"So people at your work are?" Luca asked with interest. "Oooh. We could send him flowers and say they're from the selkie. I haven't seen her the last few days, though." He looked to Lori. "Maybe you could convince her to do something so nice he won't be able to refuse."
"Sounds pretty funny, actually," Luca smirked. "If anything bad happened while you were cursed you'd assume it was the curse. I bet he gets a kick out of it."

"It's way more complicated than that," Lori said with a bit of a sigh, "He's been through some bad news and...well. They're doing a temporary relocation of the selkie, of Maia, in the hope that 'distance makes the heart grow fonder' and all that. I mean, it's clear he likes her, he's just a stubborn a**. I don't know if you've met Dari, but he's the one 'in charge' of all of that. He's playing double-agent."
"Oh, yeah. He loves it. He thinks he's hilarious."

Hm. A stubborn a** who had gone through some rough stuff. Poor guy. "If he likes her, wouldn't love make whatever happened better?" he asked. "I mean, I don't know what happened, but from experience, good things make bad things seem less awful."
"He is," Luca agreed with the cat sidhe. Pranking people with fake curses was ingenious.

"Yeah, well, that's the thing. Plus there's the whole concept of selkie love being 'fake love' and just... hopefully it works, that's all." He wanted to see the b*****d as happy as anyone else, and Maia deserved what she wanted. They were cute together anyway.
Lori laughed and shook his head then. "Tell him that. He'll be your new best friend. He speaks English and Gaelic, but he can only spell in English."

Fake love? Huh. "So... Selkies make people fall in love with them?" he guessed. "No wonder he's against it."
"I'll tell him," he said. "We can prank that ghost of yours. I've never met one."

"Well, the men have seductive powers, but the females will fall in love with a lonely person just because they're lonely and fall out once they're not any more." It was unfortunate biology.
"Oh, God. Don't try to prank Michael. He has a bit of a crazy streak and he can make your life Hell. The screaming's the worst. Especially when it's coming from nowhere."

"And he thinks that's what's going on now," Luca nodded in understanding. "They're all like that then?" Poor things. Both parties had to be miserable.
Luca made a face. "Yeah, maybe not. I don't like loud noise." Screaming from nowhere didn't sound fun.

"I think so, yeah," Lori said. "All selkies can have that, but honestly I don't think Toby's been lonely in a good while. They were more or less acting like a couple. He lost his fiance, though. I'd guess he's a little scared to lose her too."
He smiled then. "He's a good guy. Really. Just don't screw with him and you're fine. He sometimes appears randomly, that can be freaky, but if you treat him like anyone else he ends up liking you. Treat him like a scary-scary ghost and he'll enjoy being scary-scary. I mean, he visits and we talk pretty frequently. He's actually an ambassador for the Bureau."

"So there's a good chance they're really in love," Luca smiled. "I hope he realizes. Or they at least find happiness." He looked up as a bird flew over them. "I've always loved birds," He said. "Except crows, I can't stand them." He wrinkled his nose. "This one in my yard, it starts cawing at four am every morning."
"I'll treat him like a regular guy. Its always nice to feel like you're normal." Or at least, part of a group of freaks.

"Definitely," Lori agreed with a nod. He watched the bird fly over and smiled. "Aww, poor crows. I mean, poor you too."
"We're all well aware we're not normal. It's just a matter of nobody caring about the differences."

"Crows are awful," Luca complained, but he smiled at Lori. "Its a beautiful day just to walk through the park."
"Yeah, that doesn't happen often around here," Luca shook his head. Humans didn't seem too accepting, in his experience. "I keep these hidden," he gestured to his ears. "Otherwise kids ask questions. I don't know if adults don't notice or if they're too busy starring at their cell phones."

"Adults would much rather believe you've got some weird genetic anomaly than the fact that you're not human. I went to a bar with Toby once and he straight up walked over to the bartender and told him what he was. He made his point. I don't worry any more. Besides," he said, reaching up to flick the tip of a daintily pointed ear. "I don't quite have them like you do. Kids, though. Kids love it."

"The bar tender probably thought your friend was drunk," the elf observed. If you wanted to admit what you were, a bar was the place to do it.
"Kids are nice. And it's easy for Halloween costumes. Though my hair kind of throws them off." He made a face. "Elves are supposed to be blonde and feminine, apparently." He shrugged, swaying their hands.

"Oh, sure. That's what I said, but he did it in a cafe to a random woman too. Same thing." He smiled then and nodded. "Yeah, I get that a lot. Plus my subspecies can also be called "faerie" and, while oddly appropriate, I try to not let that one out much. The Legolas jokes are enough for me."

"Maybe they're used to cosplayers?" Luca suggested.
They walked around the park chatting for a while before Luca suggested dinner. "The Japanese restuarant, right?" he confirmed.
They talked, laughed and ate. Luca ended up eating a pepper, his face going bright red. He topped off some of his drink and then a glass of water.
By the end of dinner, Lori asked for a second date and Luca happily agreed. "I'm paying next time!" was his only condition.
