The announcement of the train's arrival in Goldenrod City didn't cause Jaeshan to stir at all, and he shifted in his sleep, still holding onto a sleeping Torchic. The little Fire Pokemon adjusted her position to get more comfortable, and she sighed happily.
Jaeshan's determination to meet with Professor Birch ended abruptly when he discovered that the professor had gone off to do some sort of fieldwork, but it didn't stop the youth for long. After getting directions from his assistant, Jaeshan tracked down the adventurous Professor north of his small, hometown of Littleroot and finally managed to find the impulsive man making notes on a clipboard while sitting perched atop a large boulder, muttering excitedly to himself. Unsure of how to approach him, Jaeshan decided to just stand there, waiting to be noticed.
It took a bit longer than expected, but when Birch dropped his pen and had to scramble off his boulder-top perch to find it, he caught sight of the tall blonde boy and stopped, looking at him with wonderment. "Oh, hello," he said rather nonchalantly, "I didn't see you standing there."
Evidently, Jaeshan thought a bit sarcastically, but smiled. "That's quite all right, Professor. I'm not in any rush."
The professor studied him for a moment, then nodded. "You must be Jaeshan then," he said. "My assistant called and said you were coming. It's nice to meet you." He reached out to shake Jaeshan's hand, still grinning the whole time. It seemed that he was a very pleasant man.
"Nice to meet you too," Jaeshan returned, looking around.
"So then, you must have some questions for me about becoming a trainer, am I right?" Birch's eyes seemed to sparkle with mirth as he waited for the boy's response.
"Uh, well, yeah," Jaeshan chuckled sheepishly, scratching the back of his head. "I'm just not sure how to go about doing it, really."
"It's actually very simple," the Professor replied, pulling a red and white object from the front of his white lab coat. "You capture Pokemon in these, and you train them, and then voila, you're a trainer!"
"Well, err, yes," Jaeshan blinked, having not been expecting such a response. "I know all the basics and all that, but I need a Pokemon of my own first, and I heard that you're the one to see about getting my first Pokemon."
"I see," Birch said, somewhat crestfallen. For the first time, he looked a bit saddened. "Usually, I do give trainers their very first Pokemon, but unfortunately, Jaeshan, you're a tad too late. I gave away my last Pokemon just this morning."
Jaeshan felt his heart sink low into his stomach. "Oh," was all he could manage to say at first, and he scuffed the ground with his shoes. "I should have left earlier this morning," he said, forcing out a small laugh. "Oh well. I'm sorry for taking up your time, Professor," he said, giving a slight bow and turning to leave.

"Wait!" Birch called after him, jumping up from the boulder once more. "I can't just let you leave like this, not after you've come all this way." He looked around, thinking about how best to handle the situation, then smiled. "While I may not have a Pokemon for you, I do believe I can be of some assistance," he nodded; reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, clear container that held at least a dozen minimized Pokeballs. He opened the lid and pulled a few out, and held them out to Jaeshan. "With these, you're bound to catch one, even if you don't have your own Pokemon to help you right away."
Jaeshan looked at them for a moment or two before reaching out to take them. His guide told him that it was possible to capture a Pokemon at full health, but it was far easier to do so if they were already weakened. "Thanks, Professor. I'm sure I can manage something now," he nodded, feeling a bit better about the way things had turned out.
"There are a lot of Pokemon that are easy to capture in this area," Birch continued, gesturing to the wide, grassy plains they were standing in. "Zigzagoon, Wurmple, Taillow, Poochyena, all of them are relatively easy to capture," he went on, tucking his pen into his breast pocket and putting his hands behind his back. "Once you have one Pokemon, it should be a lot easier to capture others."
"Right," replied Jaeshan, his spirits already uplifted. "It's best to carry a diverse team of Pokemon to maximize your potential for battle."
"That is correct," Birch nodded. "Someone has done his studying."
"Yes sir," Jaeshan grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I've wanted to become a trainer for quite some time now, even though my parents are against it."
"They'll come around to your way of thinking, you just have to give them reason to be proud of you. For instance, you could collect gym badges. Those require a lot of effort and preparation to earn, and only trainers who've acquired all eight official gym badges in a region will qualify for the Pokemon league, and a chance at becoming the champion."
This gave Jaeshan something to think about, although he already knew he didn't really want to journey around Hoenn. His medical studies had taken him to quite a few places in his home region, and he wanted to start somewhere fresh, like Kanto or Johto. The Professor gave him a bit more advice before sending him on his way, but only after Jaeshan promised to check in again at some point to let Birch check up on his progress. As he made his way back to Littleroot, Jaeshan did indeed spot a few of the Pokemon that Birch had mentioned, but he wasn't quite ready for the big moment as of yet. If he was going to capture a Pokemon, he was going to need to prepare, and that meant going home and getting everything that he needed ready in order to leave on his journey to become a great Pokemon trainer.

