Thats a load of balogna. your finger are on the frets most of the time, redering any sustain, or tone "enhancements" worthless. plus, unless you have a perfectly snag free nut with lots of lube, it decreases tuning stability as its easier for the string to get snagged during a bend or vibrato(finger or bar). it also helps make it easier to access the truss rod so companies dont have to bother routing as much.

I'm not sure what you mean by getting your strings "snagged" on the nut. But then, what are the purpose of string retainers?
