As Elise turned around to talk with them more, she knocked her knife into the water.
Jake looked after the knife and then reached in for it. He laid down flat on the rock and reached his arm into the water. After a moment, he pulled his arm out, holding her knife. "Here you go," he said, handing the knife to her.
Elise nodded a little and dried the blade with her dress. Then, in a swift motion, she grabbed Jake's hair and pulled him close to her, holding the knife to his neck. "Explain yourself," she hissed to him.

"Hey what are you doing!" Hope cried and jumped to her feet.

"That water is sacred," Elise said. Some tears fell onto her dress. "Explain yourself!" she cried and pushed the knife harder to Jake's neck.
Jake closed his eyes and thought of what Hanyuu would have wanted him to say. "There is no excuse," he said. "No excuse for poisoning the sacred water."

"Well, don't you use your knife to kill things?" Hope asked, quickly. "So wouldn't it have poisoned the water before Jake could?"

"I use the knife to hunt," Elise explained, not moving the blade. "It kills to nourish me, and when I die I will nourish the animals. It maintains the order and the balance. Thus it does not poison anything. Jake's arm poisons it because it is not blessed and does not preserve order and balance."

"Doesn't seem like right now you're using it to nourish anything," Hope replied. "So how do we know that you only use it to hunt, and preserve this balance?"

"He must atone for his sins," Elise said. "But he has answered correctly. I will not take his life." She pulled the knife back and let go of Jake's hair.

Hope went towards Jake. "Are you okay?" she asked.

"Wait," Jake said, grabbing Elise's wrist. "Please sit with us a bit longer."
As Elise turned, her hair came away from her eye, which looked exactly like Jake's.