Jaeshan arrived home sometime after lunch, and then spent the remainder of the day gathering things he knew he'd need to take with him on his journey. He would leave tonight, venture to Rustboro City and then take the train to Kanto to begin his quest to collect the eight gym badges there. Excitement raced through him with each second that ticked by on the clock, and he felt himself getting more and more anxious as the time of his departure grew nearer. He chose to eat dinner with his parents, and like usual, the dinner table was deathly silent. He didn't make eye contact with either of them for fear of giving away his plans for leaving, but he did feel a twinge of guilt over leaving without telling them. I'll give them reason to be proud of me, he thought as he scooped up another serving of mashed potatoes. When I come home, I'll make them see that Pokemon Training can be just as prestigious as becoming a surgeon.
After dinner, he sat on the bed in his room, his backpack filled and ready by his side. He already wore a good pair of running shoes, as well as comfortable clothes for traveling and a warmer jacket over top. The Pokeballs Professor Birch had given him were stowed carefully in his pocket and within easy reach, even though he had no idea what Pokemon would be his starting companion. He checked his watch and the clock on the desk almost compulsively, and sighed. He still had another hour before the servants in the household would be finished with their evening tasks and retire for the night, and he didn't want to chance anyone catching him as he attempted to sneak out of the house for good. Carefully and meticulously he went over the itinerary in his mind, having decided to keep it in his memory rather than on paper in case he lost it. Once he left here, he'd venture north, past where he'd met Professor Birch to Oldale Town. Somewhere between there and Petalburg he planned to hunt for a Pokemon, and from there continue north through the woods, and then a bit out of the way from there would be Rustboro and the train that would carry him to his new destination.
Just as he'd decided to go over the details one last time, a sound from outside caught his attention. At first he was a little surprised, but then decided it was probably someone taking out the trash. He was even content to believe that explanation until he heard it again - someone or something had knocked over one of the trashcans. His heart raced a little as he jumped up from his bed and gathered his things, taking one last look around before he shut off the lights and closed the door behind him. The house was silent, and he stealthily made his way down the stairs, managing to somehow avoid detection and arrive at the door that lead out of the kitchens and into the yard. He carefully slipped through the door, being careful to lock it again as he shut it quietly behind him and stepped out into the cool, welcoming night air.

