Ray wrinkles her nose. "Well, if they want to stop losing fields to Thread burrows, they should send out more ground crews; even flying under ideal conditions with a fully populated Weyr, there's always the stray Thread that slips through. As for the weather? They have irrigation ditches, the rivers haven't run dry yet, and most Holds have more than enough people to haul water."

She pauses, a troubled expression crossing her face, "It doesn't help that for some reason, the Queens just aren't producing the clutches they should be; a dozen eggs from Wrath, shards, Fort's senior Queen laid eight in her most recent clutch. Eight!" she repeats herself, shaking her head. "A clutch of eight during a Pass is unheard of! If both happened at the same Weyr, I'd fear water contamination!"

Stopping herself from continuing her tirade, Ray turns her mind to possible solutions beyond complaining about the Holders.

"There are plenty of wild herds in Keroon; the tame ones always have at least dogs with them, usually people. Also, there are flocks of wild wherries along the coast toward Nerat. The older weyrlings, I'll be training them to recognize the Red Butte in the next few days, they can hunt their dragons around there once I'm sure they've memorized the location. The younger weyrlings and dragons of injured riders shouldn't deplete the Weyr's herds too much, and we can send riders out to capture live animals for the Weyr herds."

She sighs. "The green and blue riders could probably ferry the women from the Lower Cavern to places with wild fruit and melons, heck, the Weyrlings can do it once they've mastered between, and that shouldn't be much longer. Shells but it stings the pride that we have to resort to these measures to keep food on the table."

Beriadi nods, "That it does."
"the small clutches are worrysome...Wrath's hatchlings were healthy though."

Oneth gave a sqwak as it was his turn to be oiled by T'thia in the lower caverns. Lira and Hutu were sunning near Arizath on his favorite ledge. Oneth disapeared and reapeared in the lower caverns settling onto T'thia's lap for his oiling. T'thia gave a small laugh as her bronze flit sent her images of A'nash

"so that' where you got to"

she handed her flit a meat roll to keep him busy while she oiled his hide

Myythren

Myyth wrinkled her nose at the meat she was feeding Spirith, it seemed a bit old. "How's the meat?" she aked the little green. "Good. I want more." Myyth shrugged and went to fetch the food for her glutten of a dragon.

About half way back a thought hit her, "Why I am I still feeding her by hand? She's as old and as smart as the rest of the hatchlings......"

About ten minutes later Myyth was sitting near the lake cleaning pieces of meat off both herself and Spirith. "Did you learn anything from that?" Myyth asked, only somewhat sarcasticly. Her dragon smiled and gave her a smug glance before amwsering, "Other than throwing chunks of meat at your face is agood way to get a quick bath?' Myyth rolled her eyes as she bathed the Spirith. "You know what I ment. I was thinking more of that throwing meat at me, missing, and nearly hitting one of the cooks, before throwing a second piece and hitting me was a bad idea." "You're the one who started it." the dragon said, just a hint of wine entering her voice. Myyth shook her head and replyed "I asked you to do something simple. In a while your going to have to catch you own food."

Spirith pondered this for a few minutes. "If I feed my self can I go back to sleeping on your bed?" Myyth shook her head. "Your far too big to sleep on my bed, even if you are half the size of the other greens." Spirith snorted and looked about, searching her mind for another bargening chip. Fine, I want a swim every morning."

Myyth looked at the draong a somewhat incredulus expresion on her face. "Let me get this strait, You feed Yourself and because you do me this great service I get up early and we go to the lake every morning?". "That would be the plan." The dragon said, nodding. Myyth shrugged, what could she do? "Fine, its a deal, weather permitting." I thought you would say that." Spirith replyed. "I think I'm clean now."

"I think so too." Myyth gathered up the brushes and stared to walk back to the weyr. "Come on" she called back to her dragon, "you can dry as we walk." Myyth laughed out loud a moment later, as at the back of her mind was touched by the dark mumbles of a wet dragonette.

Ray nods to herself, smiling as though the dragonets were her own children. "Even Spirith--the one that got broken out of one of the tiny eggs-she's growing so quickly. I doubt she'll catch up to her siblings in size, but she's really robust."

She glances at the recordhides. "So are you goint to draw up a duty roster? The older group of Weyrlings will be cleared for making jaunts on their own soon--with permission and confirmation of location from the on-duty Watchdragon, of course. They could handle some of the ferrying with minimal supervision, I'm sure. Should we get in touch with the other Weyrs to see what measure they are planning to help resolve the discord between Hold and Weyr?

Kyamakin

PostPosted: Tue Dec 07, 2004 11:18 pm

"Yes, I'm feeding you as fast as I can, you ... you ... impossible thing you!" Nimakio, even with his mouth full, managed a respectable hiss at his person. The blue flit had grown a lot since hatching, and with occasional abject lessons in "getting beaten up for misbehavior" from Isskio, had developed a thin layer of manners. Except when he was hungry, then all of the training he had painstakingly beaten into the little blue's hide vanished.

Finally sated, Nimakio dropped off into a deep slumber. This was the only time K'makin trusted the little terror near his face, so he draped the blue flit around his shoulders and got up to claim dinner for himself. It looked like some Riders had been out on Search again; there were very unfamiliar faces here and there.

