They are dopplegangers that represent the darkness in someone's heart. They also tend to be stronger than the real person, and have an amazing urge to fight them because of the southern mountain..... Kinda like killer bee's waterfall.
Or at least how I interpreted it.

Can you get any darker than a sadistic individual who easily gets pissed off at the smallest things, loves the sight of blood ( e.e;; ) and pleasures himself with it, abuses his clan abilities?
Of course, you could just go batshit insane.
