Lavi hurried around the statue when Sil called him, kneeling down beside her to read along with the plaque as she read it out loud, finding himself smiling delightedly at the discovery despite the fact that he was supposed to be miffed by her existence. Reading Pania's story, he recalled her saying back in the cavern something about a man she'd once lost and he figured this was probably what she'd been talking about. He wondered whether this was exactly how it had happened or if the legend had been twisted the more it got told, as often was the case. She had led them there, though, to answer his inquiry after her story, so most of it had to be true.
"That's...a sad story." He frowned when they reached the end, tracing his eye over the words one more time before standing back up and walking around the statue, looking up at her face again. "I wonder if she still occasionally comes on land, then. If she knew the statue was here she must have seen it, and the plaque. You can't read it from the sea below."
A realization came over him and he smiled sadly as he moved to the back of the statue again, looking out over the sea, absent-mindedly searching the water as if he might spot the sea maiden's head looking up at them from out of the water. "I guess their story would have been a sad one, either way..." He stuffed his hands in the pockets of his swimming trunks, "She called us mortals, so I guess she's immortal. He would have aged while she stayed young... and she'd be left behind alone, in the end."