"This is good," he whispered to himself, sighing now that the hard part was over. He looked around for whatever had knocked over the garbage can, but couldn't see much due to the darkness. Maybe it ran off when I opened the door? he wondered, putting his hands on his hips and frowning. However, this didn't turn out to be the case as once again the rattling could be heard from nearby, and Jaeshan nearly jumped out of his skin in fright. "Who's there?" he managed to call out somewhat shakily, but wasn't surprised when no one responded. Gritting his teeth, he clenched a fist and made his way over to where the sound had come from.
The moonlight illuminated the area just enough for him to make out the dim outline of the garbage cans, usually standing in a neat row. The two on the far end, however, were both overturned, and their contents were strewn about the ground. And there, helping itself to a late-night snack was none other than a Pokemon. There wasn't much to see of it in the dark, but Jaeshan could see its fur was somewhat shaggy, and darker in colour. It wasn't very big, but as Jaeshan approached it, its ears perked up and it began to growl slightly at the human. Its eyes glowed a feral yellowish in the pale moonlight, and Jaeshan realized after a moment or two that it was a Poochyena that had been raiding the garbage.
"You're not supposed to be in there," the boy told the Pokemon sternly, who only replied with another angry growl. It seemed to be waiting for something, and Jaeshan soon understood that it was waiting for him to send out a Pokemon to battle against it. Now what? Jaeshan thought, looking around nervously. As much as he'd anticipated his first capture, he never actually had thought about how nerve-wracking it was going to be, nor that it would happen like this, let alone at all. He swallowed the lump in his throat, and tried to focus. Should I just throw a Pokeball at it or what...? Deciding that it was the best course of action, he did just that, quickly taking one of the three Pokeballs Birch had given him and quickly preparing it. He took a deep breath and threw it, being quite careful to aim as he did so. The Pokeball flew through the air and struck the Poochyena on the shoulder. With a confused yelp and a flash of reddish light it was pulled inside, and clattered to the ground, rolling back and forth vigorously.

The Noctowl/Wooper twin shouted out as he was soaked, but in the tension of the moment, hardly anyone would notice. Even the bratty boy, who would've usually made a big deal out of it, remained silent. . . It felt as if his lungs simply could not squeeze any air inor out with such a heavy atmosphere, much less could he speak. Involuntarily, he stepped back a smidgen, even though Ky wasn't exactly speaking to him -- this guy was really, really intimidating like this. And these two twins certainly weren't used to being the ones that were attacked, especially not by outsiders. A long time ago, their father had been wicked to them, but he'd left a long time ago and they had sworn never to be pushed around like that ever again.
Then again, his bro really shouldn't have bothered sending out that wretched Totodile. The Wooper twin fumbled a bit with words, for this was the first time he'd really felt guilt over only watching as that Totodile felt such anguish -- before, he'd simply shrugged it off as a weak Pokemon. "Ray-Ray, send out your other Pokemon," the boy said at last, his voice noticeably smaller than it had been before.
Mary-Anne, in the meantime, was paying little attention to the interaction between the three boys. In her mind, there was only the soft crying of the Totodile and its earlier scream reverberating through her mind; the agony of the Pokemon was more than she had ever felt or may ever feel. She couldn't say that she knew its pain, but hell, if its pain pained her, what must it feel like to that poor Pokemon, the poor little one. . . ? Rushing forward past Daemyn (who was still vigorously and half-vainly trying to rub the mud from his eyes with a paw), she dropped to her knees before the Totodile, maneuvering her hands to pick it up. At the last moment, however, she faltered (for what if she only hurt it more?) and instead whipped her bag around and rummaged for the Potions she knew she had packed when she left home.
"I don't know if this is the best thing for that cut, but. . at least it'll help, maybe," she whispered softly, now risking cradling the Pokemon in her lap. The Totodile had futilely resisted at first, but was too anguished by the pain to really push her away. Biting her lip, she sprayed the Potion upon the wound (whether it was a reopening of the scar of another cut on top of it, she couldn't tell) -- it must've stung horribly, for the Pokemon began to thrash again, and it was with great difficulty that Mary-Anne kept it still until the whole wound was addressed. "Shhh, now, it's okay, it's done, we won't do that again, shhh, it's okay," she whispered soothingly over and over again, trying to calm the Totodile until it thrashed no longer. The Pokemon still continued to whimper ever so softly, however, and the sound tore at the girl's soft heart. . . Whatever had happened to the poor thing?
Mary-Anne stood up a moment later, eyes steeling against the boys. Whatever they had done to the poor thing in her arms, she'd have retribution for it. Quietly, she moved back to where they had been standing in the beginning and gingerly placed the small Totodile in a cushiony grass patch, hoping to give it some rest. On a second's thought, she released Ulani -- the bird had a knack for cleaning, so perhaps it could clean the cut too? That the Swablu did once she saw the aggrieved Pokemon, and as Mary-Anne got herself set for battle once more, the little blue bird sang a soft, sweet little lullaby to soothe the Totodile to a less-painful sleep.

