Although I'd probably have to share it with my siblings or my mum and dad for a while."

Shetani was beginning to talk about a slave as being some kind of toy. It registered somewhere in his head that a slave was still something that was alive, but somehow unworthy of being alive.

"That may be," she nodded. "Perhaps you could encourage your siblings to find their own someday, though?"

"Unless we make quite an expedition of it with more than you and me!" And that could get tricky! She'd certainly need another adult or two.

"I wonder what I could use a slave for?" he began to muse with a smile. "I think I'd wanna still do my own hunting...gotta keep strong and fast..."

Shetani hopped down from his tree-perch and paced about around Aza, bouncing and pouncing as he did so.

Aza's approval shone clear once again. "No, no use at all in becoming fat and lazy. I imagine it would come in very handy for dragging your kills, though."

Now that was something she'd be happy to never do again! Dragging a carcass through the sand was the only part of hunting she didn't much like. It was so unwieldy and slow! Yes, if she got a slave, that was exactly what she'd use it for.

"Oh yes! Thats a great idea! I'll be a big strong hunter, a slave could bring everything back for me," he beamed.

Acquiring a slave was sounding more and more attractive by the day, but then something occured to him - he was still a young cub. Althought he hated to admit it, he was small at this age. He had to look up to all the adults. What about a slave?

"Oh...would a slave still obey me if they were bigger than me...or can you get small slaves...?" he asked, actually quite curious.

"Well, they should, but the ones who don't know better may not see you as master, simply because you are young, not knowing that our youth are still even greater than they." Fiercer, more powerful, stronger of will if not yet in body. "But you can get small slaves, as well - even filth reproduces."
