Ray laughed at Will, "It's been quite a while since little Willie the Weasel has been here, now isn't it?" she laughed once more, "Everything is pretty much as it was before you guys had left," she smiled, "oh yes, will you be having anything there Willie, or are you just going to stand around all day?" she asked Will before turning back to Mana.

"Ah, you were picked up on the Cuore's last journey around the seas," she smiled, "it's been quite a while since I felt the thrill of sailing the sea," she sighed softly, as she remembered the accident that caused Rusty to have to leave his post as First Mate, and open this bar. She shook her head, as she returned from the world of her memories," Well, in any case, welcome to the island there Mana, hope you enjoy the place we all call home."

"I thank you m'lady. I am sure I will find my place here just as I have on the ship." He smiled politely at her again then turned his attention to his fuzzy friend. He wondered if he should tell William what the Captain had said to him before they left the ship. Would William be jealous or upset at the notion of Mana rising in the ranks before him? After all, William had been a member of the crew long before he was.

"I'll get a bowl o'stew, lass, if I may," Will said to Ray with a grin, "an' less o'the embarrassin' names in front'a me messmate 'ere." He was teasing about the last part. Mostly. "An' Mana, less o'the fat an' lazy in front'a the girl. I dunno - between you two I'll end up wi' no self-esteem at all."

And that he was definitely teasing about. His ego was iron-clad - it'd take a lot more than a few silly nicknames to spoil his good mood. After all, they were back on shore at last. He'd be able to get the sword he'd found fixed up, see about making a little bed for Scrap in his hut, get in some practice with the new weapon...eat something other than biscuits and fallen foes...it was all good. By the time they were ready to sail again, he'd be keen for the sea and adventure. For now, he was happy to be a little bit more domestic.

((Sorry for the slow, guys - everything's still a little crazy over here. ^^;; ))

Mana just grinned at his friend as he ordered. The water tasted great, not stale or overly warm from having to boil the salt out of it. But he still had something on his mind. He looked to his friend, his first true friend. He wondered what the weasel would think about him being promoted. Well there was only one way to find out. "Hey William. The captain spoke to me before we disembarked the ship earlier. He...he said I might not be a rigging rat for much longer."

Will blinked at Mana, stunned. He couldn't mean what it sounded like he meant, could he? "Bleedin'ell... I thought 'e liked ye. 'E said you fitted righ' in with th'crew - why'd'e want t'throw ye off the ship now? ...'E's not really throwin' ye off, is 'e?" It wouldn't feel right, being on the Cuore without Mana. They were the best of friends. ...But maybe that wasn't what Mana had meant at all.

Mana smirked a bit and shook his head. "No William....I think he means I'm going to be promoted soon. He seemed very pleased with me so I think I might make look out. But frankly I wouldn't want it unless you could join me. It would be rather dull without you around." He looked to his fuzzy friend and smiled softly.

"Ohphew." Will collapsed on the table. "Though' we were in fer a disaster there fer a minute," he said, somewhat muffled, and sat up again with a grin. "An' I wouldn't worry abou' tha' if I wuz you. I bin up fer promotion fer a while now, an' we make a good team - wi' my good eyes an' your good eyes an' wings we could 'ave summat good goin', though I don' mind admittin' I ain't got the details straigh' yet."

He did like the idea of working with Mana, though. They were a good pair already - the rigging would doubtless miss them if they were ever removed from it, but he suspected the other rigging rats would pick up the slack. (They'd be hearing about it from him if they didn't.)

Ray smiled, "Oh come now Willie, I've known you since you joined the crew of the Cuore, I think I should be able to tease you a little!" she ribbed back at Will, "Alrighty, a bowl of hearty stew, coming right up!" Ray giggled softly and went back behind the bar, and into Rusty's little room.

"Rusty, an order of stew!" she softly yelled at the lazy man, she came back out of the room and looked over to Will and Mana, "The stew might take a little while, Rusty has been trying to make it taste even better!"

Rusty continued to stir the stew with a large, cane like object. He sighed for a moment, as he thought about how he went from First Mate, down to the cook in this place. He laughed a little afterward, his laugh being loud enough to be heard through the whole establishment.

"Ray!" he yelled out, "The stew is almost ready, bring me a few coconut shells for bowls!" he smiled, he was certain that this was going to be the best stew that anyone had ever tasted, and if it wasn't... He'd just eat it himself!

Mana smiled at his friend, glad he was confidant they wouldn't be seperated. He watched the banter between Ray and William. He felt a little out of place, being the one that was no afflicted with their curse. Of course she wouldn't know that, only William did. But it was still something that made him feel seperated from the whole. "So you and William have been friends for many years, Ms. Ray?"

Ray giggled at Mana's words, "I guess you could say that, but I think I was more of a protector than a friend," she laughed a little louder, she stretched the truth a little bit, but she felt it was time for a story... "I remember one time, Captain Teneck decided we were going to attack a group of three French Frigates," she paused for a moment to look over at Rusty...