The Pokeball didn't remain like that for long, though, and a second later the Poochyena burst out of the Pokeball, snarling and growling fiercely. It didn't seem to like the surprise capture attempt, and it planted its four feet firmly on the ground and let out an eerie howl, all the while letting its shaggy fur stand on end to make it look bigger than it actually was. Jaeshan took a few steps back, looking down at the small canine with a mixture of fear and respect. It was much, much smaller than he was; yet the Poochyena showed no signs of giving the human in front of it any ground whatsoever, and instead was trying to intimidate him. Jaeshan admired that, and suddenly he found himself wanting to capture the Poochyena more than he had a moment ago.
"You've got a lot of spirit," the boy grinned, taking a second Pokeball in his hands and readying it. "I think you'll make a great first partner for my journey," he went on. The Poochyena blinked its yellow eyes again, a bit of its bristled fur calming down as it listened to the boy's words. Partner? No human had ever shown interest in him before, why now? Usually when he'd been caught getting into trouble, it meant a broom to the backside or a lot of angry shouting and people throwing things (like heavy shoes or even rocks). But this boy wasn't angry at him, no. In fact, he was trying to capture Poochyena! The Pokemon's thoughts had distracted him for only a moment, and this allowed Jaeshan to throw his next Pokeball. This time, the red and white sphere struck the small puppyish Pokemon on the forehead, and he was pulled inside again. Perhaps was due to the Pokeball striking him in the forehead and causing him to become dazed, or he somehow knew that the boy didn't mean any harm, but the Poochyena relaxed a bit, and allowed the Pokeball to work its magic.
Jaeshan felt his heart stop as the Pokeball landed on the ground, moving slowly back and forth. A clicking sound could be heard as it came to a standstill, and after a moment or two Jaeshan realized that he'd captured the Poochyena. He couldn't help but smile as he walked over and picked it up, holding it in his hand. He closed his eyes, as he was suddenly very aware of the fact that his journey had started right here with this first capture.

Keiichi, living on cinnabar, always likes to walk around the island, watching Pokemon battles, and occasionally sketch them down to learn more about them afterwards. Today is not different. He and his best friend Ian were walking near a Pokemon center when they heard Pokemon voices not far off. They followed those voices and reached four trainers who were in the heat of battling. Two of the trainers already sent out their Pokemon, and the other two were waiting. It seemed like a 2v2 match. Keiichi sat down at a nearby hill, which stood somewhat higher than the battleground, and brought out his sketch book and trusted pencil, and took note of the situation... "Ground type and a flying type, hmm this could be interesting" Thought Keiichi. After a few seconds the possible combo of these two Pokemon came to his mind. "Ah, I see." As he watched closed, he also made a note of that. Anxious to see their oppenents Pokemon out, both Keiichi and Ian were ...

... now deep in tune to the battle. As a matter of fact, Ian could recognize the two trainers who had sent in the Ground-Flying combo. He had seen them on TV before.
"Hey, I know those guys," Ian said as he sat down next to Keiichi. "Those are the Cinnabar Pranksters. They're supposed to be pretty good." There wasn't much excitement in his voice though. Normally he'd enjoy seeing a group of somewhat famous trainers, but in this case, he knew these trainers' method of challenging all too well. Sure, trapping trainers to force them into battles was common in gyms, but doing it otherwise was simply not cool. What was ever wrong with simply asking anyway?
"Hey! You two! I'm rooting for you guys!" he called out suddenly towards the red-haired boy and his girl partner. "These guys aren't so tough! Their record was only 2-4 last tournament!" he explained loudly with a mocking finger pointed towards the Pranksters. Only Ian would be able to recite such a fact. Along with constantly watching battles on TV, he also kept a keen eye towards the local newspaper's Trainer section. Since Cinnabar was home to such a powerful gym leader, various unofficial tournaments were held, and Ian made it his hobby to absorb all the statistics.

