No. It doesn't affect them now a days. They couldn't be able to accurately trace ancestry back. It was allowed back then, and they were properly bought and sold property.

As a Black woman, I must say I've seen both sides of the picture. No one should get ANY type of perk because of what their heritage is. We also need to quit using language like "minorities," because, who is the REAL minority in the US?

As it is, this is just a way for a few people wanting to take advantage of others. Who should pay? Why? Everybody has been stepped on or discriminated against at one point or another. Should you pay the idiot who is offended with your beliefs? How about the victims of rape or murder? Life isn't fair and never has been. Work for it if you really want it...don't ask for the easy handouts.

Cathedral [All_Black] Zorlock Darksoul I didn't catch the Internet debate, but I like that idea about "pooling" reparation money to fund things like school or healthcare for those seeking reparations. I don't know enough about the process to make judgements about the people who actively seek them, but the concept itself could probably use some work if just anyone can claim to be the descendant of a slave and then toss the money out the window. I am African American, if you did not know that, and so I can provide that point of view. (Isn't it fabulous?) I agree that African Americans recieving money as a whole population to better the living stardards that most African Americans are forced to live in is great. But, on the individual basis this policy is not a good one.
I know from personal experience that many (not all) African Americans have put themselves in such positions because they think the world owes them something and is going to give it to them. If the world does give these individuals what they want then they will be even LESS motivated to better their own lives. Why? Because someone is going to take care of them.
And even though I want better for my people, and the concept is good, I can't help feeling that part of the reason why so many African Americans are suffering is because of their own ignorance. I don't believe that people who refuse to put an effort into their own future should be rewarded.
Did I make any sense?I just fell in love with your answer, seriously. heart
You're right. Being given benefits for events that happened centuries or decades ago is a way of pitying a race and indirectly segregating, albeit benefits are being given.
For example, something like Affirmative Action completely ticks me. It's the most blatant expression of pity for a race that I've ever seen, and I can't believe it's taken in serious consideration. Rather than receiving benefits and reparations for your race, it must be for your skill and your good qualities as a person.
God, you're my heroine. <3

These little knights... Personally, I'm kind of annoyed when it comes to Black (yes, I say Black and not African American. I will explain later.) who complain about the treatment their ancestors received in America 300 years ago.
1.) It's been hundreds of years since Black people have been slaves. I'm sorry if I come off rude, but it's time to just forget it. It hasn't happened to these people personally so why are they taking it so personally? If they're so mad about being brought here, why don't they do a bit of a backround check and find their original home country? (I know it's hard, but it is possible.)
2.) I've only heard Black people calling out the slave card against America. I've never heard them call it out against anyone else. America did not start slavery. Slavery began LOOOOOOOOOOOONG before America, yet I only see America being picked on for it. I say, if you're going to complain about treatment in one country, then complain in all countries.
All in all, I say no. They shouldn't get reparations.
(For those of you who are curious, or offended, as to why I said Blacks and not African-American is because I personally believe you are African-American when you are a first or second generation immigrant from an African country. Otherwise, you're just Black in my eyes.) ...will rock your world

I say No to this. Why? it's like where my mother works (DHS food stamps in a poor neighborhood.) She used to see well over two thousand clients (families) a day and had the highest case load in the state. Why? She had medical, food, AND daycare benefits to approve and/or deny and call people and get cases done and such. This was a town of Hispanics and African Americas (nothing racial intended here). They would sit and whine and complain if they didn't get even one of those. This only encourages people to just sit there and let the government take care of them because they can't "get a job". What would happen if one African American could prove their heritage and they got the benefits but the other couldn't prove it and they didn't? That would divide even more people and would create utter chaos and it's probably likely even more identity theft.
tldr;;
No, they shouldn't be rewarded for what the haven't done.