"We sunk the first Frigate by cannon-fire, then boarded the other two," she smiled, "Willie was quite fearless, and rather new to the ship then, so he ran right onto the enemy ship with a tiny dagger in hand!" she laughed once more, "He actually didn't do too bad until he got surrounded by about six of the French Merchants." She sighed, she really missed life on the sea, and brining up old stories, even if rather exaggerated, made her miss it more.

"Willie happened to get lucky though, I saved his behind by taking out five of the six, letting him take out the sixth..." she looked down to her normal hand, then the fox paw, "I was certain the lad had soiled his britches before I had saved him!" she laughed again, as she turned to Rusty once more. She threw a few coconut shell bowls into his small area, "Hurry it up dear, I think we might get a few more visitors soon!"

"I did no such thing!" Will protested through chortles. He remembered the incident, though, and Ray had certainly saved his life. "An' I'll grant ye four an'alf o' th' six, Ray lassie, an' no more! Th' last one we took down t'gether, I'll never ferget tha'." He'd managed to duck behind the much larger man and hamstring him with the dagger, leaving him helpless to Ray's blade. Turning to Mana, he grinned as he dug in his purse for coins. "Ray saved me arse on qui' a few occasions, she did. ...There y'are, lass, that oughtta cover it." He dropped a few coins on to the table. "If there's any lef' over, ye can owe me a drink."

Ray's stories made him remember his first few weeks aboard ship. He'd been bitten by an infected weasel after discovering the ship docked near his hometown, and the crew had taken him aboard to avoid discovery - still one of the luckiest breaks of his life, as far as he was concerned. It had rescued him from his father and brother, from a dull life doing odd jobs around the inn, and he'd found his calling aboard ship as a joker and rigging rat. He'd been just a lad back then, though, and he was still grateful that Ray had been around to watch his back.

"Tha's the thing abou' that ship," he said thoughtfully. "Even if ye don' star' out the same as ever'one else, it levels ye. It brings ye into its fam'ly. ...Fer folk like me, what 'ad no place else t' belong, the curse of the Cuore Scuro ain't no curse at all."

"Even those of us that did have a home and a family who cared have found something to belong to on the ship. Ramla would give me one good smack across the head if I said I didn't enjoy being a pirate. She always said it was in my blood of sorts. Both the animal and human part of me. I don't remember if you met her while the ship was in the Haiti region, William." He looked to his wings for a moment, the snow white feathers laid all perfectly and unruffed. For a pirate he kept as clean as he could with the huge wings. One break or a few lost feathers could mean a lot to someone who flew. He also thought of his foster mother and still worried a bit about her safety. But he knew the community adored her and respected her abilities as a spirit talker. He had wondered about William's family, if he even had any. But their friendship kept him from asking; if William wanted to tell him, he would.

At the mention of Mana's foster mother, Will became thoughtful. "I did, fer a moment," he said. "She...tole me summat she shouldn't've known, an' it caught me by surprise." She'd mentioned his brother. Robert. The one he'd... "Seemed the honest sort, an' I've no doubt 'er magic - or wha'ever it is - comes in mighty 'andy."

She'd asked him if he regretted what he'd done. And when he'd said no without missing a beat, she'd...nodded, as if she had neither wanted nor expected to hear any different. He didn't need anyone's approval, but it had been good to have someone like Ramla on his side.

"I don' miss me family," he said, still a little more subdued than his usual bouncy self but by no means unhappy. "Hm - 'sept maybe me mam, but she died long ago. Ain't nothin' in this world t' miss of 'er now. She were sick fer a long time. It were...y'know, it's odd, but it were almost nice to see 'er go at last. Wherever she gone, it can't be worse 'n what she went through in life."

Ray finally got the bowl of stew from Rusty, she wasn't too impressed with how long he took to fill the order, but at least it got filled. She walked over to Will and Mana's table and placed the bowl in front of Will, giving him one of the crudely carved spoons that she kept in her apron.

"There you go Will, you're going to be our taste tester on this batch," she giggled, "so it's on the house," she winked to Will, then walked back to behind the bar. Very loud grumbles could be heard from Rusty's room, most likely for giving the meal for free.

Mana smiled when William said Ramla had told him something she shouldn't have known. She was scarily good at that. Her connection with the spirits as a manbo was very strong so she often had hidden or secret knowledge. "If you hang around her long enough you get use to that. But needless to say I never got away with anything." He chuckled a bit at the memories of him trying to hide something he got into only for her to already know as if she had been there.

"I thought I would miss the community, just the togetherness I was use to. But being on the ship I have my own community, so it has lessened my homesinkess." He listened to will talk about his mother when a wash of very bad memories came over him, one's he only saw in his nightmares. These nightmares had often woken him with tears in his eyes and his breathing fast. On the ship he was able to control himself a bit better, usually going off to fly and trying not to wake William up.

Everytime it was the same dream. A beautiful woman with blonde hair, her face filled with saddness and dispair, leaping over the edge of a cliff and sailing off into the fog below. A small Mana would always run to her, try to stop her, and always fail. Ramla always told him not to think too hard on this nightmare, but it all seemed so real. He shivered a bit and went back to concentrating on his water.
"The ill......are....often happier once they pass into the spirit world."