Jaeshan opened his eyes as the train's horn sounded loudly, jolting him out of his dreams and pulling him back into the present. Blinking, he sat up straight and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, suddenly realizing that Torchic wasn't in his lap any longer. He looked around fearfully before realizing she was perched up atop the headrest of the seat, contentedly looking out the window. She glanced down at him and chirped happily, hopping up and down excitedly. "Don't scare me like that," he grinned, reaching up and pulling the chick into his arms. She continued to make happy peeping sounds, although they were muffled as she nuzzled her head into his chest. "Where are we?" He slid over towards the window a bit more, and had a look outside. The train was still moving, but its pace was drastically slowed. They were pulling into a station, and Jaeshan kept his eyes open for a sign that would tell them what town or city they'd arrived in.
After a moment or two, Jaeshan realized with some excitement that they had indeed reached Rustboro. He could see the tall buildings of the stoically grey-coloured city rising up in the distance, and even though Rustboro was quite a ways off of his hometown of Littleroot, he couldn't help but feel a sense of security being back in his home region. He gathered his things and left the train as soon as he was allowed to, Torchic still resting comfortably in his arms. Her beady little black eyes were wide with excitement, and she tried to take in all the new sights as Jaeshan walked along the platform and ventured away from the station. His thoughts still lingered in the dreams he'd had during the train ride, and he smiled as he walked, not regretting his decision to leave home at all. He'd met many interesting people on this journey, and he'd definitely grown as a person in the year it had been since he left. After gaining his bearings, he started to head south, knowing it would lead him into the Petalburg Woods.

Though still a tad frightened, the Totodile fell easily to Ulani's soothing melody, leaving it to snore cutely in the soft grassy patch. As it slept, M.A.'s Potion worked its magic and the wound quickly healed over, though the scar remained the same as it was before.
Meanwhile, Ky paid just as little attention to M.A.'s actions as she to his. His anger was still boiling over and his steps continued menacingly forward. Ray hesitated to follow his brother's plea, stepping backwards at a slower pace as he gazed weakly into Ky's eyes. Unfortunately, this only angered Ky more. Unable to control himself, he jumped forward, grabbed the boy by the collar of his t-shirt, and yanked him until their eyes were within inches of each other. "SEND IT OUT... NOW!!!" Ky screamed again, shoving the boy so hard that it was impossible for the kid to keep his balance.
Now flat on his back, the kid sat up, noticeably shaking with fear. "F...f...fine," he stuttered, quickly wiping away the tears that were forming in his eyes. "Stupid bully," he said quietly as he reached for his last Pokeball. With a defeated look on his face, he sent out his final Pokemon, and out of the light came a blue Pokemon with a strange-looking orange bud on its head, a Gloom. "Use Sweet Scent on them," the twin ordered, and though it was obvious he was at a severe type-disadvantage, you could hear a confident tone to his voice. "Gloom," the Pokemon said, nodding with even more confidence than its trainer. With a quick burst from its head, the Sweet Scent quickly surrounded Little Guy and Daemyn. Unable to avoid the aroma, the scent's effect kicked in, lowering Little Guy's evasiveness.
As the battle kicked back into gear, Ky's anger subsided immediately, to the point where he was shocked. He made an awkward look towards M.A. as if asking her, "Did I really do that? Did I go too far?" "Of course I did," Ky thought, now horribly guilt-ridden. Nevertheless, he shoved his feelings aside. He thought about taking quick advantage of the Gloom's weakness, but realized that Daemyn would need help against that Wooper. "Little Guy, Leer!" Ky commanded. Now more alert than before, Little Guy hopped backwards in order to catch both Pokemon with his attack. As he met both opponents' eyes, he sent out an almost invisible charge, lowering the others' Defense.
Ky hoped that Daemyn would be able to follow up with an attack. The Houndour may have been at a disadvantage, but he still had effective moves.

