I was thinking of government corruption in a medieval setting and the plotting of many deaths, but all the while there's an encroaching darkness, if that's anything you're looking for. I'll just let you know I'm the involved sort and throw many subplots and twists into my roleplays. I hate to leave people bored so I always give people their own subplots.
