Daren laughed, "if we decide to adopt, we'll talk to the people at the shelter and see what would be a good fit for us. they'll know the dogs and their personallities better than we do." he got up and took the now empty dishes to the sink. he ran water over them to rinse them off before returning to the living room, "how has work been for the two of you? are you still liking being a teacher, Amanda?"

"being a teacher is like being in high school. I love teaching but none of them ever listen. I wasn't that much of a smart-a** as a child! And Tim certainly wasn't! It's horrible! I saw a girl picking her nose and then wipe it on the desk!" "Children are horrifying. I'm glad we only had one." "And then I tried teaching them the difference between nickles and quarters and one girl didn't get any of them right and kept laughing." Tim gave a small smile, patting her back, "Well, children learn at different rates, right? I didn't learn my colors until second grade." "It's so awful and I still have tests to grade and lessons to plan."

Daren chuckled, "kids now are a lot different from our generation, that is for sure. maybe you can have a sort of store? and kids have to earn fake money through working hard and doing their homework. but they have to count the money out themselves in order to buy things?" he shrugged, ''though each teacher is different and has to figure out their own way of teaching, just like kids have their own way of learning."

"I was thinking about it, the school year is already halfway over, would it be too late to implement a storefront?" She sighed, thinking about this, "I think the main thing is to not ruin a kid's creativity." Rachel said, "I see too many kids lose that so young, but you're right, generation gap as well." "Are any of them like me?" TIm asked, hoping to help. "No, thank god." That made her son laugh and turn to Daren. "When I was little and I didn't understand something I'd just cry until Mom would come over and explain it or vice versa." "We spent many hours trying to get you to stop crying and understand it. And it was with all of his math too, and look at the field he's in." Rachel grinned, "At least he enjoys it. Stopped crying about it in ninth grade." "Mom!" Tim exclaimed, cheeks reddening at that information.

Daren shook his head, "not if you stale about stores and things like that. have a special lesson about shopping or planning a meal, maybe a budget, something like that, and then start the store thing." he grinned when they told him how Tim used to be. he could either be very mean or supportive here. given Tim's mindset lately, he'd be supportive. "well, he's highly intelligent so it must have been frustrating to not be able to figure something out on his own." he winked at Tim, "glad he grew out of that, i don't think i'd be able to handle a crying Tim. ti would break my heart."

"I know. But I'd need to get it passed with the school board which is a pain." "I keep telling her to ******** the school board and do whatever she wants. But she sticks to the rules. Tim gets that from her." "Rules are important." Tim defended before smiling at Daren's defending. "I'll be sure to never cry around you, then." "He'll probably cry if you get him a puppy." Amanda teased.

"But those would be happy tears. i can handle that, just not tears for the sake of tears. if someone is crying because they are sad, there are thing you can do to cheer them up. if someone is crying because they are happy, they are happy. but if someone is crying out of frusteration or something else, it's hard to deal with because there is nothing you can do." he shrugged, "tears don't scare me. the inability to act does." there was more truth in those words than he cared to admit.

Rachel stared at the man before looking at Amanda and standing, "Anyways. We just wanted to check up on the both of you. Thank you for the snack." She ruffled Daren's hair like he was six, going over to hug Tim. "Don't be strangers okay? You both are more than welcomed to come over. It's normally polite to bring your boyfriend over once for dinner." "I won't cook his favorite." Amanda whispered, kissing Tim's head, "But not anytime soon. It's testing week and I have to prepare tests. Maybe sometimes next month." "But thanks for letting us in. Don't clean too much and eat a bit more, the both of you." Rachel saw her and Amanda out, waving bye before closing the door behind them. That was fast. The redhead was just staring at the door before chuckling and looking at Daren. "You helped me when I was frustrated once."

Daren sat, stunned, on the couch after his hair was ruffled. it pulled at his heart and brought back memories that didn't hurt. he lifted a hand and touched the top of his head, tears filling his eyes. his mother used to do that, when things were good. she'd ruffle his hair and tell him how much she loved him. he'd forgotten, how could he forget? "what?" he asked, blinking hard to get ride of the tears, his voice breaking slightly. he looked up and smiled a little, "i did, didn't i? i got lucky, i guess." he stood up, "hey, you want something to drink? water or-or lemonade or something?" he needed a moment to collect himself.

"Daren?" Tim questioned, seeing the wet eyes. His name seemed to snap him out of it, though the red-head grew worried at the broken voice. "Lemonade sounds nice. Daren are you all right?" and stood as well, gently touching his cheek, "What's wrong? Are you crying?"

Tim's soft touch sent Daren's lip trembling and he lowered his head to hide his face. "i'm fine, just-" he cleared his throat, his hands tightening into fists as he fought to keep the tears from falling, "i remembered." that didn't help any and he took a breath so he could explain, "my mom-she used to do that. to-to ruffle my hair and, and i forgot." he sniffed and looked up and away, "this is stupid. i was just talking about how rough tears are and here i am about to cry over something tiny." he sniffed again, blinking hard. "i just-i'd forgotten that she used to do that. it was something i loved because it meant things were ok, that i was safe and she loved me and i just-forgot."

He gave a small smile as his boyfriend looked away. Daren remembered a happy memory. "It's not stupid. This is a good thing to cry over." and gently stroked his cheek, "But you remembered, and that's good. Right?" Kissing Daren would have been too much, so Tim had to be satisfied with holding his cheek. "You can cry all you want, I would cry too. I want to cry. They were so nice to you."

Daren carefully pulled Tim into a hug and placed his forehead against the man's shoulder. "then cry with me," he said softly as he gave in and let the tears flow. it didn't last long, only a minute or two, but he pulled away when the tears stopped and wiped his eyes. "they really were nice to me, weren't they? i thought i was dead for sure. one month in prison and i still shake with fear at the sight of them!" he laughed a little as he went to get some water for the headache that was starting to form. "it was nice, though. kinda felt like, well, like real family. i guess." he looked down into his glass, "oh, lemonade, i promised you lemonade." he pulled out some mix and a pitcher to make Tim his drink.

Tim held the other tightly, burying his face into the shoulder, glasses sliding up as he did so. He emitted a small whine, eyes growing wet. It was hard to cry, he realized, but this was more for Daren then for him, so he let the other cry on his shoulder, and Tim found himself slip a few tears of happiness for the man. "They were! They'll probably be nice in the future, then, won't they?" and chuckled, following him into the kitchen. "I like being a real family." At the mention of lemonade he looked up. "Oh! If it wasn't ready you don't have to!"

Daren shook his head, "it's ok, really. i don't mind and it's done in a flash." he put water into the pitcher and mixed in the powder, "see, done?" he poured out a glass for Tim and handed it to him. "yeah, maybe. maybe we'll have a good relationship from now on. so long as i don't screw up again." he rubbed the back of his head and sighed, "i've a headache and it's getting late. want to go to bed?" he wanted to snuggle with Tim, but if Tim wasn't tired, he wouldn't make him. he'd had too many emotions one after the other in the last hour and he needed sleep.