He found it somewhat disconcerting though; so many new faces, and so many of them girls. Didn't riders only Search girls when there was a Queen Egg on the sands? There hadn't even been a recent flight!

Perhaps some riders had sought holder girls as weyrmates? With the famine, many girls were more than willing to leave their homes for the envisioned culinary security that could be found at a Weyr.

Though, now that he thought about it, as he scooped a bowl of rather thin stew from one of the warm pots, and a mug of klah from another, the food hadn't really been all that great lately. The herds looked a bit on the skimpy side too. Shrugging, he sits down and begins to eat; if the supply problem had gotten to the point where he noticed it, then surely others were aware of it by now.

As Oneth disappeared, A'nash stood up to get some food, he hadn't eaten all day and he was getting hungry. When he reached the kitchens, there was a lot of late afternoon activity. He grabbed himself a cup of klah and sat down at one the tables, sipping at his klah he looked about the kitchen to see if there was anyone he knew.

Grinning widely, Niko gave Gyo's hide one last sweep with the coarse brush before tossing it into her towel on the shore. "There, I think that should about do it, wouldn't you say, Gyo?" She laughed, and patted the dragon's glistening neck.

Turning his head to look at her, he blinked his large eyes at her, his eyes a swirling green. Not enough!! I think I still have an itch on my side.... He trailed off, lifting his leg to try and scratch his side with a clawed toe.

Niko laughs merrily, and scratched one of Gyo's eye ridges. "That's enough for now and for today! One bath a day is enough for me, and all I can do right now." She smiled again at Gyomanth. "Come on now, I'm so hungry I could eat a buck!"

"Okay. If you want Isskio to send it, she knows Tolara and is pretty reliable about messages, just let me know." Isskio chirps and rubs her head against Ray's jaw.

T'thia looked up as A'nash entered the lower caverns and sat sipping a mug of klah. she smiled softley at the old memories. before she would have glanced away and made herself busy with oiling Oneth but she had more courage and thought of the bronze rider as a friend, and thought they shared a hiden bond, both being bronze riders and all. so with courage she had grown to hold from her turn and a half at the wyre she raised her hand high and waived at him. there were empty seats at her table if he wished to join but didn't have to if he wished to remain on his own. her wave was in greeting and partial invitation. Oneth looked up from his meat roll and squaked in annoyance as his oiling was interupted. T'thia gave a chuckle and sighed

"alright you testy thing"

she lowered her hand and went back to oiling her flit.

A'nash was finishing the last bit of his klah, when he saw T'thia wave at him. He saw some empty seats at her table, so he stood and walked over to the table she was sitting at.
"So thats why the little rascal dissapeared, it was his turn to be oiled" He said as he sat down beside T'thia.

T'thia gave a small laugh and smiled brightly at A'nash. she had grown quite a bit since she last spoke with the bronze rider her smile changing from the nervouse uncertainty the young rider used to flash every once and a while to a genuinly happy and strong smile

"he didn't give you too much trouble did he?"

she gave A'nash a small apologetic grin if Oneth ahd done anything to disturb the man. Huntu was the prankster of her trio but Oneth was known to cause a little mayhem, especially around this time, Lira was due to rise and since Oneth was the only bronze flit in their sea hold he had always flown her but with more bronzes around this next flight would be a true fight for him and it caused the small creature to be a little more energetic and destructive then usual

"No he didnt give much trouble, although I almost fell because he started sending all kind of images of you in my mind, but the images were quite funny I must say" He could barely hold in a grin when he said this.

"So tell me T'thia how have you been, I haven't seen you in a long time. And you seem to have changed a great deal, since we first met"
He sat back in his chair smiling awaiting the answer. He already knew a lot because of all the images Oneth had send him, but he wanted to hear it from T'thia.

T'thia gave a nod

"i have changed."

her gaze dropped to Oneth who sat contentedley in her lap

"you know it's funny, when i first came here i was so scared, i didn't want to talk to anybody. now look at me! i'm leading hatchlings of the sands and aiding in wyreling lessons!"

T'thia gave a small laugh and returned her gaze to A'nash

"many things have happened since you left A'nash, Fort's wyreleader...." she couldn't bring herself to finish the sentance "two hatchings have gone by. and Arizath has well outgrown the wyreling barracks, not to mention me. we fell behind in lessons and now i fear we're getting so many new wyrelings i'll soon be sleeping outside with Arizath!"

she gave a small chuckle at the joke

"so tell me, what's going on with you? where have you been all this time?"

A'nash smiled at T'thia, "I've noticed you have changed and for the better I must say" He gave a little wink at her.
A'nash face turned grave, "yes I know about Fort's weyrleader, I came back once in a while in the period I was away, just to know what was going on at the weyr's. But I kept a low profile, so nobody noticed me.

He got a grin on his face when T'thia mentioned that Arizath had grown so big, "Haven't you got a weyr of your own yet?"

He shrugged at her last question, "I've been fine, I had to go away from the weyr because Damia disappeared. Had to clear my mind. I had plenty of time to do that, I went on a journey across Pern." He smiled "I've seen a lot of beautiful things, but the sight of the weyr when I returned, outdid everything." Faramith gave an agreeing rumble from the ledge he was perched on.