M.A.'s expressive, dark emerald eyes widened at Ky's display of anger. She'd. . . never seen him like this. The slightest hint of horror could be traced upon her face, but that she had wiped away almost immediately after the battle had commenced once more. "Ky. . ." she said softly in return, unable to hide the lingering surprise in her tone.
She thought that it had been amazing that "Ray" had been able to gather his composure so quickly, however. If she had been in that position, especially with how the battle was going, she would have been noticeably shaken. Well, if he was good to go, she wasn't about to hesitate. Not this time. Seeing the opening Little Guy had brought upon their side, Mary-Anne quickly commanded another attack while their opponents were feeling the effects of the Natu's Leer.
Daemyn, having rubbed out a majority of the mud by now, complied easily, sending the umpteenth fireball towards the Gloom with renewed precision. His eyes were still stinging from the mud and he was rather tired, but he wasn't about to go yet!
His twin's confidence made the other boy feel more confident as well, and as if it had never left, his cockiness came back full scale. "Well, well, let's dampen that mutt once and for all! Wooper, Water Gun!" The Wooper, now excited and antsy from not doing much for the last while, reared backwards before gushing out a strong spray of, not mud, but water. Its aim was impeccable, and with Daemyn's sluggishness from the Sweet Scent, he couldn't very well dodge it -- the attack landed head-on, resulting in a very soaked, shivering, and drained Daemyn lying on the floor.
The pup struggled to stand up, willing his aching legs to lift himself up once more. The last attack had proved a bit too much for his strength, however, and before he could grind his teeth to studs from the sheer effort, Mary-Anne recalled him. "That's enough, boy -- you don't need put in overkill. You did good; let 'Lani do the rest," she commented, smiling fondly upon his Pokeball. The Swablu was up immediately, twittering about and just as jittery as the Wooper was -- she hadn't been doing much lately either, so she had plenty of excess energy to burn off. With a trill, the bird greeted Little Guy before actually focusing on the battle at hand.

Not too long after, a rustling sound was heard. A small Caterpie inched along slowly, trying to find the source of the sweet smell. The little green bug-type pokemon stopped as it saw Train, but then looked at Oddish as it realized that was the source of the smell.
'Not quite what I was hoping for...I'll use Pikachu for this one.' Train thought to herself. She glanced down at Pikachu, then back at the Caterpie. "Pikachu, Thundershock on the Caterpie!" She suddenly commanded, pointing at the pokemon that was now staring up at her in slight shock at the sudden noise.
Pikachu ran over to the Caterpie for a few steps before stopping to release a blast of electricity on the wild pokemon. The Caterpie cried out as it felt the shock course through it's body, and it squirmed a bit. The pokemon fell not-so-lightly to the ground once Pikachu stopped, and rolled over semi-weakly to get right side up once again.

What had happened after Poochyena's (well, now Mightyena's) initial capture was relatively short, but Jaeshan found himself reflecting upon it as he headed down the road that would take him into the Petalburg Woods. Torchic was now tottering along behind her trainer, pecking at the ground every now and then for a stray seed or perhaps a tiny insect to munch on. Her happy chirping let Jaeshan know she was still with him, and he tucked his hands into the pockets of his khaki cargo pants as he walked, occasionally diverting his gaze from the ground to the path ahead of him to be sure no obstacles were going to get in his way.
He'd stood there in that very spot for several moments before quietly clipping Poochyena's Pokeball to his belt (also a bargain-bin purchase) and turning to leave, but he stopped and looked at the trash strewn about the ground and frowned. It was against his better nature to leave it like that, and he sighed, bending down and returning the contents to their rightful place. However, now his hands were in need of a good scrubbing and with another heavy sigh, he made his way back inside where he washed his hands in the kitchen sinks, doing his very best to make as little noise as possible. He dried his hands on a towel and hung it back in its place before looking around one last time. As he turned to go back outside, he stopped and grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl on the counter and shoved it into his pocket as he headed towards the back door.
He'd just placed his hand on the door handle when a firm yet gentle hand came to rest on his shoulder, and Jaeshan stood rooted to the spot, frozen with fear and worry. The jig is up, he thought, feeling utterly defeated. He let his shoulders droop a little, and winced as he turned to face his capturer.

