"Ohhhh, um...how about don't go in with a cast?" Riley said, still looking really bored. The only reason she said that one was because...she had tried to get Victor to take her to the pool only to have him say she couldn't get her cast wet. She didn't know why that was a problem though. Geeze, this cast was a pain. And obviously she wasn't even thinking about the question anymore.

Manny seemed to have forgotten that she was eager to answer the question and dropped her hand to return the wave. Well, everyone else seemed to be just answering. "Don't run when the ground is wet," she tossed into the mix, "And don't go in when the lifeguard is gone."

"Per-fect," the teacher said. DON'T RUN! was added alongside WAIT FOR THE LIFEGUARD! "Totally right, and so is - oh, let me guess - Taki? No, you're Ignacio, aren't you? Lucky for me there aren't so many of you, I can guess most of the names. Blonde, dark-skinned, you're definitely Ignacio. I think we can put that down as 'know your limits'."

Ms. Lindy scribbled again and beamed over her shoulder at Riley. "And you're right about the cast, too, only I'm hoping it'll be off before pool time so it won't matter! We only go in a couple weeks. We'll talk that one over with Coach, okay? Even if it's off you'll probably be wanting to be careful with it, but you can still go in the water if the plaster's gone. These are some great ideas! How about the shallow end and the deep end? Anyone got any safety ideas for those?"

Harper grinned a bit and cleared his throat, "Dunk people in the deep end?" He suggested. Such had always proven true from his very brief experience, Sunny was too tall to be effectively dunked in the shallow end...

Yes, older but not wiser. Antony fought the urge to lean forward on the table and take a nap. This class was horrid, and if he really needed to learn these things his father would have told him already, right?

Of course the lake's shore hadn't been slippery. But that was besides the point. He wanted a pen, paper, and something to write down, darn it!

Manny laughed a little when Harper mentioned that, then took on a more serious face. "Um," she started, "Don't dive into the shallow end." That was a good one, most pool bottoms were concrete like the sidewalks after all, and falling on the sidewalk hurt.

Delilah also seemed to have dismissed the class as uninteresting and was busily fiddling with the loops of purple ribbon around her wrist. She had finished inspecting the fascinating teacher and had lost interest the moment the talking had started. She wasn't particularly enthused with this pool idea.

Laughing, Ignacio grinned across at Manuela and then shared it with Harper. "Shallow ends are for if you can't swim," he offered. "Like what's that thing. Stay out of the kitchen or something. Don't pick on the kids in the shallow end 'cause they'll get hurt."

Ms. Lindy laughed goodnaturedly at Harper, but she tapped the pen on the board. "I think we're going to go with Manuela's idea," she said. "I can see where you're coming from, Mr. Piercings, but no dunking sounds like another good rule to follow on our trip. Believe me, kids, never ever dive into the shallow end. You could crack your head open like a melon!"

On that happy thought, she wrote down the new ideas. "Swim in the shallow end if you don't feel confident," Ms. Lindy said out loud, scribbling. "And let's make that don't pick on anyone. Good stuff!

"We'll be getting the pool code of the pool we're going to to study next week," the teacher continued. "Some pools don't like you doing some kinds of jumps - no cannonballs, frinstance - or diving at all, unless there's a diving board. But until then, we're going to raise awareness of general pool safety. We're going to make posters to stick up around the school! I want you to pick a rule and then do a drawing illustrating that rule, okay? Just like a real safety poster. So it might look like this!"

Ms. Lindy quickly drew a rectangle on the board, writing NO RUNNING! at the top. Then she drew a stick figure (it appeared to either be running or had severely malformed legs) with a cross through it. "Unfortunately you won't be able to mimic my amazing art skills, but you can try," she said, putting the pen down and grabbing a stack of paper from her desk. She dumped this stack cheerfully in the center of the table. "Make these as colourful as you can, okay? We want to get people's attention. Ready, steady, go!"

Manuela was glad for a chance to be creative, and quickly reached over the table to grab a sheet. But what rule was she going to do? Hmm, none of the ones they had written on the board seemed like they'd be fun, but what had Ms. Lindy just said? No cannonballs? That could be cool. Yeah. Absently she grabbed a handful of crayons from the box, picking her favorite color to start with.

Go? What? Harper looked around for what to do, but his sight was soon locked on the teachers drawing. "Is that Jacoba?" He asked with a giggle, pointing at the stick figure with the 'running' legs on the chalkboard.

He glanced at Manny and decided to grab his own paper; deciding a picture of someone breaking their neck because they were diving in a shallow end would be fun.

Riley had completely zoned out during the discussion, finding the whole thing boring and very limiting. She hated limits more then anything. So with a snort she leaned forward, taking a piece of paper reluctantly. She knew exactly what rule she was going to do. Not that it was listed on the board or anything. She was going to take uh...creative liberties, so to speak. Snatching up a bright red marker with her left hand she thumped her cast onto the table on the edge of her paper to keep it from sliding everywhere.

She promply drew an odd looking frowny face and wrote "NO FUN" in bold letters. She was obviously no artist.

Antony, reluctantly, searched through the rules and came out with the lifeguard one. For a moment he stared at it, having never seen a lifeguard in his life.

Then he decided to draw his father in his swimming trunks and with a sign over his neck that said "lifeguard." His art was actually very good for a child. But not perfect. It would have been much better if Shade was standing in front of him.

Beside her, Ignacio glanced at Riley's work and his eyes widened a bit. Quickly, he ducked his head again to hide his snickers and began scribbling two people wrestling in the water. His art was a step above stick figures, thanks to his father.

Delilah craned her neck to try and see what was so funny across the table. Not being able to see, she sighed under her breath and reached for a piece of paper and a green crayon. Then she glanced sideways at Antony and Manuela.

Biting his lip in concentration, Harper carefully drew the sideways torso of a stick figure. His line work was unsteady and bumpy to say the least.

Then, carefully, he drew a crack in the neck and the head going off in a different direction. "How do you spell 'neck'?" He asked nobody in particular, not having a single clue how to spell anything.

Riley put the finishing touches on her "work" and then pushed it away so that she could sit back and not worry about it. If her attention span for work was bad now, it was hard to imagine what it'd be like when things got hard. Blinking silver eyes she leaned over closer to Iggy, trying to get a better look at his sign. His drawing reminded her of Runeh and Mikael. Obviously they didn't pay attention to pool rules. Which she didn't blame them at this point. Her own sign was proof of that.
