Sheltered_Dork FaeryOfMoonlessNight Question: One of my clarinets won't play a middle B when I use the left-hand fingering. As it turns out, my C key isn't going down all the way, allowing air to escape and preventing sound unless I hold down the key. This isn't a big problem, but it IS annoying in runs and things like that. Can anyone help?
Hmmm. I would say that it probably just needs to be taken into the shop for an adjustment. I wouldn't advise trying to bend the keys on your own. Or possibly it just needs a new pad? But definately take it into a music store and have them look at it. I bet they could fix it for you.Okay, thank you for your help! ...Even though you'll probably never see this post...Haha. The Great irony of forum posting. rofl

exploding_emo_cupcake I have only been playing for two years but yet it seems to easy for me, any advice,i am in my school intermediate band it is to easy and I am the best one their sometimes it drives me crazy, advice please, HURRY! cry Harsh, but true fact: Playing with a school band is very irritating. It is irritating..but only if you let it be, it's only easy because you aren't thinking of ways you could make the music sound better than you already make it sound. If it's easy for you, you're not working hard enough. My advice to you though, if you don't want to work at it, is just stick with it. you will get harder music, but later on in your schooling. When you get to high school the music will be A LOT harder. If you think it's easy now and you stop practicing "because you're the best" you'll only get worse, and the people who were supposedly not as good as you will get first chair....telling a bunch of musicians that "music is easy" is like telling someone you're bored.(if you tell someone you're bored, all you're really telling them is that you don't have the imagination to entertain yourself...aka...you're boring)

When I first started, I was naturally good as well. But trust me, practicing will only bring you good. If you continue not to practice and you then reach the point here you and everyone around you will have to play harder literature, and you'll thank the stars for a daily practicing schedule. You can't always rely on being naturally good, that will onkly get you so far..that's why I lost my first chair for a year, because I got overly confident and stopped practicing. THen, the 4th chair clarinetist worked hard on her audition piece for the next year, and beat me out for the top chair. Nothing can replace practicing and hard work. Oh, and please never tell a band director that. They want to see you work to your full potential, and most get infuriated when they hear that you don't practice, EVEN if you are the best.
ANd as for the school band, we have all been there, and in a while it won't be so bad. Just don't get discouraged by it and keep up with your musical career and you'll do great! I have been playing since the 4th grade and I am almost a Sophomore in college now, and my musical career has brought me more pleasure than I could have imagined! Best of luck to you!!!! heart

I've been playing clarinet for about 6 years, and I'm going to an arts high school to better myself in that respect. I love playing so much!! ^^ I've never had an opportunity to play in a marching band though, just concert bands and orchestras (which are fantastic in themselves, of course wink ). As a side note, my conductor/music teacher is amazing!!!!!! 3nodding

<33333
I'M SUCH A HAPPY CLARINETIST! <33
I've already introduced myself here, but I don't recognize you, so just to say it again cause I'm an attention whore;
I go to Waukesha North High School (Yes, THE Waukesha North High School that wins all of the marching band tournaments <3 ), I play in both the marching band and the concert band. In concert band I am first chair and am the underclassman of the bunch (freshman). In marching band I play first clarinet with the juniors and seniors.
Alright, I SWEAR I'm not an egomaniac of a person; I'm just proud of myself and it goes to my head. My apologies.
NOW ON TO WHY I'M A HAPPY CLARINETIST! <33
I GET TO PLAY AN Eb CLARINET FOR OUR UPCOMING CONCERT!
I've been practicing with it for a couple of weeks now; maybe a month or two, and I absolutely love it. It's about half the size of the clarinet and plays a full octave higher. Typically, now, I match with the flute.
I SERIOUSLY recommend any clarinetist to try it. It's so much fun!

anyone here double on alto sax too? I like my clarinet but there aren't very many Jazz pieces for it so I reserve Lucy (mu clarinet) for concert and Dante(alto Sax) for Jazz. I currently atten Klahowya Secondary school. and I heart Music in may.

I'm much the same way as you two; I can sight read like a beast.
But at the same time, I never became anything of a serious musician until I started taking formal lessons, taking them seriously, and buckling down to practice.

malama-chan Hiya ClarinatistsXD. Ive only been playing for 3 years but good enough rite!? =P Still trying to learn circle breathing D8 ...3 years and you're trying to develop circular breathing?..might i suggest that you DON'T, at least not yet. If you try to develop it right now you won't be able to keep your embouchure solid, when you play you will sound horrid. You should PROBABLY wait until you've had more experience. That way you can control the sound coming out at the same time you are circularly breathing. also...if you only play clarinet...why do you need to learn to circularly breathe? i mean...i have enough trouble getting the air OUT fast enough, i'd work on developing how long you can go without taking another breath. Clarinet is not an instrument that demands circular breathing, it doesn't take very much air at all. and if you CAN get all your air out before you NEED to take another breath, work on increasing how much air you can take in...(in other words increase your lung capacity)
