I don't know what a research seminar is supposed to be. I mean, it only takes a day to explain the basics of research that if you don't understand you should find another major...

Sounds like your school is just nickel and diming you.

Nope. Any history major has to take an ''introduction to history research and writing" class or seminar, which also deals with the writing process specifically used in historical works. It's a requirement to get the degree here, and in other states (like Texas). Every state, if I'm not mistaken.

It's not teaching the basics of research. It's assumed that everyone knows that. It's teaching historical research in specific regards to writing papers, books, and theses on historical matters for someone who plans on doing so at a professional level. I haven't gone to the class yet, but that's the basic gist of what was explained to me by some seniors on their way out.

That aside, I'm assuming it's just another specialty class like how you have to take a ******** ton of labs as a science major, or a lot of writing courses as an aspiring writer/English major. Just something you have to learn at a more in-depth level for your profession than the average person.

Though, believe me, if I could avoid taking this ********, I would. I don't see why I need it, but apparently it addresses some issues about historical research that people don't understand or utilize. So I'm expecting to learn something about.. learning. Or researching. Wtfever. And it's required for the degree, so I'm stuck with it even if I know how to research s**t.

Bloody hell....
1) How did I lose?
2) Why do I always have to fight the confusing ones?
We lost because the judges saw something we did not notice or consider while writing our posts. We lose because we are not perfect beings and there is no perfect judging system for fights that never happened. We lost because of how our particular judges interpreted our matches and how we used our abilities.

The questions you should be asking yourself are.

1. How do I improve my character
2. How do I improve my writing style
3. What are judges looking for in a match and how can I appeal to those needs.

I know why I lost my match. Under the circumstances given to me my opponent did a better job of fighting and describing said fight. But rather than be bitter I am telling my opponent good match and I wish you luck. Time to prepare for the next.
I'm not being bitter about my loss and quite frankly I'm asking the questions your saying I should ask. Just not in the form in which you have said it. I'm asking how did I lose in terms of on what basis did I lose? What were the conditions that showed my opponent better than I? I summed it up in short by asking "how did I lose?

You'll find out when you get your notes. [Unless you already did and I didn't. ;-;]

Niether one of you have really given me a reason to listen to one or the other. I just choose to explain where I was coming from in my questioning so that It may be clear that I am not bitter as Saphen implied to my loss. I'm actually quite happy with my performance in this tournament since it branches totally away from what I'm used to. This tournament I have been taking things to a close range battle leaving it mostly to hand to hand combat, an area I am notably weak in and doing much better than expected. For this next round I'm probably going to have to reveal a few more secrets to my character Vash.

Wait... Who is Snow fighting next round? His name isn't on the roster. confused

Good question, he wasn't on the roster or in the fight line up.

I'm pretty sure he's only lost once, so I'm unsure why he isn't mentioned at all.

Yeah, I don't see any undergrad course specifically on researching and writing history for my school. There's graduate courses for thesis and s**t and that's about it.

But yeah, historical research and all of that is generally taught more in-depth in the 300 level courses here, like intro to social studies.

I was not trying to imply that you were bitter but saying that I was not being bitter to make a point.

My point was it isn't worth thinking over in any form other than self improvement. I apologize if it was interpreted otherwise.

I think this is a downgrade of the graduate course used to help prepare the students for when they get to that level. I know it's present in some other schools; one of my professors went to college in Texas and he had to take a similar class as an undergrad, and then again later on.

So it might just be a requirement in certain colleges, but it's basically an in-depth study of the requirements to do professional historical research. There's this intro, then there's a senior seminar you have to take too. So they're placing a lot of emphasis on one's ability to research and use critical thinking and the whole writing process. Which isn't surprising, because that's all you do as a historian. You research, you think, and you write. Sometimes you teach.

Understood. I entered this tournament to improve myself as well. Ive entered under a new name, new character build, new skills, the works in order to tap into a new kind of roleplaying style that I have always been skeptical of trying.

I have been trying to make this character a well oiled machine since his creation. The problems I have are that I tend to be too creative or he tends to be rather weak vs straight on physical combat. I think he is beginning to find a decent balance in this tournament but I ran into another problem in my last match. Most likely being the question of how quick he can be in melee mode.

I have always been primarily a long range fighter. Most if not all of my characters have had amazing long range capabilities and praised for them, but the shittiest close combat skills. I decided to flip the script. This character of mine here does a mixture of both. How I will not say since I have yet to have to reveal it yet but so far I have done well with just using hand to hand combat which has always been a weak area for me. Round four I'm going to have to pull all the stops and use everything this guys got.
