When the woman crumpled in response to the question, Richard couldn't help but grin and chuckle a bit at her misfortune. Oh was this woman in for a bit of a wild ride. She came out of her duplex and knelt at Mercedes' side. A massive hand paw reached out and patted the hispanic woman's cheek as Richard found herself admiring the crumpled figure.
"Shame really, at least I was old and ugly to begin with," she smirked at her own joke.

Even to the pat, the woman did not stir for the moment. She had passed out, arms splayed behind her and her head lolling limply beneath her thick brown hair. She was a stringy woman, and likely fragile by the looks of her thin arms. And perhaps she was pretty, even with makeup smeared so thickly over her face. One could wonder what all of it was for, since she probably didn't need it- and certainly not in that quantity. It was all a wasted effort. Soon enough, those little bruises of hers were going to be the least of Mrs. Rodriguez's problems. Lips parted slightly, she breathed deeply, signaling that she was indeed out cold, but relatively unharmed from the fall.

When the woman failed to respond Richard grew slightly more concerne. Had she just been buzzed? No matter.
Then Richard noticed that her handpaw felt... greasy, she flipped it over to examine and sniff it. Makeup, very heavy cake like makeup. Curious, Richard peered at Mercedes' face, what was she covering up? Experimentally, Richard scraped some off of Mercedes' cheek with a claw. Was that a bruise?
She stared at it for a moment, then shrugged. She wondered who or what had damaged the woman but Merecedes was in no condition to satisfy her curiosity. No point leaving her on the porch of the duplex, Richard scooped up the small woman with ease and carried her inside, shutting the door behind her with a snap of a tentacle.
She set the unconscious woman on the bed and then started to dig through the mini fridge looking for a water bottle or something.

The pat might have done nothing for her, but the air conditioning did. When she was set down again, Mercedes began to rouse herself, rolling over to nuzzle into the sheets. Then she realized where she had been the last time she'd been conscious. "Manuel?" She called softly into the darkness, and squinted. To no avail, of course.
Long fingers felt the sheets gingerly. At least she was inside somewhere, where she could be less vulnerable to the elements. "...Ay mi... ¿Qué sucedió? ¿Dónde estoy? Hello?"

Richard had found a water bottle deep in the back of the fridge. Her tentacles waved from her back looking like two black snakes attached to his back. When Mercedes stirred and called she stood and turned around. Richard pondered the woman for moment, uncertian as to how to prevent a second fainting episode.
Not really seeing anyway around it, she advanced on Mercades with the water in front of her. Richard knew very little spanish but recalled donde was where. "Your in my duplex, you fainted." She informed Mercedes with a bit of an amused note to her voice. "Would you care for some water?"

It was dark. Right now, the best she could make out of Richard was a silhouette of her head, shoulders, and tentacles. And that water. When it was mentioned, Mercedes swallowed and noticed more than ever how dry her throat was.
"...Sí." Reaching out, she touched Richard's paw, shuddering a little before sliding her fingertips over to find the water. This she took gently and drew to her chest, opening and sipping the liquid. Long legs curled in as she propped herself up with a hand, her voice sounding very small as she implored, "Are you... a monster?"

"Am I monster? What sort of question is that?" She chided Mercedes a brief glint of her white teeth flashed in the dark. "I'm a person, just like everyone else in the village." Being called a monster irratated her although she understood why the frightened woman had said it. That didn't mean that she would tolerate it. "I'm not strictly human I suppose, but nobody stays human very long here. You got an injection right?"
Richard assumed Mercedes could see her clearly, she had not realized how much her own eyes had changed.

"I'm sorry, I just... earlier there was..." She was willing to explain her run-across with Victor, but as the other continued, Mercedes paused. "Yes, we got a shot for some 'disease' they say is running through here. What does it have to do with... what you are? A monster almost ate me today! I barely got away from it. It could talk, but it was... was... feo. You saying the fever really turns you into something like that? Are all of the assistants here... like this?" But it didn't really matter, did it? A hand waved briefly, fluttering. "I not staying so long. I'll be gone in a few days..."

Richard giggled. "Thats what they usually say. I'm afraid that shot you got wasn't medicine it was the disease." Richard opened her desk and started rummaging around in her desk. "Let me see I have a paper that explains most of it. Ah yes here it is." Richard presented Mercedes with a piece of paper with type on it but it was far to dim to read in the duplex. "I'm afriad that you'll probably be here a long time." Richard's eyes watched the beaten woman without blinking.

