"What do I do?!" Mala exclaimed frantically, reaching over to hold on tightly to Van with tears welling up in her eyes.

"All I know....is that magic won't work..." Van said, breathing heavily as he managed to push himself back to lay on the ground. "I'd help...but I think I'm gonna have to....sit this one out..."
Riley knelt down next to Van before looking back at Mala worriedly. If they didn't fix this soon....

"Aw, damn it! If I knew I'd be dealing with magic-sucking slugs of all things, I would've put a bit more effort into my physical strength!" Mala exclaimed, her mind seeming to completely blank out at this point. She just didn't know what to do and it was driving her nuts.

"You just stay with Van, I'll take care of 'em." Riley said as he got to his feet. "Van's not the only fighter around here, remember?" he said as he reached into his coat, pulling out his bo staff from his previously enchanted coat pocket of holding. Of course, this was going to be the first time he didn't have Van to watch his a** in battle, plus the guy's life was on the line, so no pressure. After taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, he charged in with a battle cry, staff posed to strike as the leeches noticed their attacker and began spitting a nasty looking goo at Riley.
While Riley was busy in battle, Van managed to take one of Mala's hands and tightened his already weak grip on it as he looked up at her. In truth, he was scared shitless right now; Mala was just the only one he'd show it to.

Mala could not hide her worry or her fears. She tried to offer him a reassuring smile as he clasped onto her hands, trying to give the impression that everything would be okay. However, as I've already stated, her obvious worries and fears betrayed any chance of getting the desired message across.

((Sweet baby jesus on a stick, I'm not explaining my massive crap day/absence again. Anime knows my hell, and that's good enough for me. Ye gods, I hate my dad....))
Too weak to sit up, Van pulled on Mala's arm ever so slightly for her to lean forward, just enough for him to give her a long, soft kiss before whispering to her, "I love you." Just in case they were his last words, though Riley seemed to be putting up a good fight.

Mala smiled a little more, having to fight hard to keep herself from sobbing right then and there. "I love you too." she said softly, moving up arm to gently caress his cheek.

"Hey, you two better not be having some mushy 'last words' moment over there!" Riley called as he swatted some bugs away. "Just hold on, Van! I'm almost done with these guys!" he said before one of the leeches managed to hit his shoulder, causing it to hiss slightly while Riley cried out in pain. "These things have acid spit?! Are you freaking kidding me?!" he said while wincing and quickly trying to get his coat off before he got burned any more than he already was.

Mala bit her lip, now worrying immensely for Riley as well as Van. She looked down at Van and,in order to keep her mind off of Riley fighting acidic leeches, asked Van, "It must be uncomfortable laying on the ground down there. Want me to move you up a little so you down have to use rocks as a sort of pillow?"

"At this point, even a rocky cave floor feels comfortable..." Van said wearily. "Besides, prop me up against a wall or something...and I'll just be an even bigger target for the grim reaper...Dying adventurers always die leaning against cave walls." he said with a tired chuckle.

Mala smiled faintly at Van, offering him a light kiss on the forhead. "If you'd like, you can rest your head on my lap if you change your mind." she muttured softly.

For the first time since she entered this cave Mala assured Van, "Things seem scary now but you aren't going to die. If you do I'll go to the underworld myself and drag you back.' Her tone was light, if shaky, and was clearly intended to help lighten her spirits a little if not Van's.
