Ishi settled down cheerfully, flopping back onto the grass and staring up at the sky, looking for some of the other pictures Angelique had said were up there. There was supposed to be a swan, and a dog, and a man with a sword, but she couldn’t see any of those. Maybe she would when she got older? It wasn’t that important.

“We be friends, then!” she said brightly, grinning at Jamie. Then she paused, frowned just a little bit, and looked hard at the boy. “Is okay with you?” she asked, just to make sure.

He wondered if there were any other pictures in the sky. But after a long moment of looking he found that he couldn't see anything, so he let the matter fade away for now. But knowing him, he'd be looking again each night in hopes that he'd solve the puzzle. He was a bit stubborn like that; he could never leave something completely alone until he understood it.

He glanced over at her, seeming a little surprised by her question. But he smiled none the less, his blue eyes gentle in the dim lighting, "Yes! Be friends." Friends would be nice, especially if Ishi liked it so much. Because for now, making other people smile was his #1 hobby.

Becca was a woman of heightened senses. And that meant that she had been sitting in the "silence" for the past few minutes with the other woman's longing to talk knocking at her door. It wasn't stated, or imposed, or even really implied, since the woman was relaxed, but Becca could sense it anyway. Such was the way with a 'wolf. It was a troublesome thing about humans; they didn't know how to hide emotion, at least not from "animals".

Since it seemed that she wouldn't be left alone with Jamie anytime soon she reluctantly heaved out a conversation, "So...why did you come here at this time of night anyway? Not many people do."

Ishi giggled with glee and clapped her hands when Jamie agreed to be her friend. Her first friend! Yay! She was pretty sure that the strange girls Wisp and Jace (one of whom bewildered her, the other of whom terrified her) were not her friends, and her family was her family, not her friends. So Jamie was her first friend! This was so exciting!

She almost bolted upright to tell her mother, but Mercury looked busy.

"The girl's allergic to sunlight," Mercury answered quietly, already halfway asleep and lulled by the night sounds. "She can't go out during the day, and I promised I'd let her come and play at the park." She paused for a moment, then went on. "I'd ask the same of you, but you don't seem the type to answer personal questions." She turned to look at Becca and smiled. "We're interrupting your space, I know," she added, and managed an apologetic shrug. "But your child was about Ishi's age, and it's sad to me that Ishi can't really make friends like most children."

"We be friends for long time," Jamie added, nodding his head sagely. He had one other friend too. But he was certainly at the age where he would never believe that friendships would end once made. Friends forever, in a manner of speaking.

"Interrupting...implies I have some claim on the area," Becca responded simply, "Of which I don't. So...you can come whenever you like." She wasn't really too fond of humans; she had no real dislike for them, she just recognized their differences. But as a 'wolf she understood loniness and companionship better then most. Better then she'd ever admit to herself. So she could not let herself push the other woman away...not when it meant making her child suffer from lack of companionship.

Ishi paused for a moment, and then nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah!" she said brightly, breathlessly. "For long time! Mama!" she called out, turning and scampering over to Mercury. She tripped and sprawled onto Mercury's lap, ending up looking at Becca with her bright grey-green eye, turning her head to fix that good eye more firmly on the 'wolf's face. "Hi," she said politely, then turned and looked back at Mercury.

"Me an' Jamie, we's be friends!" she said brightly. "For long time!"

Mercury chuckled and ruffled the little girl's hair, giving Becca nothing but a solemn nod accompanied with a friendlier smile.

"That's great, Ishi," she said. Ishi nodded rapidly, then yawned a little bit. Mercury chuckled and picked her up, cradling her to her chest. Ishi yawned again and cuddled against her. Trying her hardest not to disturb that comfort, Mercury stood up. "You tired?" she asked the girl. Ishi nodded and inserted her thumb into her mouth. "Well, we'd best be going, then," Mercury said with a smile, and nodded to Becca. "It's been nice sitting with you. Say good-bye to Jamie," she said to the girl. Ishi blinked, then turned to fix her good eye on the little boy.

"'Bye," she mumbled sleepily, then closed her eyes and laid her head on Mercury's shoulder.