For a moment there was silence from Mercedes. The other woman was giggling while she brought up the news of such a misfortune. "No... You don't understand. I have business here. It is just a business trip." If there was anything that rubbed off on her from Manuel, it was his mistrust. Granted, she wasn't as smart as her husband was, but she wasn't dumb enough to just agree with what just anyone said. She did take the paper, though, squinting at it.
"My husband is a powerful man. We will be gone just as soon as he gets his business done with that leading redheaded chico." Though her voice trembled a little. To become a monster like this one! That was a horrible thought... "Loco. Es loco. Ha ha... Maybe I still sleeping, eh?" Fingers twitched over the paper, nervously folding it up.

"They don't let anyone leave. Ever. If you live in a duplex you change. That's what happens." Mercedes' fear excited Richard, this nameless woman was quickly slipping into the prey category in Richard's mind. Which meant she could be exploited without guilt but also for amusement. Denial was something she had enjoyed smashing when she had been human.
She opened her laptop and futz with it for a moment, then spun it around to show it to Mercedes. It was a picture of an old man. She always avoided look at her past appearence but for this frightened woman she made an exception. "That was me, six months ago." Her face partially illuminated by the screen.

Ever. Never ever? Mercedes twitched, drawing into herself as she watched Richard do his work on the computer. It took some restraint by her not to crush the paper in her grasp when she looked at the picture. Those dark eyes flickered rapidly back and forth, comparing. Indeed, the face was virtually the same save for the feline features. "No... is not true. Not for us." She whispered, but choked on something of a sob. The paper was stuffed silently down the front of her dress, her head shaking rapidly. "No no no no..."
Suddenly her legs were unfolding. She was on the move, fully planning to leave behind this woman who told and showed her things she refused to believe. Things she knew Manuel wouldn't believe either. No doubt, though. They were to be leaving as fast as possible, no matter how much she had to nag and whine. She'd do just about anything to save herself. Hell, earlier she had been throwing her food at Victor like a madwoman when she believed him to be hostile, and now she was starving. "I'm leaving now. I don't want to know. I don't want to see what you've gone through! Ay....ay.." She stumbled in the dark, never taking her eyes away from Richard as she groped around for the door.

"Everyone says that, everyone thinks their special." Richard slammed the laptop closed and openly sneered at her guest. "That somehow they're different," Dee had thought that, Seth had thought that and who knows how many other people were too weak to see the truth in front of there faces. And now this woman was just dismissing everything she had gone through, because she feared the truth. Richard's lips pulled away from her teeth as she shifted her stance lower, a dangerous growl rumbled from her. The tentacles which had been passive before, coiled like snakes about to strike.
"Where do you think your going? There is no where to run. You'll be changing yourself before too long." The words had a deep rumble to them, an inhuman edge, Her posture embodied that of an angry predator.

Even as the other woman went on, Mercedes kept shaking her hand, blindly fumbling for the door. This animal had showed her a few pictures and now seemed to fully expected her to believe that she was to spend the rest of her life on this island. As a mutation, no less! It wasn't as if the Spaniard had ever in her life sat in the lap of luxury, or had a very great life to return to. But this? No. This was absurd. If Richard thought she was just going to sit and nod and so willingly accept such a change, she was wrong. Even more if she thought that Mercedes was going to even accept the foul appearance of these... things! They were animals, for the love of God! Of course she didn't want to think she was going to have to become one of them.
The woman was a good lie detector. She was even better at lying to herself. Deep within her, she knew the catwoman wasn't lying. It horrified her. But so long as she wasn't changing yet, so long as there was one shred of reasoning that she could use to blanket herself in ignorance...
"I'll be leaving," She said weakly, her search for the door becoming more frantic as the growls came. Oooh, she didn't want to die! "I'm not going to become one of you... you freaks.. ¡Salga! Stay away from me, you animal!" She was nearly on the brink of tears now, and very very afraid for her well-being.

Richard only growled louder, when Mercy continued to insult her, the growl revving up and down like a dragster's engine. She squatted down low, one hand paw breifly touched the carpeted floor. Then she sprung, slamming the scrambling woman against the wall with her bulk, her massive handpaws seeking and closed around Mercy forarms. The claws stayed sheathed, Richard not seeking to injure Mercedes but she wasn't about to tolerate being insulted in her home for any reason, least at all someone too stupid to realize the reality of the situation. Richard pinned Mercades to the wall, face first and brought her muzzle within an inch of the back the woman's neck.
"I'm not going to stand for that!" She growled to her captive.
