We are short staffed as well because people just don't
show up to work as well. Especially on replenishment because
it's a lot of work. More than many anticipate.
With the lights off, I know my managers would tell people
regardless, even if they just happened to "walk by".
As for the getting hurt, my manager is on top of that and
makes sure the reports are filled out promptly and the
person who is hurt is either sat down until they are okay
or are sent either home or the ER, whichever is appropriate.
Has your mother considered applying for the manager
position since she's pulling the hours of one already?

She hasn't because of the current living situation.
She generally doesn't want to work there even if she were the manager, but doesn't currently have any other options.
Not until she's able to find work elsewhere.
Alot of her coworkers give her s**t as well.
But she's afraid if she says something to corp. about it that they'll make her wish she quit.
I suggested trying for Hobby Lobby across the street.
They seem to be nicer and well staffed.. then again could just be their facades, regarding attitude.
I understand you're never gonna get along with everyone and there's always gonna be those people who don't like to get along with everyone else and cause trouble.. but the extent to which these people do it is damn near unfathomable.
I don't know if I could believe it if I hadn't been there myself.