"Dad?" Jaeshan asked, blinking in surprise as he found himself looking up into the dark eyes of his father. The man simply nodded, and reached past his son to open the door before leading him out into the back garden.
"Have a seat," he said, pointing to one of the white wicker lawn chairs set in a circular pattern around a glass-topped table. The sun umbrella was closed, and it cast an eerie shadow over his dad's figure as they both took a chair. Jaeshan nervously placed his hands on the cool surface of the table, unable to avert his gaze from his father's no matter how much he wanted to.
For several moments, neither of them said anything; just continued to stare at each other across the table in the moonlight. Finally, Jaeshan's father, Edward, broke the silence with a painful sigh, and looked away from his son. One couldn't see it in only the light of the moon, but the blonde hair that adorned his head was dotted with wisps of ash-gray, and he ran his hands through it a few times before looking up at his son once again. "Were you really going to just up and leave, just like that, without so much as a 'goodbye' or a 'so long'?" he asked, a noticeable quiver in his voice despite his best efforts to remain strong. "Do you have any idea how much worry and pain you would have caused us?"
"D-Dad, I-I..." Jaeshan started, but found his voice failing him for words. Yes, he'd planned to leave without saying goodbye; if he'd so much as mentioned leaving home, they would have shackled him to the floorboards in his room. The youth stared down at the table, studying the blurred shapes of his legs beneath the glass plane of the table.
"Son, I know you've always wanted to do this, and quite frankly, I'm surprised you haven't done it already. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't have stuck around this long." Without even looking at him, Jaeshan could hear the sneer on his father's face just from the snide tone of his voice. Frowning a bit, he looked up into the eyes of the man he called father, waiting for him to go on. Edward simply grinned at his son, and folded his hands neatly over top of one another. "My dear boy, what I'm saying is this: Go. You've been wanting to do this for a long time now, and I don't want you waiting around here until it's too late. I'll talk to your mother, but you know as well as I do that she won't like it, nor will she understand it right away. But, given time, she will." He stopped there, waiting for Jaeshan to say something in reply.
"You mean... you're not angry with me?" the youth asked, scratching the back of his head. "You guys were so adamant about me doing something with my life, and you've always said that Pokemon training was a waste of time. Why are you suddenly encouraging me now?"
"I received a phone call this evening from a certain someone by the name of Professor Birch," Edward said, a knowing smile spreading across his face. "He's a father as well, so he knew what you'd be putting me through if you just up and left us. You probably don't know this, but he and I go way back. He chose the path of a Pokemon expert while I chose a more financial sort of career for myself. At first, I thought that Birch was wasting his time with his Pokemon studies, but seeing what he's become now has made me see things more clearly." He stopped again, and took a small bag from somewhere on his person and set it on the table, sliding it towards Jaeshan. "I didn't have much time, but here are a few things for your trip. Birch told me what kind of things trainers would be needing. There's some money, some healing items, and a PokeDex, although that was a gift from Professor Birch."
By that point Jaeshan had no idea what to say, but he gratefully accepted the items before thanking his father. Together they'd walked to the front gate, and said their goodbyes. Jaeshan would never forget the proud smile his father had been wearing the last time he'd seen him, and he vowed then that he would do everything in his power to continue making his family proud of him.
