Course not, I'm not going to lie that I do.
So... I'm going to think it's this since you're not telling me.
Either it was because that was the major attack with all its power ups that didn't do much stopping you.
OR! You're saving up another final blow.
OR~~ .... you're just waiting on everyone else to get the last turn before the Shade's next one.

Could be that he can't use that spell for 3 more turns, and it's really the best one he's got. Hence, if it didn't drop the Shade, he's going to have a hard time doing it with something else...thus, he will need to recover, charge, and chip in smaller attacks until he can hit it harder again? Assuming he has that long to do so...
That would be my guess.

On a turn-for-turn basis, Charging attacks is more effective. ^^ And it's best to hit the Shades HARD.

The counter side to just charging is that as hard as the Shade attacks, you might not survive until you're ready to attack again...and while you need to charge to hit it hard, it generally doesn't. XD
It's more of a pick your poison type of situation, faced with the hope that all of you together can outlast it.
